[IRCA] Japan to end AM broadcasting?

2019-03-29 Thread Karl Zuk via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
>From The Japan Times website:

Japanese commercial broadcasters on Wednesday proposed a revision to the
broadcast law that would allow them to ditch AM radio broadcasting due to
issues over cost amid a decline in listenership.

The Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association asked the communications ministry
to implement a system revision by 2028 in order to allow radio broadcasters to
focus on FM broadcasting. Under the law, broadcasters are obliged to broadcast
on both AM and FM.

The request, made at a meeting of a panel of experts at the ministry, reflects
the heavy burden placed on broadcasters stemming from updates to facilities and
other forms of investment at a time when radio stations’ advertising revenues
are diminishing as the number of listeners falls.

“It’s extremely difficult for us to renew our facilities while continuing AM
broadcasting,” said TBS Radio Inc. Chairman Kiyohiko Irie, who participated in
the panel meeting as a representative of commercial broadcasters.

He asked for a measure to allow radio broadcasters to convert their AM
broadcasting to FM or to maintain both types of broadcasting, according to
their own business judgments.

Specifically, the broadcasters’ association proposed a test that would halt AM
broadcasting in limited areas, possibly in 2023. If no problems arise during
the trial, the association would seek the end of mandatory AM broadcasting.

Some members of the panel, which is tasked with discussing ways to strengthen
commercial broadcasters’ operating foundations, agreed with the idea of ending
AM broadcasting, while others were cautious, citing concerns that FM radio
waves have difficulty reaching mountainous areas.

While AM radio waves reach farther than FM waves, they are more prone to being
blocked by tall buildings and tend to have poor reception in urban areas.

In addition, AM radio base stations are often built in coastal areas and
require investments to protect facilities in the event of tsunami.
As a result, 43 of the 47 radio stations making AM broadcasts also have
simultaneous FM broadcasts for their AM radio programs.

[IRCA] Hawaii Adventure part two

2018-01-05 Thread Karl Zuk via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
My best advice: Get away from civilization. Going down to the beach is a great
first step. Highly recommended is Hana on the far east tip of Maui. I managed
to log KSL 1160 and 1380 ‘The Answer’ Sacramento along with many 50 kilowatters
from the west coast of the USA there beyween midnight and dawn. All this with a
Sony ICF-SW7600GR bare back.

Another excellent spot is Kona on the south shore of Big Island. I have a ham
friend who had a QTH 2200 feet above the ocean in Kona. He worked legendary
QSOs there.

If you don’t want disappointment... get away from the noise and clutter !!

This vacation also made me honor further the abilities of Gary, Pat Martin,
Mark Connelly and all the other talented DXers I have come to know over decades
of belonging to IRCA. The miracles they log take great effort and
knowledge.Bravo.

Hawaii is an amazing place, but you must learn where to go and how to manage
it! Tiny Maui has five 5 kW broadcasters and one 15 kW broadcaster! Go to Hana!
Go to Kona!

[IRCA] Hawaii adventure

2018-01-05 Thread Karl Zuk via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
I just completed my first-ever vacation to Hawaii.

I found both central Maui and the Honolulu area to be just stacked with
powerful AM and FM stations. I am guessing that the transmitter power combined
with very high transmitter locations are an effort to tackle the very
challenging terrain of Hawai’i. Even so, many repeater-translators are used as
hole fillers.

I also became very grateful for my home QTH. I live out in the country where I
have the ability to keep my enviroment quiet and have reasonable antennas. My
home sits over 500 feet ASL with not remarkable but reasonable ground
conductivity.

In Hawai’i, I was nearly at sea level sitting on lava rock with (what seemed
like) a chorus of electronic noise makers that just buried everything. I heard
very very little on shortwave. On long wave I heard POA 332 from Big Island,
VYI 327 in Maui, HHI 373 on Oahu and powerhouse LLD 353 from Lanai. LLD could
inside hotel rooms next to Interstate highways. 2000 watts goes a long way!

Colin,

Depending upon which ocean-facing motel room they place you in, you can either
end up with a TP-DXing paradise or a RFI-saturated zoo. To be perfectly honest,
last month I ended up with the latter. During the "hot season" in Hawaii (which
is the cold season for us here), the less desirable rooms seem to be the ones
we end up with. We pay more $$ and end up with more RFI.

Last month I survived by taking the modified CC Skywave, Frequent Flyer FSL,
digital recorder and logbook down to the ocean side lounge area on the south
border of the Royal Kona Resort property, facing your motel. All this gear can
easily be carried without any hassle, and setting up a TP-DXing station at the
beach level was easy (they even provided a couple of lounge chairs for the
motel guests). In Kona you can chase some of the Pacific island stations (846
and 1098) as soon as it gets dark, and about an hour after that the island
stations on 540, 621, 1017 and 1440 start to come in. With luck you can track
down 558. After about 0800 UTC you can pretty much expect to get plastered by
overpowering Asian stations, though, leaving most of the Pacific island DU's in
the noise. 621-Tuvalu rarely survived until its 1006 sign off without getting
hammered by North Korea and China, while 1440-Kiribati had a running battle
with JOWF until it signed off around the same time. 846 and 1098 usually
survived the Asian onslaught fairly well.

