Re: [IRCA] Using PC Software for multiple timer recordings
Dave.. I record on 2 different computers. One using "Skimmer Plus" from Broadcast Software International. Primarily used by broadcast stations for air checks, it can be a bit pricey (399.00 for a single deck) My other computer uses OMT's Logging software The nice thing about these is I can log in from the web and playback the files...Great when I am on the road. I hear that TOTAL RECORDER is good but i have never used it..and it is more affordable I recorded 1340 for A FULL year across the TOH. Yielded a bunch of new logs for me... Hoping for Es on FM the other day, I recorded a two hour block of 92.7, using Audacity. No skip. Now I'm thinking about recording MW signals near the top of the hour. I see that Audacity has a timer option but IIRC, it allows just one entry. I want to schedule 12:58 am - 1:10, 1:58 - 2:10, 2:58 - 3:10 and so on. Does anyone have any recommendations for audio software that allows such multiple timer recordings? [IRCA] AM LOGBOOK TO CLOSE
It is with deep regret that I announce the closing of the AMLOGBOOK. I no longer have the time nor the desire to spend the countless hours of updating and keeping track of AM Radio stations. I have not DX'ed in three years and do not see any Dxing in my immediate future. Noise levels have gotten to the point where Dxing for me is a waste of time, not to mention the lack of anything worth listening to on this forgotten radio band. It's been a pleasure to provide station information for radio hobbyists since 1995, and I am glad I was able to provide it as a FREE service to DX'ers. But time marches on. I will leave the AMLOGBOOK site posted for the nextseveral months. I will then be canceling my domain and email. Thank you for all your support over the years. All the best. But I can understand when a labour of love turns into, well, labour. The band certainly isn't what it used to be, and I there certainly are many worthwhile things to do with the brief blip of time most of us get on this planet. I do hope that you will in some way keep in touch with those of us who persist at the dials, and you'll always be welcomed back into the active ranks. May I make one suggestion. The volunteers who put together the paper NRC AM log also have done a marvelous job. I've used these year after year as I have also logged onto Lee's site on a regular basis. I would gladly pay for some kind of combined effort. Lee, I know you want to step down. But is there a way to pass this on rather than ending it? Could it perhaps be a joint IRCA-NRC effort? I like the NRC log because it's handy at the radio table, and I can write notes in it. I like Lee's online log because it's perpetually up to date. The two combined are really indispensable for the serious DXer of North American AM radio. I realize these things cost money. Perhaps a higher discounted rate to members of both clubs, a slightly lesser discount to members of one of the clubs, and of course a higher annual fee for non-members of any of the two clubs. I will join/rejoin both clubs and also contribute to a subscription. The paper log could still be printed every summer/fall - the timing is perfect. I'd be happy to volunteer my time to oversee Canadian data for both of the combined entities - say as Canadian logbook/directory editor. Anyhow, hate to see a very good piece of work come to an end. Re: [IRCA] LF Engineering H-800 opinions sought
I have used this product for many years here in Central Florida. The only problem I have seen was some overload due to 3 stations with-in 3 miles all running 5 KW. But since they drop to 1K/37 and 50 watts or so at night it was no problem. Since the 1KW went silent, the antenna has worked perfectly. I have also sold several of these to my broadcast customers. I had to replace one vertical element the victim of south Florida lightning -- the inside box was okay -- and did not consider not doing so. As soon as I get my act together I'll send the damaged unit to LFE for repair and then enjoy two H-800s. I use the H-800 for HF as well, so a second one will eliminate some conflicts. I have no facility for any sort of wire antenna. Instead I have the H-800 and an LFE M-601. I use that antenna combination with a Quantum Phaser. Unfortunately I can't offer any comparison with a wire, but I can say the H-800 works very well with a phaser. Curt --- W. Just for the record, I don't, in fact, have a dog in this fight - or rather, I do enough little things for enough different dog-owners that they're all nipping at each other. The division of Clear Channel that owns Inside Radio/10watts.com, for which I work on a consulting basis, is completely separate from the broadcast division. I'd be surprised if Mark Mays even knows my little division exists. We're at about the same level as the billboard division or the concert venues, before those were sold. My paycheck from 10watts.com (which, as yet, isn't even including HD Radio information in our data, though we're considering it) is as closely affected by what Clear Channel Radio does with AM IBOC as Kevin's (assuming he's still working where I think he is) is affected by the ad revenue at the Weekly Standard or subscriber figures at BSkyB, just to pick a couple of random unrelated News Corp. properties. (And again, just for the record, I own no shares of Clear Channel stock nor that of any other broadcaster.) The actual broadcasting that I do these days is for WXXI, which is a community-owned public broadcaster. Our main FM signal (WXXI-FM 91.5) will be adding HD shortly, and I'll be involved in that effort from the programming and promotion side, but I'm actually arguing internally *against* any plans to put HD on our AM signal (WXXI 1370), since it won't bring any benefits to the station that I can see. So if I have any dog in the AM IBOC fight there, it's from the "anti" side. (I do think public broadcasters like WXXI have the most to gain from FM multicasting, since we have more content available to us than we can possibly fit on our existing analog signals, along with demand from our audience to hear that content and a willingness from said audience to buy new receivers to hear it.) And yes, I write for Radio World as a freelancer. The long slow slog towards IBOC has given me plenty to write about for the last few years, to be sure, but I'd have a lot to write about whether it succeeds or not. Contrary to some of the views expressed here, I don't think the news pages of RW have been cheerleading for IBOC. The editorials are a different matter, but I have nothing to do with those. I also do some consulting, and in that role I have advised several stations about adding FM IBOC where it's made sense (primarily in the public radio arena), as well as advising others not to do so. I have yet to advise any client to add AM IBOC - and yes, they've asked. So, that's where all my dogs are (except for Freckles, the NERW Wonder Dog, who's