Re: [IRCA] Charles A Taylor?

2015-03-15 Thread KH2AR
Charles and I were quite close at one time. I met him in 1973-74 just after I
got out of the navy. He lived in Indianapolis and I was in Lafayette. We kept
up with each other over the years and I visited him for a week or so in the
early 80s when he was living and working on Okinawa and I was stationed on
Guam. The last I knew he was suffering from throat cancer and had lost the
ability to speak. He was always optimistic and a fighter. I haven't heard from
him for several years and just assumed that he'd passed. I hope I am wrong. A
very good guy and a tremendous DXer. I still have and use the R-390A he
reconditioned and sold to me for pretty much a song.

[IRCA] Off topic - wireless headphones

2015-02-07 Thread KH2AR
I apologize for this off-topic request, but I'm trying to find a good wireless
transmitter/receiver system that can support about a half dozen wireless
headphones. This is intended for folks in our church who have hearing problems.
The range would only need to be a few hundred feet and would essentially be
line of sight. We have a wireless RF microphone system so I'm thinking maybe an
infrared system for the wireless headphones would be better in order to avoid
any chances of QRM. Thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer. Please email
me directly and don't add more clutter to the list.

Right now the main problem is it won't come on when I flip the ON switch.
Instead, I get an ERROR 3 message. Also, it will not work with the AC adapter
... only internal batteries. That is usually not a problem since I prefer
batteries most of the time anyway.

I think the problem with my 2010 is much simpler. Probably just a loose solder
connection or two. If I turn it on and get the ERROR 3 message but tap the
case I can sometimes get it to come to life. I will also keep searching for a
solution but am very reluctant to pop the case myself and run the risk of
causing more damage. I will indeed keep you in the look Colin in hopes that you
will be in a better situation to take on some extra repair work.

My passion for fixing radios may be reflashed when that happens this
summer. One never knows.
Keep me in the loop.

From what you are telling me, your radio is essentially deaf now?
It is quite common for the 2010 to pop a FET in the front end but that
usually does not result in total deafness.
Scratchy audio is likely the product of anything from a dirty volume
potentiometer to some flaky or dying caps.

Keep me posted.

2012-03-08 Thread KH2AR

As Les, J.D. and others have requensted - will someone please pull all this
Chicago-off-the-air-possible-DX-Test info together in one compreh ensive email?
This is a great opportunity and it would be extremely beneficial to have
something akin to a roadmap available.

Re: [IRCA] Fwd: Re: [Amdx] 580 WHP test makes it - probably night power

2012-02-27 Thread KH2AR

A later email said he got the OK to go Non-D, so I assume that's what he did.
The indices were up so that may have been a contributing factor, or there may
have been a technical hitch and they did not go Non-D. I'm waiting to hear back
from him regarding how things went on his end. I think the fact that he tested
several times through the early morning hours  - albeit for short duration -
was the best we could hope for. Our opportunities for 30 or 60 minute tests
like in the old days will continue to be few and far between.

All the best, Jim

Hi Jim,

I thought that the test email said that he would explore the idea of
using day facilities.  I doubt that he used them, or more of us in the
Midwest would have gotten one or both.  I got none, lol.

Although I appreciate the effort, these tests just didn't last long
enough.  I do appreciate and understand that even at one-something AM,
programming still rules but hopefully next time we can get day rig and
more than 60 seconds at a time, lol.

As the last few post lists
indicate, the 1550 KRPI Ferndale Wa DX test has been put
aside in favour of new items to report so I'll just throw in
a little reminder that at 0:100  PST( Sunday AM) the DX
test will be conducted. At 1600 to 1700 PST Saturday 1550
went from a loud and clear Vancouver Wa baseball game ( no
KRPI) to a 50/50 mix of the two stations at 1630 to a now
dominating Ferndale at 1700. I don't know if Van Wa does a
pattern shift or was just covered by a stronger footprint
from Ferndale which has now assumed a more steady signal. I
will be tuning in when the test commences. Bill in BC

KRPI's actual daytime antenna pattern can be viewed on the FCC website
 ttp://transition.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/127961-23102.pdf

One of the two main lobes is at 90 degrees, so it should get out well to the
 ast.