During wild DXing trips like this, my advice would be to expect the unexpected!

Gary

[IRCA] WBZ rollbacks

WBZ 1030 Boston is showing signs of new ownership.

WBZ AM has stopped streaming. It is gone from Radio.com and TuneIn and the CBS
Boston page.

WBZ AM has also dropped their HD Radio from 1030 AM and from WBZ FM HD-3 on
98.5 MHz.

If you want to hear them now, you have to revert to good old AM.

I wonder if this will be the fate of all CBS stations that will be farmed out
to new management?

Re: [IRCA] OT 2014 Dodge Caravan radio question

2017-03-15 Thread Karl Zuk via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
Hi Pat:
A couple of things to keep in mind here.
AM radio antennas are usually either etched into windshields or poorly coupled
into rooftop modules that also designed for satellite reception.
Since new vehicles are truly spaceships, they are equipped with an arsenal of
CPU driven computing and logic. This creates a beehive of computer noise.Even if
your car's AM radio is sensitive and selective, the onboard noise will mask what
it can really hear. All the SDR magic in the world isn't worth much with a +20
noise level.Even worse, when you are in 'aux' mode with the car nearly off,all
the CPUs keep purring away. There is no relenting even if you are sitting in a
parking lot or at a sea shore.
The new world answer is Internet radio now common in cars.Driving home, I can
hear Radio New Zealand International in perfect stereowithout any worries about
propagation. I can hear several varieties of ABC Australia, too.It compensates
for my 9580 withdrawal every morning!I'm really good except when I pass a pole
pig sending out signals like a spark gaptransmitter from 110 years ago. The
more things change
Pat: I doubt a new Caravan has an AM trimmer. It is all incorporated into the
design now.It is probably software controlled.I have memories of removing knobs
on pushbutton car radios to trim the antenna matching. Those days are gone - but
we are not gone yet! Also, forget the AM boosters. They only amplify noise.Best
solution: Drive closer to the AM station (how sad.)Enjoy the cow pastures and
beautiful seashores.
All the best, Karl From: Patrick Martin

Subject: [IRCA] OT 2014 Dodge Caravan radio question

I recently bought a 2014 Dodge Caravan as my old 1997 finally quit. Anyway, I
like the vehicle, but I found the AM section of the radio nearly useless (FM
and CD are fine). The noise level was terrible with computer noise. Yesterday
in checking the antenna was not too tight. I tightened the antenna and the
noise is gone. The signal strength could be better. I have not taken the radio
out to check, but is there a peaking screw (cap) like there used to be? Anyone
know? I see there are AM boosters for car radios, but I presume that may
generate noise.

Any thoughts?  The old Caravan AM sections were pretty decent in sensitivity,
but not many listen to AM now. Thanks.

I want to spread the info about a MW DX test this week that I am helping with

help they can get, primarily recordings to see how the station is getting out.
The guidelines for the test are below:

* Date/Time: May 25-28 1300-1700 UTC
* Frequency: 1431 (power will likely be between 100-500kw)
* Location: Mongolia with a target audience of South Korea
* Send recordings to c...@aol.com or upload to
https://www.dropbox.com/request/gXQDEsPBCtGiuXn4UcIb
* Recording preferences: MP3 format, mono, no less than 32kbps, and no longer
than 30 minutes
* File name should be the sender's initials (example: mine would be "CK") - day
- time.mp3 (for May 24 at 1am: "ck-24-0100.mp3). If uploading to the Dropbox,
please send an e-mail to the above address stating your listening location as
well.
* If possible, do not set the receiver bandwidth to be narrow, but wide AM (at
least 6kHz for example).

I hope we can get some help for these engineers who made the journey halfway
around the world to set up this test.

interesting segues like Wooly Bully into Jesus Christ Superstar. Wednesday
afternoon I heard a bizarre Smurfs song air for about a minute. It must have
been intolerable at the station, too. Someone abruptly advanced the playlist to

[IRCA] WRCR Rockland County, NY

2015-07-10 Thread Karl Zuk via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
WRCR Spring Valleyheats up its new tower and transmitter in Ramapo, NY on
Monday, July 13th. Instead of broadcasting on 1300 AM with 500 watts daytime 83
watts nights, WRCRwill be heard on 1700 AM with 10,000 watts daytime 1,000
watts nights with a HDRadio signal.
Notable engineer Tom Ray, chief engineer of WOR for years andyears, was project
manager for the move.NortheastTowers installed the single 198 foot tower. Just
two feet under the limit!WRCR's signal should be hard tomiss!

