[IRCA] XHDATA D-808

2019-03-10 Thread Mike Keval Brooker
I don't normally buy stuff from Ebay. But when I do, it's a XHDATA D-808 that
isn't legally sold in North America. Cost $AUD 118 including shipping from
Australia via Singapore. It arrived by Canada Post on Friday, less than 2
weeks after I ordered it. It's a little bigger than the C Crane Skywave, so
the C Crane will still be my go-to radio for road trips and for travel
where every cubic millimeter of backpack space is crucial. The Skywave also
has the Weather band, which is good to have for traveling, and runs on AA
batteries, which are sold virtually everywhere. Jury is still out on the
D-808's lithium battery. I have no idea how long the it will last, how
often it will need to be recharged (so far, it doesn't seem like it will
need to be plugged in every night like my phone) and how many recharges it
can handle before it craps out and needs to be replaced. I don't think
lithium batteries like the one in the D-808 are easy to find or are even
sold in North America.

The D-808's user manual is written in pretty poor Chinglish. But this is
non unusual with many made-in-China products. It doesn't come with
headphones or a charger. Only a USB charging cable.

So far, after using it only a couple days, the D-808 has a slight edge over
the C Crane on AM, a bigger edge on SW. But neither will beat my 1978
Panasonic RF-2200.

I didn't even find out about the WION-1430 test until too late. No chance I
would have heard them anyway with a local pest on the frequency (CHKT).

2018-12-05 Thread Mike Keval Brooker
A few loggings from a recent visit to Detroit MI

WINA-1070 Charlottesville, VA 11/30 0708 – way over CHOK and WFNI with
“News radio 1070 WINA” ID into local weather.

WGNZ-110 Fairborn, OH 11/30 0722 – creaming WBT and in-state rival WJML
with “Good news radio WGNZ...playing music with a message” into gospel song.

WVEL-1140 Pekin, IL 12/2 0801 – while trying for CHRB, noted over WRVA with
station promo for donations during Through the Bible Radio show:
“...remember to write WVEL in the memo portion of your check”.

WCBL-1290 Benton, KY 11/30 0712 – fighting CJBK, WHIO and others in the
jumble with Mailboxes Plus ad, “we’ve got the songs that are better than
good...Oldies 99.1 WCBL” into “Suspicion” by Terry Stafford.

CIWW-1310 Ottawa, ON 11/30 0704 – through nulled semi-local WDTW with “1310

DX-friendly station perhaps. But my QSL from KRVN-880 took more than two
years to arrive! No follow-up reports sent for that logging in 1978, but I
have heard KRVN a number of times under WCBS since then.

Re: [IRCA] LINK FOR XHDATA D-808 PURCHASE

2018-07-31 Thread Mike Keval Brooker
Is there any reason why this radio is not available in North America,
except through sketchy fly-by-night re-sellers? I would be tempted to buy
one if it was offered by, say, Universal Radio. Slightly better than the C
Crane Skywave, yes. But I don't think it would beat my 40 year old
Panasonic RF2200.

This much-anticipated (NOT!) near-local noted testing with classical
music, announcements mentioning test transmissions and giving phone

certainly taken long enough for this station (format will be news-talk) to
get on the air before the CRTC would have canceled their construction

[IRCA] Detroit loggings

2016-11-26 Thread Mike Keval Brooker
Not a great location for DX, nonetheless the following items were logged in
downtown Detroit (Marriott at the Renaissance Center), with C Crane Skywave

610 WTVN OH Columbus – 11/20 0820 – potent
groundwave in downtown Detroit with Ohio Basement Authority ad, “News radio
610 WTVN, an iHeartRadio station”. Still putting in a good groundwave at
mid-day.

   930 WEOL OH Elyria – 11/22 1557 – barely escaping
WWJ-950 IBOC crud with local news, “and now your WEOL weather” into local
forecast.

  1010 unID-- - 11/22 1701 – someone with REL
format (KXEN-St. Louis on 50 kw day power?), fighting CFRB with USA Radio
news and gospel talk.

  1080 WNWIILOak Lawn – 11/23 1712 – presumed over
WTIC and WOAP with Polish religious-sounding talk.

  1250 WSSP WI Milwaukee – 11/20 0800 – over
religious talker (likely not CJYE) with “join us...at WSSP Milwaukee” ToH
ID into run-down of college football scores.

