[IRCA] ELAD SDR - Just ordered one
After reading many very favorable comments on the ICRA digest about the receiving ability of the ELAD SDR they seemed almost astonishing at times. I wrote a private note to Robert Ross asking him if he was given an ELAD in exchange for his comments. He properly found the question offensive, as he should have. I posed some questions on the IRCA board and several other places and got helpful responses from several people, including several phone calls. After doing more research it became clear that this radio is a fine choice for MW Dxing. I ordered an ELAD yesterday and look forward to using it. My apology is extended to Mr. Ross. [IRCA] Question about ELAD SDR
Thinking about getting an ELAD SDR. Does anyone know from personal experience whether or not it does a good job receiving FM Broadcast stations (87 - 108 MHz). Not interested on high fidelity MX just good voice level reproduction. Any help appreciated. [IRCA] TP and TA emphasis
Obviously the designers and builders of the FSL antennas have done a remarkable job in pursuing the elusive "trans oceanic" stations using these unique antenna and ULR radios. The creativity, testing and research that that has been conducted by Gary and others is commendable. At times it seems like the IRCA list has few posters with interest in North American domestic medium wave dxing. I think there are many of us out there who maybe have little personal interest in Asian and European MW Dx stations and wish that similar antenna research efforts were also being directed toward improving domestic Dx abilities. In no way am I being critical of the efforts toward improving trans-oceanic DX or of those avidly following those developments. Perhaps I am just envious of the results and wish for similar progress using smaller antennas and radios for domestic DX!! [IRCA] Good post!
The recording about the Ham and UHF traffic following the big Bay Area quake in 1989 was really what listening is all about. i was listening when that event happened and it brought back memories. That particular post by Colin Newell and all the posts about the 1500 kHz anomaly are very informative - thanks! [IRCA] 1500 mystery signal
For what it is worth I would suggest that people simply report the bearings of maximum signals and stop reporting things as "null maximums". Simply report a direction for the *maximum signals ! *Of course (generally) when using a loop there usually be a second maximum point about 180 degrees away. I live in an RF rich area with a number of geographic obstructions so I often find the opposing maximum points will show slightly different signal levels and azimuths. Using consistent reporting should help those trying to triangulate the source for the mystery signals. Most of us know that the null points will be generally about 90 degrees away from the maximums. Obviously competing signal sources can distort this relationship. [IRCA] DXing stations not on the 10 kHz spacing
I live about 40 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and generally in the S.F. Bay area RF swamp of MW stations. On occasions I have been able to receive trans-Pacific stations that lie more or less halfway between local MW frequencies by using the narrowest SSB bandwidth on my R-75 which is about 2.4 kHz and selecting the sideband farthest from the more powerful signal. I have no room for a long beverage and am limited to a 100 ft "L" shaped random wire or a pair of 10 foot verticals I use with my Quantum Phaser. The the Phaser I can reduce local MWs dramatically. Any ideas or suggestions ?? [IRCA] Elad SDR question
Does anyone know if the Elad waterfall and signal strength display can display and record the *entire MW band* (530-1710 kHz) for a period of time specified using the system clock (unattended recording). Can the recorded signals then be listened to in SSB mode even if the original recording was done using AM? [IRCA] 540 kHz in Saskatchewan
After trying for this station in Watrous, Saskatchewan for a long time, I finally got it Oct 5, 2013 at 0330 Pacific time (1030 UTC), after KVIP in Northern California and the big Mexicans on 540 faded out. Distance from my SF Bay area is 1240 miles. Rx was a Winradio Excalibur and 95 foot random wire. After a few years that was a nice catch. _ Neil Bell, KJ6FBA ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] for mailing list: MW DXing
For one, I am still very interested in MW DXing. For me, the limiting factor is that there is no commercial availability of these new and exciting ferrite sleeve antennas. For those having the physical skills to make their own FSL antennas the fun and challenges are certainly there. In my case severe arthritis in my 80 year-old hands and wrists makes this task impossible. I hope that some enterprising person will set up a process where some of us could purchase a FSL antenna. Right now I am limited to loops like the Terk Advantage or the the Quantum loop. Outdoor choices like the large loops with masts and rotators are not possible for those living under homeowner or condo association restrictions. Health issues force to sell my Quantum Phaser and Quantum Loop 3.0. Both are in excellent shape. If interested email me direct at: neil.neilb...@gmail.com. [IRCA] Fairfield CA, strange station
Heard a station on 890 which identifies itself as KIRB, serving Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, CA. Couldn't find anything on a station with call letters of KIRB. My QTH is about 32 miles from the AFB and the signal is not very strong and was mixing with KDXU from Utah a 10 KW station about 465 miles from me. They were broadcasting a taped message about 1-2 minutes long - sort of like a TIS or HAR. Anyone else ever heard this one? [IRCA] Finally got KFIR, Oregon
As most MW DXers know there aren't a lot of stations on 720 kHz. One I have wanted for a while is KFIR in Sweet Home, Oregon, about 450 miles from my QTH. At night KDWN in Las Vegas, NV dominates the frequency with their 50 KW power, day and night. I decided to try for KFIR in the time after sunrise in Las Vegas and just after KFIR switched from their puny night power of 184 watts to their day power of 10 KW. Finally this morning about 0530 local time here in the SF bay area KFIR must have shifted to their 10 KW day power and I got reasonably good KFIR reception for about 15 minutes before propagation faded out. Daytime reception of KFIR isn't normally possible at this 450 mile distance. Finally logged it using my Excalibur SDR and Quantum Phaser with two random wires. Thank goodness for the grey-line effect!