The implications of this newcomer are many. With its broad HD Radio signal, WRCR
will probably wipe out reception of the pirate and TIS/HAR community on 1700
and 1710 and crush the coverage of WPTX 1690 down in Maryland. It will probably
throw snurdles on WTTM 1680 near Philadelphia, as well.
Will the HD plague ever end?

What will be heard on 1300 with WRCR gone?

WRCR serves many ethnic groups along with the community at large. You can't say
that about many stations these days.

WAXB 850 Ridgefield, CT - 2.5 kW daytime - has been silent for a few days.
It was a classic rock oldies station.
The low power FM translator for this station W297AN is still on the air on
107.3 - 99 watts.
The FM covers nearby Danbury, CT primarily.

Re: [IRCA] THE CASE FOR A 2015 JOINT IRCA-NRC CONVENTION

2014-10-04 Thread Karl Zuk via IRCA
---BeginMessage---
Hi Mark:

I speak from experience.
I chaired the IRCA convention in 1990.
This was a last-minute hail-Mary convention when no one stepped up to the plate.
The venue was Knoxville, Tennessee.
I was a speaker at the very first Monitoring Times convention rooming with Al
Weiner of WBCQ fame.
I volunteered to put together an IRCA convention and tried to meld it with MT's
sessions.
Two would be better than one, right?

I thought the convention was a lot of fun.
For one, we shared the hotel with a clown convention. Priceless pictures!

I learned that you have to know your audience.
Even today, the two clubs really do have different personalities.
I never took a vote or a survey, but I had my dissenters.
Even if you are doing this from the charity of your heart and good meaning,
some people wanted a fully developed product.

Al and I set up three or four station tours.
We were hundreds of miles away from the convention location and didn't
know the first thing about the market or the players in the business.

We put together a late night DX session in a remote park.
I remember a park ranger wondering what all of us were doing with thousands of
feet of wire
in the dark. When I explained we were a nationwide group and we were listening
to
the radio, the ranger said: In all my years of being up here, you are the
first people who
really are listening to the radio (heh heh.)

And I managed to endear Bob and Judy Grove to buy the idea.
We tried really hard to make this happen from afar.
I think we achieved about a B minus grade. Much better than an F or a zero...

I felt incredibly bad about one IRCAn and his friend who travelled all the way
to Knoxville
and then felt abandoned when Al and I had to head back to NYC on Sunday
afternoon
to make it back to work on Monday. I remember him saying that he just watched
the hotel elevators
go up and down all afternoon. This was someone I really liked. Jeez.

I really feel for you and your heart.
This is one of those things that really should make sense but doesn't.
I'll be very curious to see how your idea is accepted.
We are getting older. The numbers are thinning out.
The business is thinning out and becoming obsolete.
I work in this business. Computers rule. Rough times!

Let's keep trying to get someone to grab the ring for an all IRCA get-together.
Contact me directly if you would like to talk about it.
It would be a good conversation.

My best wishes always. Karl Zuk N2KZ Katonah, NY

 Greetings.  If you're tired of
this subject, hit 'delete.'  If you want to
help ensure the ongoing camaraderie within NRC and IRCA,
 read on.

We note that, following the Minneapolis joint convention in
 2013, no one
stepped forward to host a 2014 NRC show.  At IRCA, John
 and Nancy Johnson
fulfilled an earlier commitment to host the 50th in
 Billings; even though
 they had moved to Arizona.

Now there are holes in two club calendars for 2015.
 Some tentative interest
has been communicated to our club convention coordinators.

It's apparent to folks who are tuned in to these matters
 that NRC and IRCA
can successfully work together without political
 anguish.  Every indicator
in recent years is that joint efforts and cross-support
 works for the
betterment of both clubs...while not impairing each club's
 individuality.

If you accept that premise, then you would agree that a
 joint 2015
convention makes a lot of sense.  That's because, IN
 POOLING CLUB SUPPORT WE
MAKE HOSTING A CONVENTION THAT MUCH EASIER!

So I would like to challenge readers of this note to put
 aside the idea that
it's just too much work to host a convention.  Active
 members of both
clubs have already pledged their support, input,
 contributions, physical
labor and organizational skills to a joint conclave of TWO
 CLUBS WHICH SHARE
A COMMON HOBBY.  My gosh...right now, if you announced
 an interest in
hosting a joint show, you'd quickly receive offers of
 support.  We're also
talking about a joint 'task force' that could be of deep
 support in such an
 endeavor, handling scheduling, promotion/publicity,
 coordination and
execution.  All we really lack is a confirmed location
 and an agreeable
 date.

The many previous hosts of the separate NRC and IRCA
 conventions did a great
job, but lately, interest in hosting seems to be
 diminishing.  We learned
from our 2013 Minneapolis experience that doing a JOINT
 convention of the
clubs was easier than a single-club event, since we had so
 much talent and
 support to draw from!

SO, Mister or Ms. club-member:  Now's the time to step
 forward to indicate
an interest, so that you can judge for yourself