The local geo graphy skews the groundwave quite a bit, what with saltwater to
he west and the C ascade mountains to the east, which explains the coverage

Re: [IRCA] qsls by year

2012-01-09 Thread KH2AR

Although my accomplishments are far inferior to Patrick's I can remember a few
years in the 1970s and 80s when it would not be uncommon to receive a dozen
QSLs every two weeks or less during the winter DX season. Oh for those halcyon
days when the QSLs returns far outnumbered the holdouts and the non-QSLers were
the exception rather than the rule (cue audible sigh).

I did not keep track of the number of MW QSLs I received each year
before about 1990. But since then, 2000 was my best year with 134 QSLs.
To compare, I got only 6 QSLs in 2010, 11 in 2009. I haven't been at the
dials as much, and also logging new stations since I have DXed here on
the coast since the 60s, is not as easy feat now. With 3020 MW QSLs,  92
countries since 1965, I am not complaining. The highlights of this past
year were the WKVQ GA test QSL, WGBW WI test QSL, and KCJB ND QSL.

QSLs are tougher to come by these days, so it's always nice to get
something out of the ordinary, and that's happened twice in the past
month or so:

KTMS 990 Santa Barbara sent me a QSL letter, and then the v/s also sent
along a big envelope containing area newspapers, to tell me a bit about
the area.

KRNV Lexington, NE.   Sent a nice verie sheet, stickers, and a 200+ page
book for KRVN's 50th anniversary back in 2001.   Very interesting book,
and also covers the other stations of Nebraska Rural Radio
Associtation.   In this case my report was for KRVN-FM,  but I have no
doubt they're just as friendly towards MW reports

Re: [IRCA] DXers under the age of 30

2011-04-06 Thread KH2AR

Sadly, AM radio is one of the worst places to try and get current local
information in the Memphis area. Most of the stations have no local news
department, and those who do pretty much work 9 to 5 and go home. After that
it's either what they recorded during the day or what the sat feed gives them.
Radios like the CC Crane models that could pick up TV audio used to be good for
severe weather and the like, but thanks to the digital sift (Progress? Yeah,
right. Don't get me started on that), that option has also been eliminated.

I handed her a square black box (DX-375) and said'remember

I had a young man ask me what I was reading on my

But, I'm old enough to remember listening to

50 years from now, I wonder if radio stations will
 even be around.
Today's youth, as has already been mentioned on this
 list, are getting
their music from iPods, and if none of them even know
 about AM radio
these days, I can imagine there'll come a point in
 time where FM will
become passe in their minds, too.  And a generation
 that grew up on
 radio will be long gone.

I hate to say it and I hope I am wrong, but we may be
 the last
generation of MW DXers. Several DXer friends I know
 feel the same way. I
am now 62 and have been at the dials since I was 13.
 But the future of
AM radio in this country could be on its' way out.
 Now there will be a
lot of stations on the air for years to come. I don't
 think WBZ, WABC,
KGO, KFI, etc are going anywhere for a long time. But
 we are seeing a
lot more streaming on the internet. I know the talk
 shows on KGO get a
lot of callers that listen online and even more the e
 mail the station.
Add Ipods to mix and the need for the power monster
 50KW transmitters,
the days may be numbered. Especially if electric
 rates continue to
climb. That is one main reason KAIM 870 in Hawaii
 shut down was the high
electric rates on Molakai to run 50 KW. With the
 downturn in the
economy, even big TV stations are having trouble.
 Personally, I don't
see the need for zillions of stations running the
 same talk shows. I
many went off,Better  DXing would return too.

It's not an ultralite, but the Sony ICF-7600GR not only has excellent SSB
capability, but also a good synchronous detector.  The Grundig G4000A (a newer
version of the YB-400?) tunes SSB.

It seems to me that there has been a lot of new small, feature rich radios come
out in the last year or so, and I feel like I have lost touch with the big
picture.  I have a need for a pretty small portable wth AM, FM, and SSB.  By
small, I mean it needs to be able to fit in a brief case without taking up a
lot of it.  And at the same time offer pretty good performance.  I have an
ATS-909 that meets all of these needs except for size.  Does anyone have
suggestions for something smaller?

Re: [IRCA] My new QSL

2008-07-16 Thread KH2AR
And I'm a little disappointed that you couldn't be patient like everyone else
and decided to bug the station for a QSL Barry. I know I'm behind on processing
QSL requests for this test but I have assured you and everyone else that they
will come. I stand by that and promise that everyone who heard the test and
sent a report will get a QSL.

