Re: [IRCA] OT Locksmith duties

2008-03-16 Thread John Hunter
Hi Patrick, I'm sorry to hear about your neighbors passing..I too
don't handle those type of situations very well either. There have
been 6 deaths including my father in the last 3 years and they were
all close neighbors. I hope you feel better soon.

As many of you know, I am a lockmith on the Oregon Coast. I have been
one for nearly 30 years. I took the business over from my father. Well,
tonight I got a knock on my door, just as I was typing the KRRZ tip a
bit ago. I answered it and it was my neighbor's son. He could not get an
answer from knocking on his mothers front door. So, I called Lucile and
no answer either. I grabbed my tools and headed over. I knocked, rang
the doorbell, still nothing except I could hear her little dog barking.
The screen door was locked from the inside. I got that open and picked
her lock. Her son walked in and as I expected, he found his mother and
she had passed. Lucille was a nice lady and she was nearly 92, but had
been in good shape and was still diving her car. I knew her since we
moved in 1981. So I am a bit upset tonight. Fortunately, I did not view
the body as she had made it to her bedroom, but ended up on the floor
out of sight. I don't handle things like this very well after losing
both of my parents and partner. However, I guess it is a locksmith's

had to tell someone.

[IRCA] White-space converter fizzles, again

2008-02-13 Thread John Hunter
Technology companies eager to grab vacant airwaves

WASHINGTON - Technology companies eager to grab
vacant airwaves and use them for high-speed
Internet service first have to develop a gizmo
that makes the conversion possible.

They just can't seem to get it right.

Last week, a prototype device broke down again
the second time in seven months in the hands of
the Federal Communications Commission. Regulators
there must be convinced that the airwaves can be
used for broadband service in a way that doesn't
interfere with other TV programming and wireless microphone signals.

An FCC spokesman declined to comment on the matter.

Ian Ferrell, director of wireless incubation for
Microsoft Corp., one of companies developing the
prototype, said the device lost power after continual testing.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

Technical glitches aren't the only power issues
facing the high-tech coalition, whose members
also include Google Inc., Dell Inc.,
Hewlett-Packard Co., Intel Corp., EarthLink Inc.
and Philips Electronics North America Corp., a
division of Netherlands-based Royal Philips
Electronics NV. The coalition is in a public
relations squabble with TV broadcasters, who fear
such technology will interfere with their programming.

The fight over so-called white spaces is
heating up in anticipation of the February 2009
switch from analog to digital signals.

Broadcasters quickly channeled the device's break
down as evidence of interference risks. The
prototype's failure was reported by a trade
publication late Friday night. In a press release
Monday, the National Association of Broadcasters,
the main lobbying group for local TV and radio
stations, said the devices are not ready for prime time.

This admission by 'white space' proponents
vindicates beyond doubt the interference concerns
expressed by broadcasters, sports leagues,
wireless microphone companies and theater
operators, NAB spokesman Dennis Wharton said.
Completing a successful transition to digital
television ought not to be jeopardized by
introducing risky technology that has proven to be unworkable.

The FCC in late July said the coalition's first
device did not reliably detect unoccupied
spectrum and could interfere with other TV
programming and wireless microphone signals.

In that case, Microsoft said the device was
simply broken and failed to work. This time
around the company said the device lost power
after continual testing and insists it's not a setback.

The power issue is unrelated to the technology
points we're trying to prove, said Ferrell.

The FCC contacted the coalition Wednesday after
the device lost power, but Ferrell said once the
device cooled down it started to work again
properly. In the meantime, the FCC began testing
on a second identical device submitted by Microsoft.

Edmond Thomas, who represents the technology
coalition, said there is no correlation between a
test device and a final commercial product, which would address power issues.

He said NAB's comments were absurd and extreme.

The coalition contends transmitting high-speed
Internet service over unused TV airwaves, also
known as white spaces, could make it more
accessible and affordable, especially in rural areas.

Any such device wouldn't be available until the
country's switch to digital TV a year from now.

