It would be QRN, not QRM.  Anyway, I have tried 2 LED lamps and they both wiped
out FM completely and messed up AM.  The expensive Sylvania was worse than the
WalMart Great Value.  CFL lamps bad, but not as bad.  CFL lampslast longest
burned base DOWN.  CFL lamps being instant start do VERY poorly with frequent
switching. Same as HF based linear fluorescents as well as magnetic instant
start.  Put them in an inclosed fixture and life will be substantially shorter.
I expect LED lamps in an inclosed fixture will also have a reduced life
expectancy as in an inclosed fixture there is heat. Heck, I found incandescent
lamps in an inclosed fixture had a reduced life.

My bedside radios now have incandescent lamps close in to read by.  I just
can't find a high enough lumen lamp for reading.. halogens get too hot. The
ones that rate the same as 60 watts are not bright enough.

Send it to C Crane and be done with it. This is your SECOND one?  Yes, Paul,
you HAVE dropped and DESTROYED radios before.  You need to be more careful.
Mine has that problem also. Yes, there is a serious design flaw with the
battery box on the ATS-909X.  Instead of using springs they used a "tab" to
make the batteries tight. This "tab" loses it's strength and then the batteries
don't  make contact anymore. I cut up a soft drink tab to make a shim.  I ought
to call Sangean and give them a hard time over the defect.

It is a VERY bad battery box design.   As for puking AA alkalizes, are you sure
you didn't cause a short circuit.  I, by the way, used a soft drink pull tab
that I trimmed up with wire snips.  That worts better than foil.

Jim,

I have had a lot of Caravans starting with the 89, then the 97, and now the
2014. Both the 89 & 97 had ignition noise on AM, but the radios were fairly
sensitive. This one is nothing to write home about regarding sensitivity. That
is one reason I was wondering if there is some adjustment to peak the antenna
like years ago. But with so much computer stuff today, there is probably some
chip and self adjusts, but I have no clue.

From: "Paul B. Walker, Jr." Nice job of
putting words in my mouth and assuming what I meant.

No, but this station needs some technical upgrades. (I heard the sign off
aircheck someone made, and it sounded horrible) That combined with monthly
operating costs and maintence make it a losing proposition.

Like WHAT?  Their main transmitter is a Harris DX-50.
I could often hear them before local sunset Chattanooga and they sounded good.

50kw AM's don't necessarily mean lots of money anymore. The station is
pretty directional and is in an over saturated radio market.

Over saturated?  If your format is country, otherwise you are full of it.

I could care less what theyre programming, doesn't bother me.  But the
power bill alone for 50kw day and 2500 watts night is several thousand a
month, minimum.. nevermind maintence and repairs there's already plenty
of religion, talk radio and music on the radio in Chattanooga.

and NONE of them show up in ratings.

Nostalgia... the old top 40 days, 5 watts on am don't pay the billd
anymore.. Alot of DX'ers don't seem to realize that nor do they understand
the business side of radio.

And sometimes YOU don't either.
ONLY one AM station showed up in ratings.  (Interesting that 2  HD-2s did. I
wonder if they were on a translator )
There are a lot of 50,000 watt AMs making money.  If you are a stand alone you
have to work HARD and have really good sales people. Modern day radio (both AM
and FM ) do not have many of this type person.  Even IF I were 40 again and had
expertise in sales as well as what I have now, i would not want the stress.