We all like to get QSLs - and I'm at the top of that list - but I still ask
that people not jump the gun. If Paul Andrews or others at WBIX begin to get
bombarded by requests we're likely to ruin a good relationship with the station.

Thanks folks - I'm working on the 2008-09 test season and hope to have some
tests to announce soon.

Re: [IRCA] My new QSL

2008-07-16 Thread KH2AR
No harm done Barry - I fully understand that you were anxious to recieve your
QSL. I am travelling on the east coast at the moment but will do my darnedest
to get those WBIX QSLs out when I get back. I'll also work to keep the

seat to the heat.

[IRCA] WHBC 1480 Canton, OH 3/29/08 DX Test still a go

2008-03-24 Thread KH2AR
Fellow DXers,

My apologies for taking so long to update everyone on this DX Test, but I
wasn't able to talk with WHBC Chief Engineer Dale Lamm until today, plus I have
been traveling all day and just now have made it to where I can work on
e-mails.

After a lengthy and informative conversation with Dale, he feels it is best
that we proceed with the DX Test on the 29th as scheduled, although he will be
using WHBC's standard night pattern and power. He does intend to include
special test features like Morse code and sweep tones, probably inserted during
some standard breaks. This should still significantly improve the chances of
hearing WHBC's signal at greater distances.

Thanks to Dale for conducting the test, and I know we are all grateful for him
taking the time and trouble to air the special program inserted into their
standard Fox Sports Channel fare.

Subject: [IRCA] WBIX DX Test Final Report

 WBIX DX Test Final Report

Let me think of some appropriate superlatives: spectacular, amazing,
overwhelmingly successful … nope, they still don’t capture how great this
late-February DX test from Natick, Massachusetts came out. In addition to
being heard in at least 18 U.S. states and 2 Canadian provinces, the test
was also logged in Finland, Norway, Scotland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Here’s the LONG list of DXers who have reported hearing the test:

Mark DeLorenzo – South Dennis, MA
 Dave Hochfelder – Albany, NY
Steve Howe – Saint Albans, VT
 Curtis Sadowski – Paxton, IL
 Joe Miller – Troy, MI
 Mike Brooker – Toronto, ON
 Craig Healy – Providence, RI
 George Sherman – Minnesota
 Perry Crabill – Winchester, VA
 Mark Gerwlivch – Markham, ON
 Mark Connelly - Billerica, MA
Rob Ross – London, ON (DXing on an Ultralite radio of course)
 Bruce Portzer – Seattle, WA
 Tom Jasinski – Shorewood, IL
 Bjarne Mjelde – Berlevag, Norway
 Jan Edh – Freddiksfors, Sweden
 OJ Sagdahl – Tronheim, Norway
 Andrew Blade – York, UK
 Sig Andersson – Norrköping, Sweden
 Torolf Johnsson – Stockholm, Sweden
 Dave Pyatt – Burlington, ON
 Bob Galerstein – Monroe, NY
 Dave Braun – Wyoming, DE
 Scott Fybush – Rochester, NY
Joe Wozniak – St. Louis, MO
Rich Line – Sterling Heights, MI
 David Faulkner – Albany, NY
 Torgeir Woxen – Sørumsand, Norway
 Barry Davies – Carlisle, UK
 Shawn Axelrod – Winnipeg, MB
 Neil Kazaross – Barrington, IL
 Jim Wallace – Charleston, WV
Tim Noonan – Oak Creek, WI
Steve Francis – DXing from Newport News, VA
 Dave Larrabee – Columbia, MD
 Jim Solatie – Lemmenjoki, Finland
 Eric Söderman – Norrköping, Sweden
 Håkan Sundman – Lemmenjoki, Finland
 Ken Baird – Sorn, Scotland
 Kermit Geary – Walnutport, PA
Jim Paige – Sterling Heights, MI
Steve Kennedy – Coal Township, PA
 Charles Helms – Nutley, NJ
Philip Chiello, Jr. – Elm Grove, WI
 Kraig Krist – Manassas, VA
Leslie Wood – East Meadow, NY
John Fisher – North Chelmsford, MA
Mary Karren-Landry – Poland Spring, ME
 John Malicky – Pittsburgh, PA
 Andrew Blade – Ayrshire, Scotland

It seems that the only DXers east of the Mississippi River who had a
problem hearing the test were those like me here in Memphis who live in
WBIX’s protective null. Likewise, J.D. Stephens and Les Rayburn in Alabama
reported no success in hearing this most desirable test.

