[IRCA] 1590 KMIC Radio Aleluya

2015-01-24 Thread Stephen H. Ponder
First, thanks to all on the various lists that answered my query as to the
whereabouts of Houston's Radio Disney station - KMIC 1590. The info everybody
provided turned out to be spot on!

If you haven't heard by now, Houston has a new Hispanic Gospel station! Tune to
1590 kHz and you will hear "Radio Aleluya, 1590 KMIC." I downloaded the Aleluya
Broadcasting Network (ABN) app to my iPhone, but it doesn't have the KMIC
stream added to it yet.

One of the ABN webpages that has the coverage maps for their stations is
http://radioaleluya.org/

[IRCA] New Multi-Band Radio - Kaito KA268

2015-11-10 Thread Stephen H. Ponder
Has anybody seen the Kaito KA268 AM/FM/SW receiver that's discounted on Amazon?
It's described as a "12 Band World Receiver with AM/FM and 10 SW Bands 3.8 MHz
- 22 MHz."

Here's a summary description of the KA268:
- Telescopic antenna is 28 inches (71 cm) long with 7 segments. The antenna is
capable of rotating 360°.
- Radio has a "slide rule" dial (not digital).
- Right side of radio has a tuning knob (not a thumbwheel), a variable tone
knob, and a variable volume knob (not digital).
- Left side of radio has an On/Off slide switch, a 3.5 mm headphone jack that
delivers FM Stereo to the headphones/earbuds, and a DC In 6V jack (tip
negative).
- There is a flip-out kickstand on the back of the radio, as well as a very
small Time Zone map.
- Also on the back of the radio is a "Quick-Look" chart of the radio's
frequency coverage:

FM: 88 - 108 MHz
AM: 520 - 1710 kHz
SW1: 3.80MHz - 4.10MHz
SW2: 4.65MHz - 5.15MHz
SW3: 5.85MHz - 6.40MHz
SW4: 7.00MHz - 7.40MHz
SW5: 9.30MHz - 10.00MHz
SW6: 11.55MHz - 12.20MHz
SW7: 13.50MHz - 13.90MHz
SW8: 15.00MHZ - 15.70MHz
SW9: 17.45 MHz - 18.10MHz
SW10: 21.35MHz -22.00MHz

On the front of the radio in the upper left side of the radio's case are 3 LED
indicators. These LEDs are labeled "FM", " AM", and "Tuning". The FM LED
indicates that the radio is tuned to the FM Band. The AM LED indicates that the
radio is tuned to the AM Band, and the Tuning LED serves as a signal strength
indicator. The brighter the LED, the stronger the signal.

According to the Amazon review, the KA268 Noise Limited Sensitivity values are:

FM band < 10uV
AM band < 1mV/m
SW band < 30uV

The KA268 has a front-firing speaker that is 57 mm (2.24 inches) in diameter.

Even though the radio has a 6V DC jack, a 6VDC "wall wart" does not come with
the radio. The radio can be powered by 4 AA batteries, again not supplied with
the radio. The literature I have seen does not indicate that the batteries may
be charged inside the radio.

The KA268 is not a large radio. Again, according to Amazon, the radio's
dimensions are 6 3/4 x 4 1/2 x 1 1/8 inches (17.145 x 11.43 x 2.858 cm) and
weighs 11.9 ounces (337.36 grams).

Amazon is selling the KA268 for $19.95 with Prime 2-Day shipping. As Jerry
Clower, famous Baptist comedian once said, this radio "'done flung a craving on
me!!"

If anyone has experience with the KA268, please share with the group.

[IRCA] Question: Which Analog Sony SRF Walkman Would You Rate the Best ULR?

2014-02-28 Thread Stephen H. Ponder
This may seem to be a "Duh!" question to some in the group, but I'm curious as
to which of the various analog Sony SRF AM/FM Walkman radios would be
considered the "best."