  1320 WOBL OH Oberlin – 11/22 1615 – over expected
Michigander WLIS-Lansing with local weather, promo for Christmas flea
market on Route 113 in Amherst into C

  1360 WSAI OH Cincinnati – 11/22 1616 – over
expected Michiganders WKMI and WKYO with Proflowers.com ad, “Fox Sports
1360” local traffic.

  1380 WBEL ILSouth Beloit – 11/20 0615 – over
near-local WPHM-Port Huron with “WBEL the big AM 1380” slogan into “Silence
is Golden” by the Tremeloes.

  1430 WEEF ILDeerfield – 11/22 1653 – presumed in
mix of news and sports talkers with Polish or other Slavic language talk,
man and woman alternating.

  1460 KXNO IA Des Moines – 11/22 1703 – over all
comers with ID as “the sports fanatic…1460 KXNO” into local sports show
talking Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball.

  1570 WFUR MI Grand Rapids – 11/23 1720 – alone on
frequency with religious talk, promo for FM //, “AM 1570 is now on the FM
dial at 92.9…WFUR”.

  1580 WJFK MD Morningside – 11/23 1700 – dominating
frequency as they used to in Toronto before CKDO with string of Ad Council
PSAs (USDA, FEMA, etc.), “Sports radio 1580...WJFK AM Morningside” ToH ID.
Disappeared after 1702, presumably due to pattern change, and a weak CKDO
came up.

  1700 KBGG IA Des Moines – 11/23 1654 – now dominant
since demise of WRCR (now webcast-only) with Ace Hardware ad and station
promo “...listen now on 1700 KBGG”.

CJRU-1280 aka "the Scope @ Ryerson" now on the air with regular programming

putting in a fair signal at my midtown Toronto home. Same as the last user

counties in different colors so they would look like states. If I can find

WAGL was a regular visitor every afternoon into central Fla giving the 5kw
daytimers in Melbourne and Inverness fits during critical hours. They ran
a four tower array giving them about 270 kw to the south
Several times over the past 20 years I picked them up in Grand Turk and on
the north coast of the Dominican Republic. they squirted out about 20 kw
 to the NNE toward Charlotte.
It was a sad road to the end. The station tried country, classic country
and Music of your life in the final years supplemented by religious
programs in the morning, but nothing really worked. They were into a web
 presence
early on selling a business directory to local businesses. I would guess
the electric bill was close to 3 grand a month. Len's demise and that of
the station were on a parallel path. Sad there was no one to carry on but
Lancaster has almost become part of the metro of Charlotte and the metro
FM's have killed local radio in the area.
As DXers we have lost a great target and it will be missed.

They also ran a DX Test in, I believe, 1976, likely during a WQXR silent
 period. Easily heard, nice QSL.

Their DX test on Jan. 28, 1990 got out exceptionally well. I had a
cassette recording of that test that was at nearly armchair level. They
 played
Dixie as part of that broadcast, and WAGL's 50,000 watts were enough to
cause splatter on 1550 and 1570 at my QTH in southwest Iowa. With
 WBSC-1550
having been gone for a while now, there's two legendary top-of-the-dial
voices in the Palmetto State that are now just memories.

I remember the DX Tests I arranged from them back in the 90's. Boy, were
they well-heard! I think at least one other test was arranged by others,
 with similar reults.

Mr. Phillips was a pleasure to work with in arranging these tests, and
 extremely accommodating to DXers.

Daytimer WAGL-1560 Lancaster, South Carolina, once a
continent-spanning best bet for the Palmetto State, is no
more. Longtime owner B. Len Phillips Jr. died in
September at 77, and the license has recently been turned in
  and the station deleted.

DX test and sunrise receptions on the West Coast were
commonplace at one time, with KPMC Bakersfield off
nightly. WAGL operated with 10 and later 50
  kilowatts.

A DX test on October 18, 1993 brought in a report from Paul
Ormandy in Oamaru, New Zealand. Len was quite pleased
and included a copy of Paul's report as part of the verie
  package.

There's a YouTube posting of a 1980 recording of Len doing
the sign-off; toward the end you can hear traces of the
sign-off of long-gone WTRQ in Warsaw, North Carolina.