A trend that appears to be developing is a greater international
interest in trying for DX tests. This is indeed exciting, and a potentially
strong selling point to station engineers and management for future tests.
Evidence supporting some unrealized potential for future successes in this
area is provided by comments from DXer Mark Connelly in Massachusetts:

“At 0016 EST / 0516 UTC on 24 FEB I had no problem hearing the WBIX-1060
Natick, MA test on the DXTuner receiver located in Ilfracombe, England,” he
wrote. “Code ID's, sweep tones, and voice announcements came through fine.
Clearly dominating the channel. (Other DXTuners) that had some signal:
Edinburgh, Scotland (poor, much weaker than at Ilfracombe, bits of voice and
tones) Italy and Germany (carrier evident but nil / nearly nil audio)
Caracas, Venezuela (bits of Morse code ID in huge “furball” jumble).”

Thanks for sharing this fascinating info Mark. Perhaps we need to try
and reach out to DXers in Latin America and encourage them to begin
listening for tests. I have not received any reports from DXers in those
regions on any tests this season.

As the prime BCB listening time begins to transition into nights with
higher QRN levels and more hours of daylight, I am still trying to nail down
just a couple more DX tests. More to follow on these as details become
 available.

Once again, our sincere thanks to WBIX Chief Engineer Grady Moates for
agreeing to conduct this test, and to BTC member Paul B. Walker Jr. for his
persistent efforts to arrange it. Now to the task of processing the many
 requests for QSLs.

Remember to keep checking the DXTESTS.INFO Web site frequently and

** U S A. Tnx to Paul B. Walker, Jr., for putting on an impromptu DX test
 from
WABV 1590 in South Carolina. Since he said it would run until 0630 UT Feb 8,
 it
was more convenient for me to start listening after 0600 than 0500. I made
 the
great sacrifice of hearing ESPN Radio with stupid sports talk for 15+
 minutes,
and trying to detect some signs of the DX test underneath, but never any sign
of it, so I wonder if WABV really ran until 0630?

At least I was rewarded by a new (?) log of a station I would otherwise
 avoid,
WAIK 1590 in Galesburg IL, which did give a full ID at 0622, along with Sunny
97.7, WMOI [COL: Monmouth], after which I upgave. Whoopee! Per NRC AM Log,
 WAIK
runs only 55 watts at night, and it was dominating the frequency! Could it be
they forgot to switch from 5000 watts day power? The least they could have
 done
for WABV test. NRC Antenna Pattern Book shows them with an almost circular
pattern to the south of city only (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING
 DIGEST)

Re: [IRCA] Beacon ZLS

2008-02-01 Thread kh2ar
I hear it here in Memphis quite regularly, and suspect it is pretty much heard
quite widely across the hemisphere. I agree - quite fun to hear, and more
entertaining than Reloj at times!

I was listening to the Cuban on 530 during a recent visit to the Palm Beach,
Florida area using a car radio in motion. I heard slow Morse behind it
 sending
Z-L-S. It is a nice strong beacon from the nearby Bahamas. Fun to hear. Is it
heard beyond the southeast? Also dominant was Radio Reloj on 570 and ZNS on
 810.
There is nothing like being near the ocean. I wish I was there during the
evening to DX SSS. This was a quick day trip! The daytime DX was great fun.
 Is
there anything else I should try to catch down there? Thanks, Karl N2KZ

Thanks very much for the speedy reply Gary. I hope my friend can get one for me

 Jim and Tim,

The post was from me. The radio is the Sony SRF-T615, (the made in
Japan, top of the line digital flagship Ultralight model from Sony). It is
not available for sale in North America, and can only be ordered from Audio
 Cubes 2 (_http://www.audiocubes2.com_ (http://www.audiocubes2.com) ) as a
specialty item. It costs $89, plus about $15 for Express Mail shipping to the
 USA.

Someone in Japan can easily purchase the radio at almost any
electronics store, at a significantly reduced price. After personally
 experiencing the
current stampede in Audio Cubes' SRF-T615 orders from the USA and Canada
(mostly as a result of my own recommendation on this list), I would strongly
recommend that a friend purchase the unit in Japan, and you may well avoid
 the
current 3-week delay in Audio Cubes 2 orders.