probably curled up in a pile of laundry downstairs enjoying the sunshine, and she doesn't much care for radio in any form, digital or not.) I'll ask again that you address what I have to say based on what I'm saying, not on who you think I work for, where I live, how far my hairline has receded (too far, thanks), or any other extraneous factors. I speak only for myself in any of these discussions, and I've always made it a point of pride when dealing with any employer or potential client to make sure that I'm not compelled by contract to muzzle what I have to say in forums like this, or to spout a corporate line with which I may disagree. That said...we're in agreement on most of your points about the problems MW IBOC faces. That's why I'm interested in ideas like the ones in the Richard Johnson post that kicked off this thread. They may or may not bear fruit - and believe me, Richard's getting kicked around something fierce over on the BC list where the post originated - but if we're ever to have the "magic bullet" radio that can do some sort of adaptive DSP and run forever on a single AAA battery, it's more likely to come out of dialogue like that than out of sad-sack predictions that we'll all be hauling our Drakes and R390s to the scrap dealer in six months' time. s ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ir

I also caught the replay last night.. well done Scott...!! I am not dipping my foot into the IBOC discussion, but the show was well done and I enjoyed it. And yes, we really do have a very hard time being heard in places like Brockport and Fairport, well within our market, thanks to an AM signal that was designed to cover the market as it existed in 1944. Streaming is part of the solution to that problem, but the FM HD2 simulcast may well be a part of it, too. We'll never know if we don't try. Adjacent frequencies? When we were out at the get-together at Jim Renfrew's place in Clarendon (just west of Brockport, 20 miles or so from Rochester), I had no problem at all hearing CJLX on 91.3 from Belleville, Ontario. I can't recall if we heard anything on 91.7; if we did, it would have been CIXL from Welland, Ontario. The tech segment in question is called "Mixed Media"; it airs Wednesdays at 5:44 ET during All Things Considered, and we have archives of the segments here: http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/wxxi/news.newsmain?action=section&SECTION_ID=2446 There's also a podcast of today's show here: http://www.wxxi.org/radio/hd/index.html It's true, as Glenn says, that the guests were there to promote HD. That, after all, was the purpose of the show - if the system is to have any chance of succeeding, it had better have some promotion from broadcasters themselves. s The first NRC/WTFDA joint Convention is just around the corner! Broadcasters are, as well, and have a lot at stake in doing something to see the situation is improved. 73, Rene' W2FIL, Lansdale, PA --- There's been a lot of discussion recently on various engineering sites and publications, and among radio dxers, about the deteriorating state of AM coverage. I would obviously concur with this (who couldn't?). The situation is evident to anyone who listens to AM radio, and it seems to be getting worse as time goes by. Laying IBOC and BPL aside for a moment, which have their own set of interfering dynamics, there are other issues that are becoming more predominant on the AM band. Most notably there has been a dramatic increase in electrical noise on the band in recent years. This is getting worse and is having the effect of dramatically reducing coverage in many cases. All of the latest electronic gadgetry seems to be the major cause of "dirty power lines" and other noise. Among the devices that seem to be most culpable are medical devices, computers, light dimmers, and - one of the biggest offenders - newly designed electronic, SCR controlled, traffic signals. There are so many other devices, they become too numerous to mention. What concerns me as an engineer is the effect this is having on listenership, as well as the practicality of continuing to use the 0.5 mV/m contour as an indication of normal daytime coverage. From listening to our stations and many others, it appears that a more realistic figure would be 2.0 mV/m or even higher in extremely bad situations - as much as 5 or more millivolts. I have had discussions with our general manager and many others over the past few years, including sales people, listeners, and others concerning this phenomenon. I get calls regularly from listeners who complain that they have great difficulty in hearing the stations because of "static." Be they managers, sales people, listeners, or others, they all say the same thing: "The station's coverage just isn't what it use to be!" And I have to agree with them. WNTP, for instance, does not have nearly the daytime coverage it had when I worked here in the early 80s...even with one less tower and an loosened directional pattern. As far management and sales are concerned, and therefore from the standpoint of those who are largely non-technical, the first thing to come under suspicion is a change in the transmission system (either transmitter, or antenna, or both). When one performs a quickie proof on the antenna system, and checks the power/impedance/etc, all is found to be normal. On WNTP, for instance, our Inverse Distance Fields on all radials are pretty much exactly what they were in 1986 when the system was built; but, electrical noise has reduced usable coverage by at least 1/3. I know that we are not the only stations who are experiencing such problems. And it is not just broadcasters. The problem also exists for hams and other users of the radio spectrum. It is evident across the nation. In a large market such as Philadelphia, the electrical noise can be incredible. For instance, attempting to listen anywhere near the electrified 25,000 Volt, 25 Hz powered commuter rail lines is next to impossible. This is especially evident on the Amtrak Pennsylvania main line near Downingtown and Thorndale, along which Business Route 30 runs for several miles. When such lines extend for great distances along heavily used roads, it becomes a major issue. Another example is a traffic light located about a mile from both our transmitter site and the site of KYW. Since new circuitry was installed a while ago, it is impossible to listen to either WNTP or KYW (both of which are 50kw) or WFIL (which is 5kw). The buzz from the light circuit creates a loud hum ! that overpowers the audio of these and other stations. "Buzzes" from other traffic lights are just as bad. I fear that all of this does not bode well for the future of AM radio. Electrical noise is reaching a point of being such a concern that IBOC and BPL, as issues, pale by comparison. I say all of this to ask a simple question: is there some way broadcasters can combat the encroachment of noise on AM? I the answer to that question.
