[IRCA] Springfield Armory 1710 +ve ID in Europe

2014-04-11 Thread Ken, Scotland
I finally had a good signal today, or should I say better signal from
1710kHz.

I have clips on this page...

http://www.dxarchive.com/mw/transatlantic_logs_april_2014.html

There are 4 clips from today inc a web address from the YL on another stn.

But the Springfield Armoury / Armory id came in around 0500 here in
Scotland.

These outfits must be running pretty low power to be travelling across
the Atlantic...

[IRCA] clips of 1710 in Scotland

2014-04-10 Thread Ken, Scotland
I have a couple of clips, one from today, 10th April around 0503UTC,
while the other is from 7th April. and is probably too long but
there is mention of MA during it as well Does it sound like the
audio from the Military museum in MA?? The YL may actually be another
station when you hear it.

[IRCA] Re 1710 UNID heard in Europe

2014-04-09 Thread Ken, Scotland
I see the posts re 1710. Is there anyone with a recording they can post
of the 3m loop from Springfield MA??

I have been hearing what sounds like American English on 1710 (thats how
weak the signal is, only a few words here and there)

The funny thing is, it seems to be there only at 0500UTC / GMT. I even
recorded 0430 and 0530 today, and find there is no trace. Maybe I should
record an hour around that time.

0500 is first light here, so of course it will be the peak time, but I
did hear the TIS thing from NJ a few times throughout the night some
months ago.

What I seem to be hearing is an OM and YL alternating, and sometimes
some kind of music. I don't seem to have found any words of significance
yet.

I looked last night for the MA Perseus server, but it wasn't on.

[IRCA] 1330 sweepers

2014-03-23 Thread Ken, Scotland
I can also hear those sweepers at 0526, many thanks Tim for the video to
help us along... just after that the UK splattery audio gets in the way
again. from various ILR crud I thought I had weak sweepers
earlier on.

Glad I had partial code though The sweepers are great, but code is
more of a 100% id...

I will upload an audio clip of thiese ones tomorrow. Just off out to
make the best of the sun!!

Thanks to all that helped arrange this one...

Anyone know if the 1450 test went out last night??? Or was it thurs,
fri, or next week,,lol...

[IRCA] What is the freq of the CW tone?

2014-03-22 Thread Ken, Scotland
Unless I missed a message, I have yet to see a posting that states the
freq of the CW tone as seen on the Perseus screen. I am struggling here
with a Euro, and have a power of false sounding high tones from music
from 1332.

Any Perseus screen shots??

Did anyone finally work out what day the 1450 test was / is to be aired,
never mind the time...LOL... GMT time and date anyone??

[IRCA] KCKM DX TEST HEARD IN SCOTLAND - ONLY JUST

2014-03-22 Thread Ken, Scotland
I have been messing around with the file / recording from last nights dx
test time.

I thought I was beaten by splattery audio from a UK local on 1332, but
thanks to the efforts of the dxers here that mentioned the exact times
for code, and also to Bret Taylor for the Perseus screenshot showing
that it was a 1kHz tone, I managed to find some partial code. It was at
the 0525 code.

I really had to turn the bandwidth right down to pick this out. It was a
real challenge here. Amazing it was easy in Sweden...

I would never have heard this in 100 years with a traditional receiver.

The recording here has the partial code repeated twice.

http://www.dxarchive.com/mw/transatlantic_logs_march_2014.html

A DOORS record played on 1332 also made the Perseus screen look like a
Top Band CW contest..lol...

[IRCA] Undercover Radio 1720 heard in Scotland

2014-03-10 Thread Ken, Scotland
I have only just been listening to the Perseus files for Saturday night,
and Undercover Radio was heard on 1720. I only have 10m around the top
of the hours recorded through the night, so I hear 1720 at 04, 05, and
06GMT.

I would imagine Undercover Radio would love to have a report. Not sure
of their email address, but I am sure I will find it on the web.

[IRCA] Re Perseus Files from 1986!!

2014-02-26 Thread Ken, Scotland
I am fascinated by the conversion of a broadband vhs tape recording to a
Perseus file. Well done..

So alined freq for both, set PC date back, and played into perseus
aerial socket and press record?? Is that how it was done???

And it worked

Any chance of posting a 5m or so toth Perseus file somewhere???

For 1986 and 1991??? Night time files would be of interest as well...

Re DX test on 1440 - Pity the station never started around 0300 when the
mighty Luxembourg was still silent. It was on air by 0500 UTC. Maybe
next time. Condx were much much better on the sat night by chance ,
and might have made it over luxy , as some of the others on 1440 do here
in Europe.. Maybe next time. Lux is on for 0400 GMT at this time,
till end March if there was any chance of a repeat???...