[IRCA] Police radio on current X-band frequencies

2008-01-15 Thread kh2ar
There was some discussion yesterday about police radio stations that once
operated on what are now BCB X-band frequencies. I have scanned a couple of
lists out of publications in my modest library of old radio publications - one
dated 1935 and the other from what appears to be about 1940. If anyone would
like copies of the PDFs, just e-mail me off list and I'll be happy to send
copies to you.

[IRCA] Police band radio on medium wave freqs

2008-01-14 Thread KH2AR
Hi Patrick - just to avoid any confusion, however, KCA999 was actually a police
dispatch station. As I vaguely recall it was used primarily for admin traffic
and things like APBs, it had a live dispatcher and real-time traffic. It sure
made for some interesting listening. Also, as I recall, they were the last
station of their type on this band. Sure glad I got them.

cables in the former Panama Canal Zone that probably connected it to other
locations in the Caribbean. In particular, he is trying to get info on some

Has anyone heard from Patrick lately? I e-mailed him early Sunday morning as

 Good Morning,

Hope everyone in the Pacific Northwest is safe from this powerful storm.
 Power
is out in many area along the Oregon and Washington coast. Lines are down and
many transformers are knocked out. Fallen trees and flooding, mostly in rural
areas, have roads closed. 129 mph wind gusts at Bay City, OR. 100 mph winds
 at
Tillimook, OR. Storm should peak between 10:00 A.M. and early afternoon.
Sustained winds expected to peak in my area at around 45 mph. However, DXing
conditions are good; Pat has a battery in place so he can DX during this huge
 storm. Stay safe.

I talked to Patrick last night on the phone and at that time he was in a

got out and went to Astoria for the night like he did last year. He said that
he would go home after the wind dies down later today. He said that he would
call later today and when I hear from him I will let you know.

It's a tad under the 530-1700 BCB but if you are east of the
Mississippi you have probably heard the beacon LYQ-529. It was
getting out pretty well last month when I was driving from
Chattanooga to Owensboro KY. I called them for info. It's at an
airport in Morrison, TN and is part of the WWRB (SW) operation. It is
  running 25w from 353703n 860504w from a 125' tower (I think he said
it was a flattop). It took a lightening hit a few days ago so is
currently off the air. They are in the process of adding some ground
radials. The phone # is 931/728-6087 and according to the web site,
it is manned from 9pm-3am EST. And finally, it should come as no
great surprise that it has already been logged out west (in OR) by
Steve Ratslaff. You will be pleased to know that LYQ is not
  installing IBOC.

 be found
in your response. Maybe instead of a stamp, each DXer can send in a
dollar, and with the $10 - $20, you can supply the station with a
gift...uh, QSL cards!! about 100 worth. You will have left the hobby
a better place than you found it.

Then, dxers will be gratefull to you and the IRCA for making a difference.
What is the IRCA for anyway? And coming from a Ham radio operator

God, that was simple. People, stop settling for less, and poor excuses.
Get involved in your hobby! Stop looking for what you can get, and add
selfishly to a raggetty old shoe box full of mold and mildew stuck in a
closet that won't see light for another ten years... and starting looking
on how to give to others, including an education on what a QSL really is,
and supply them. There needs to be a serious attitude shift here. That
should start the keyboards clicking, eh?

days and the intent is to verify your reception, you need to be
grateful. I am certain that this was the intent by WIGG. The days of
insisting upon a full data verification with date, time, frequency,
power, etc., and an unambiguous your reception is verified statement

constitutes what we DXers would categorize as a full data QSL. And I'm
not about to try and launch an education program. Again, we are lucky to
get the test and a snail-mail response to our reception reports at all.

2007-11-16 Thread kh2ar
I don't have any idea. I guess maybe those two east coast stations that he
wanted us to re-record the test announcements for. I have't seen anything from
him on this. I've just been staying busy with other tasks and haven't gotten
the re-recordings done and to him. Maybe he thought we were stealing his
thunder with all the other tests and needed to move forward on his own. Good
for him, says I.

Anyway, why don't you ask him about these tests and suggest that he share with
everyone else if they are lined up for December. I don't care if he wants to
announce and take credit for them ... we just need to make sure the word gets
out to as wide an audience as possible.