I remember a post by Gary DeBock that identified six AM/FM Walkman radios that
utilized the CXA1129N "radio-on-a-chip" ...

1. SRF-29
2. SRF-39
3. SRF-39FP
4. SRF-49
5. SRF-59
6. SRF-S84

I have the SRF-59 and have to say that it is a hot radio for its size. I've
been pleasantly surprised by its sensitivity and selectivity, especially here
in Houston, TX.

My question is based on the fact that I don't have any other model with which
to compare the performance of my SRF-59.

I just ordered an SRF-29 on eBay tonight, based solely on Gary's email about it
containing the CXA1129N chip.

Is there a document or spreadsheet somewhere that compares the six radios
listed above?

Thanks for your help!!

[IRCA] CBS Sports Radio - KIKR-AM 1450 Beaumont, TX, and KBED-AM 1510 Nederland, TX

2014-03-02 Thread Stephen H. Ponder
While waiting for my wife to come out of the local HEB grocery store this
afternoon on our way home from morning worship, I decided to see what I could
hear on the radio in the Highlander.

While tuning through the upper segment of the band, I was surprised to hear a
strong station on 1450. Knowing that 1450 is a GY channel and that there is a
semi-local to my QTH on 1460 (KBRZ Missouri City, TX), I camped out on
frequency to learn more.

Turns out that the 1450 station is KIKR-AM in Beaumont, TX, which flipped from
Hispanic programming to CBS Sports Radio Format on April 1, 2013. They have a
sister station in the Golden Triangle - 1510 KBED-AM in Nederland, TX. Both
stations are part of the Cumulus Media group.

Here's a link to the article from the Orange Leaf newspaper explaining the
format change:

http://www.orangeleader.com/breakingnews/x1319119685/All-new-sports-stations-debuts-Monday

KBEB-1510 has a much weaker signal to my QTH (southeast Houston) than does
KIKR-1450, even though their antenna patterns, according to Radio-Locator.com,
look very similar.

Just wanted to add this info to the DX community.

[IRCA] Surprise DX on 1410!

2013-07-26 Thread Stephen H. Ponder
Sat down in the easy chair tonight to do some "catch-up" work on my job search
log, picked up my DT-400W to do some casual tuning around, and was quite
surprised to hear an ID from "Archangel Radio, 1410 WNGL" in Mobile, AL, as
they were heading into the "Live Hour" program at 9:00 PM CDT.

I had not heard this station before, so I did some quick research and found out
that before becoming WNGL, Catholic Radio for the Archdiocese of Mobile, AL,
the station had been WUNI from 1963 to 1984. I verified them in 1979 when I
lived in Charlotte, NC. They sent me a small "WUNI-Bird" lapel pin with my
verie!!

If you hear them, their website is www.wngl1410am.com

They also stream online via TuneIn at tunein.com/radio/WNGL-1410-s30845/

I also found a great link for digging into the history of Alabama broadcasters!
It's the Alabama Broadcast Media Page. The link is at:

[IRCA] Houston FM News - KUHF 88.7 FM Plans to Purchase Rice University FM Station KTRU 91.7 FM

2010-08-17 Thread Stephen H. Ponder
Heard this on KUHF's "All Things Considered" on the way home from work this
afternoon …

UH board considers plan to buy Rice radio station
School would be first in Texas with 2 channels
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/7156105.html

By JEANNIE KEVER, HOUSTON CHRONICLE

Aug. 17, 2010, 1:39PM

The University of Houston board today approved the purchase of the
radio station operated by students at Rice University for almost 40 years in
a $9.5 million deal that would give UH the broadcast tower, FM frequency and
license used by Rice's KTRU.

UH's regents voted 5-3 in favor of authorizing Chancellor Renu
Khator authority to complete the deal. Rice spokesman B.J. Almond said its
trustees already have given similar authority to administrators there.

UH currently operates one public radio station, KUHF, which offers
both news and classical music and other arts programming.