The FCC last month said it will conduct a second
round of tests in laboratory and real-world
conditions, which could take up to three months.
It plans to issue a report six weeks after the testing ends.

The agency is also testing other white-space
devices submitted by Motorola Inc. and Adaptrum,
a Mountain View, Calif.-based startup.

Re: [IRCA] This week in Buffalo tropo a bashing for Christian translators

2007-11-06 Thread John Hunter
Hi John, I totally agree with you. Here in Chattanooga we have 3
stations simulcasting the same format. 99.3, 97.3, and AM 980 WUUS
Oldies 98. They are all equally strong here and IMHO it's a total
waste of channel space. I'm not even sure who the translators are and
who they are translating!
Then when I find a rare open channel with a super weak signal and I
sit on it for an hour waiting for an ID it usually ends up being a
translator for some church organization and they give out about 10
other sets of call letters but never mention the frequencies. VERY
frustrating. That's why I have pretty much given up on FM DXing.
BTW, I spent many summers in DE up there in a little town called
Milford at my grand parents and am very familiar with that state. My
father used to be head of the accounting dept and then later on was
the plant controller at the Hercules/Atlas /ICI powder company I
think in Wilmington and also at the Senter MI plant.
Sorry for the ramblings, I just noticed that you're from DE.

There is just a whole lot of idiocy involved with this translator
shell game anyway that really needs to be addressed. For example,
the aforementioned REACH-FM has what amounts to two translators that
serve Dover, Delaware (on 98.7 and 106.9). Why on earth do you need
two translators to serve the whole town? The 106.9 signal works just
fine.

That 98.7 signal? If you look it up in the FCC database, you find it
licensed to Smyrna, DE. But the transmitter is actually in Woodside,
Delaware, a full 20 miles away, on the southside of Dover. You can
barely hear 98.7 in Smyrna. That one really makes me roll my eyes.

I think a lot of these translator coverage areas do overlap anyway. I
can hear no fewer than 4 REACH-FM signals here in Smyrna without even
trying hard.

Of course, the secular stations are just as guilty of this translator
farming, as seen in all the licenses I see locally for Temple
University in this area. Their 90.1 main signal does just fine and
they really don't need half of the translators that they think they
do.

Hi Patrick, They are pretty noisy and put out birdies and noise on
the MW band so I turn them off while DXing. Even a top brand like APC

John, I owned a MW550P and had mixed results. Initially the preamp was

with strong MW stations nearby; on DXpeditions to the coast it was nice and
quiet. I had to send it back to Palstar. The reworked unit performed pretty
well and the noise was greatly reduced, but I was always disappointed with
the preselection below 580 kHz or so. The peaking or preselection was
minimal to zero from 580 downwards, which was a shame because that's where I
needed it the most due to certain local powerhouses.

I'd recommend getting one if you can be sure of returning it if it doesn't
work out. Also, be sure to assess your receiver, antenna, and local RF
environment to judge whether or not you really need a preselector. It may
not be needed at all to help you hear more DX. You may want to check the

John,

I have the Palstar MW 550P and used it nightly until it was knock
out by a lighting strike at Grayland last April. Built like a tank
and it tunes up into the tropical band. Nice for tuning splits
frequency stations and separating them from domestic stations. I
plan on sending mine back to Palstar for repair. Pat Martin uses
one and it helps knock down the noise from the electric fence that
is near his house.

Thanks Patrick, that sounds like a pretty good endorsement. One more

John,

I have been using the MW550P for a couple years now. It works very well.
Sometimes that extra boost will bring in a station and the sellectivity
of the unit (2 KHZ) will help out cutting the QRM from a nearby sloppy
station without having to narrow the filters on the R8. The skirts are
very good on the MW550P. It is the best presellector I have ever seen
for MW.

[IRCA] Multi-section capacitors

2006-12-04 Thread John Hunter
Hi everyone, I'm restoring a couple of old Hallicrafters rigs (SW 500
and S-38B) and was wondering how you re stuff the power supply
multiple section tubular caps? Someone told me to just eliminate them
and solder caps of the proper values in place of them but I want to
do it right. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