[IRCA] Confirmation/clarification of WFAW Test info for this weekend

2007-11-09 Thread kh2ar
I just spoke with CE Ernie Swanson and the test will run as advertised on the
DXTESTS.info website - i.e., midnight Sunday night until 3 a.m. Monday morning.
He apologized for any confusion the notice on the WFAW web site may have caused.

Also, Ernie said he will be at the transmitter site during the test and will be
happy to accept any prepaid phone calls from DXers at (920) 723-6033. He said
he gets lots of calls to help him stay awake!

Good luck to everyone.

I agree completely - I logged a 500-watt non-directional beacon on 350 kHz from

2007-11-07 Thread kh2ar
Thanks for your thoughts Bill. I agree that it would seem like a great idea,
and I have indeed approached close to half a dozen Canadian stations so far
that have announced they are leaving AM. Of the couple that responded, their
answer was basically it's too late to do anything. I think perhaps they were
just being polite and were not really interested in doing a test. Plus, the CEs
were also probably quite busy with the switchover. Still, I'll keep trying
whenever I hear of an impending demise of a Canadian AM station. And if anyone
has an in with a station that would be optimal. Thanks again.

I wonder-- are we missing out on a great DX opportunity by not approaching
Canadian AM stations that are scheduled to go off and asking them if they can
run a DX test? Or even sweeps (or Morse ID's) during their regular programming,
as Jim points out CHUC is doing?

I know that while some stations continue simulcasting the FM, others play a
continuous loop advising listeners to retune to the FM. You would think that it
would not be objectionable if some DX test programming would be included in
this loop.

Are Canada's regulations for maintenance testing similar to those of the US
(i.e. can stations operate their day power/antenna pattern at night)?

These ideas are not unprecedented. Many of us will recall that CHSJ 700 Saint
John NB conducted a DX test in April 1998, shortly before it moved to FM.
Unfortunately, many Canadian AM's have gone off since, with no test conducted.
Canadian AM stations are rapidly dwindling in number, and time is running out
if we are going to do something like this. Ideas or comments?

Re: [IRCA] WIGG DX Test

2007-11-04 Thread kh2ar
From initial reports, It looks as though the WIGG test didn't get out quite as
well as some of the others so far this season. I talked with Paul at about
3:20 a.m. this morning. He said he'd gotten calls from the St. Louis and
Chicago areas so far. I am at a family function in Durham, NC, and heard just
a little tone and CW. This was from a hotel room with my Sony ICF-2010, but
with lots of QRM from WHK.

As those of you who set the timers last night review your recordings, please
share your results with the lists. I'll give Paul a call early in the week to
give him a rundown on who heard his test. Thanks.

I was happy to hear that the test did happen last
night. Unfortunately, I did not last that long, as I
fell asleep and woke up twice while waiting for the
test to start, and finally went to bed about an hour
 before the scheduled test time.

My gratitude goes out to the WIGG Chief Engineer and
to Jim Pogue for arranging this test. Mississippi
would have looked very nice in my log book, but
hopefully, we will have another opportunity again.

[IRCA] NEW TIME for WIGG Test

2007-11-01 Thread kh2ar
I spoke with Paul Turner, CE at WIGG today and he is ready to go with the test
this weekend. The time for the test has been changed, however. It is now 3:00 -
4:00 a.m. Central STANDARD Time. Here are the details:

WIGG-1420 Wiggins, MS DX Test
Date: Sunday morning (late Saturday night), Nov. 4, 2007.
Time: 3:00 AM to 4:00 AM Central STANDARD Time [Please note, this will be the
morning we change from DST to standard time in most of North America, but Paul
is aware of this and will run the test on STANDARD time]
Modes of Operation: 5,000 watts using non-directional antenna pattern.
Programming: Programming will consist of special voice announcements, morse
code, tones and classic country music.

Paul says to especially listen for Floyd Kramer music, one of his favorite
artists. He also says DXers are welcome to call him as he will be running the
test live from the station.

His number (no collect calls please) is 601-964-0005.

Good luck to everyone.

Positively a fantastic article guys. My hat is off to you for doing such a
great job of raising the awareness of our niche hobby in your community. I'd
encourage everyone to try and get their local papers to write something about
them similar to this. It is a strange and wonderful hobby that we share, but
that's just the kind of factor that potentially makes it an interesting story.
Really - how many average people would dream that they could hear Saudi
Arabia on their car radio?