[IRCA] 1710 yesterday heard in Scotland

2014-01-31 Thread Ken, Scotland
I noticed someone has heard the same ann I have heard here in Scotland
yesterday morning, 30th as well as 29th on 1710..

It gave the call of WQFG, and is in NJ...

There was a music station also mixing at times but couldnt id it...
Soeil, or Celestrial??

My audio clipwith call repeated a few times at the start.. I just
didnt have a peak at any time to record the whole ann, as it was very
weak...

Rx Perseus SDR, and 500m beverage..

http://www.dxarchive.com/mw/audio/140130_0103_0257_wqfg_tis_stn_1710.mp3

Another dxer heard it in Scotland back in Sept I think it was,

The X band has been roaring its head off this last couple of days.

Might be an ideal time for any naughty pirates to try 1720 again..

Re: [IRCA] 1390 kHz - odd noise

2014-01-28 Thread Ken, Scotland

Therefore, the question remains,

Does the audio of WABH on one receiver match up to the star trek audio
on 1390 and 1370 exactly..

1380 is difficult here unless conditions are very good due to high
powered French stn on 1377,

two receivers required i guess

A bizzare effect, and heard in UK this am again..

[IRCA] ODDITY ON 1390 and WJDI

2014-01-23 Thread Ken, Scotland
My first question. Was there a transmitter on 1380 going crazy last
night, noted in my 0800UTC perseus recording???

There were two places on the band the had audio like something from Star
Trek. 1389.5 ish and close by 1370 as well... Suggesting a 1380 txer
putting out crap either side maybe??

Like nothing I have ever heard though.Audio clip and Persues
screenshot here...

http://www.dxarchive.com/mw/transatlantic_logs_january_2014.html

===

WJDI:

Very interesting item about that station... Did they ever receive any
reports from Europe??

I remember the tales we picked up on here in Europe at the time about
the QRO. I have no logs around Xmas 1996, but on 24/12/97 I have an unid
that I never accounted for at the time. It showed up on 1640.9 playing
Let it Snow and Walking in a Winter Wonderland... Was there any
transmission here, heard at 2155UTC, Christmas Eve 1997. Sounded
American rather than a Dutch pirate..

I am still looking for the tape, and the clip isnt sadly on any of my id
tapes So turning the place upside down looking..

Radio Metalica Worldwide on 6955 around this time was also pumping some
strong signals into Europe,

[IRCA] Perseus SDR - 6 years on and still a gem

2014-01-12 Thread Ken, Scotland
I am not too sure why some dxers think recording the full band on a
Perseus on a nightly basis at the top of the hour would give them time
problems It is not half as bad as it may seem Though I am
judging this from a transatlantic dxers point of view. If I bothered
much with the Euro channels here I may find the going tougher.

After using the wideband recordings on an almost nightly basis since
2007, I would hate to have to go back to single channel dxing. It would
seem like going back to my old domestic radiogram that I used as a
youngster in the 70's.

I notice though that some dxers make notes of everything they hear in a
certain file!! Phew, that seems a load of work. I don't even keep a
written log book now. All notes and logs are made on my web page, as and
when I hear anything unusual... And that serves as the log book.. I
don't log WWKB or WBBR every night I can hear them any time... My
all time list notes the common stations that are almost never logged,
unless something unusual is heard. But using the Perseus highlights what
really are common regular stations, that I used to class as good dx!! I
have a very different view now of what is a common station.

You get to know the common stations, and for me it is common
transatlantic stations on the 10khz splits A quick check of a file
will let you know if it is worth listening more closely.
eg on 26/12 we had a superb Mexican opening on the 0800 recording, so
that particular 10m recording was worth taking some time over and I
will also keep the file, as there were personal firsts at that time.

Other mornings, like today, offered little of interest first shot, and I
have no doubt the files will be deleted shortly..

Sometimes, like early January last year, the band is superb for a few
days, openings to the mid west and the west coast, and those files are
kept and checked every now and again, incase I missed anything, or even
just for the memories of listening to an exceptional morning of reception.

Aye, the Perseus was a technological breakthrough as far as MW dxing was
concerned, so much so that I don't have the AOR or NRD 545 and more. A
life changing receiver, and it encouraged me to write a bit about it.

http://www.dxarchive.com/mw/perseus_a_life_changing_receiver.html

I should really rewrite this article after 4 and a half years There
is probably a lot more to add..