If the deal goes through, the university would have two stations,
one to provide news 24 hours a day and the second to offer classical music
and arts coverage, according to a fact sheet prepared by the school to
explain the plan.

KUHF would be converted to a 24-hour news and information format,
heard at the station's current frequency, 88.7 FM.

The new station, to be known by call letters KUHC, would broadcast
classical music and arts on the 91.7 FM frequency used by KTRU.

Both stations will be affiliates of National Public Radio, as KUHF
currently is, UH spokesman Richard Bonnin said Monday.

They will share one staff and be run out of offices on the UH
campus.

KTRU, which offers an eclectic mix of music along with broadcasts of
some Rice athletics, would remain available through its website, ktru.org
 .

No timeline for the transition was available Monday.

More power than needed

In response to a question from the Chronicle, Rice released a
statement Monday saying it decided to sell the tower, license and broadcast
frequency because the 50,000-watt station is far more powerful than needed
to reach its audience, which it said is too small to be measured by the
radio research firm Arbitron.

The money will be used for campus improvements, including a new food
service venture. A student committee will help determine how to use the rest
of the money.

Classes at Rice begin next Monday, and students are returning to
campus this week.

On its website, KTRU describes itself as "a free-form, eclectic
radio station that thinks it's a bad thing to play the same song twice in a
span of an hour."

But much of the programming is automated, not live.

Audience of 800,000?

UH officials said KUHF will raise the $9.5 million purchase price
through private fundraising and increased underwriting and that no state or
tuition funds will be used.

Bonnin said predictions call for the two stations to have an
audience of 800,000 within a few years, more than double KUHF's current
audience of 380,000.

Several other universities operate two public radio stations,
including Purdue University, Florida State University, Ohio State University
and the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

UH would be the first in Texas to do so.

Khator described the plan as helping to fulfill the university's
responsibility to the city by promoting both its arts community and
expanding access to news and information.

"The acquisition of a second public radio station delivers on our
promise to keep the University of Houston at the forefront of creating
strong cultural, educational and artistic opportunities,“ the UH chancellor
said in a statement.

Bonnin said that no one at KUHF was available Monday to talk about
the move. But he provided a statement that said the station will increase
Houston-centered content on key topics and will sponsor and broadcast
town-hall forums on issues of community concern.

KUHC Classical will offer more in-studio live performances, live
remote broadcasts and full-length concert broadcasts of local performers
than KUHF currently offers, according to the plans.

jeannie.ke...@chron.com

So, KUHF 88.7 FM already has 3 HD channels - Classical Music, News (NPR,
BBC, and Deutsche Welle), and Radio Netherlands Spanish. They are not
strictly limited to distinct HD channels - for example, during AM/PM drive
times, News may be on HD-1 and Classical may be on HD-2. At other times of
the day, Classical is on HD-1 and News is on HD-2.

What impact will the purchase of KTRU's facilities have, other than giving
KUHF a dedicated 24/7 Classical Music outlet, leaving KUHF for News
Programming. Will they drop their HD channels?

Personally, I'd love to see them add more English-language news programming
on their HD channels - like CBC Radio, Radio Australia, and Radio Japan.

Just arrived home from the hospital.
The procedure went well and they found NO issues with my heart!! Once I get
over what has made me weak for a week, I can return to normal life.
I can now plan to be in Rochester for the NRC convention... etc.

Much thanks to those folks that emailed me and sent prayers and positive
thoughts my way. I'm certain they helped.

I should be back to normal (for me that is) within a day or so, just in time
for our daughter's wedding on Saturday

2010-10-16 Thread Stephen H. Ponder
Not heard here in southeast Houston, either. All I heard was dominant
Houston located KMIC-1590 (Disney) and KGAS-1590 in Carthage, TX, running
late-night football scores for the Ark-La-Tex (Arkansas-Louisiana-Texas)
area. There was another station in the jumble, most likely an XE, quite
possibly XEACH from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.