Perhaps the next time Brandon Jordan, J.D. Stephens and I get together for a
DXpedition in Huntsville we can try to get the paper there to write something
about our exploits.

[IRCA] IBOC testimonial

2007-09-19 Thread kh2ar
OK, I haven't jumped into this whole IBOC mess too much, but I got this
completely unsolicited comment from a friend in Toronto this morning. Although
he is a ham and works as a tech in the aeronautical communications industry, he
is not a BCB DXer by any means. Just more fuel for the fire. Here's what he had
to say:

This morning I was listening to WLAC-1510 out of Nashville. The reception was
pretty good, though sometimes it was so good I thought it was a local station.
At the same time I was trying to listen to a Buffalo station on 1520, which
happens to be a spitting distance from me compared to WLAC…. I could barely
make out that one, even though it apparently runs 50 kW.

When I told my friend about IBOC and HD (which he'd never heard of before),
this was his response:

If this IBOC thing is what you say it is then you can include me in the
“disinterested” group. I like AM radio the way it is and if they think I’ll be
spending extra bucks for a fancy AM radio then they have another thing coming.
Not interested, thank you very much.

So there you have it. Pretty interesting if you ask me. BTW, I have sent along
his comments with his permission.

Re: [IRCA] [ABDX] Re: [NRC-AM] WBT IBOC test

2007-08-14 Thread kh2ar
I have to weigh in on this one. Calling a station to bitch on the air to them
about running IBOC (at night or any other time) serves no useful purpose. In a
time when we at the club level are trying to mend and build relationships with
broadcasters, get stations to do DX tests in the middle of the night with weird
tones and Morse code, and generally do us special favors like QSL reception
reports, comments like Les mentions only tend to confirm many broadcasters'
opinions that we are just a bunch of wacko, insomniac nuts who don't have
anything better to do with our time than call these guys who are trying to make
a buck and tell them to stop it. Some of us may indeed be wacko, insomniac nuts
(myself included), but we still need to be positive about how we approach and
interact with professional broadcasters. Remember: we'll catch more flies with
honey than vinegar.

OK, end of rant. Back to the dials folks.

Listening to the WBT IBOC Test now...just heard Jim from West Virginia
call in to discuss the impact on DX'ers. Can't imagine that kind of
emotional response is going to win over many folks within the broadcasting
industry. The host talked about DX'ers afterwards...and you could nearly
hear the distain in his voice. Keep in mind folks, it's a business...and one
that hasn't been very competitive with FM for years nowthey'll latch on
to any technology that they think might help their ratings. HD Radio
sounds catchy, but so far, it hasn't really caught on.

Truthfully, I can only barely detect some hiss on the LSB, but virtually
nothing on USB. I could easily DX both channels on either side of WBT, but
then again, they're not a local to me. They do boom in at S9 +20db at
times...but even then, I can null them with a phaser, and could still DX. Of
course, if KMOX was running IBOC...it might be a problem.

That being said, I see no real benefit to IBOC for nighttime operation...and
certainly nothing that will warrant the interference that it will cause.

I agree with you. It's my understanding though that
the 100 mw is measured at a distance of 30 meters from

meter antenna.. otherwise it isn't legal.

  Paul,

What Part 15 says is that the D-C input into the
  final shall not exceed
100 mW*, not 100 mW ERP. Also, the total length of
  the antenna, feedline
and ground connection shall not exceed 3 meters.

  * You mean mW=milliwatts. MW=megawatts!

Effectively, that means the final is going to be
  VERY close to the
antenna. Reading the letter of the law, I see no
  averse language
that prohibits a complete radial system. THAT would
  make a BIG
  difference in a 100 mW's reach/coverage.

Also, since the D-C input is fixed at 100 mW, I see
  no averse
language that limits the R-F input to the final to
  any level.
That means, for example, if one uses a grounded-grid
  or grounded-base
final, if driver feeds 50 mW into the final it will
  also appear in the
output for a total of 150 mW!

  It looks legal to me.

Our barn has a galvanized roof and years ago I took
  the time and trouble
to bond the sheets together.I also put up a 10-foot
  mast atop the center
  of the roof.
But I never carried through and put a 100-mW
  transmitter up there. I
may go berzerk and put the mast back up and try a
  small BC station or
  beacon.

Meaning, they can synch more then one transmitter
  together as long as none
of the individual transmitters exceed 100MW ERP
  with a 3 meter antenna

  Got that right!
