[IRCA] S. AZ TPs, Sunday 5/26
Ndblist's monthly CLE (coordinated listening event) is this weekend. I got up early past two mornings to try to get some Pacific beacons but conditions have been very poor. Since the 530 Adak Alaska NDB (ADK ident) came back on about a month ago after years of being off, it's a good signal when conditions are decent. I haven't heard it yet this weekend, but did get two TP MW AMBC briefly this morning. 774 Japan occasional very poor talk 1145 utc; 828 Japan with a brief fadeup with woman talking, poor level, 1149 utc. 657 and 1135 with good hets. Re: [IRCA] Monday night LWBC, S. AZ
I have a 700' N/S longwire and a 900' E/W longwire that are my primary antennas. I get more local AC noise on the E/W wire and even though most LWBC is stronger on the E/W, the N/S wire has less noise and better overall S/N. When I lived in northeast Oregon I also had longwire antennas and would get LWBC; being much farther south here in AZ I never really expected to get much, and have been very pleased with what's been heard, especially this season. Several instances of 252 Algeria at "armchair copy" in AM sync mode, where normally the NDBs cause strong hets from the carriers, and the NDB idents themselves create "interference". Last night, Thursday, had the best reception of 252 Algeria that I've probably ever had. Several times it was strong enough to totally capture the frequency. Usually there is "qrm" from NDBs but on peaks it was the only thing heard, and I could use AM Sync. Over the evening I also had reception from 171, 183, 189, 198, 216. I also heard four NDBs from Greenland. Quite an unusual evening for far-north LF reception. Re: [IRCA] Antenna rotors for magnetic loops (W6LVP loop)
I realize Mark (or anyone else) never asked, but I've done extensive experiments with the W6LVP loop and preamp. It is poor for MW and only starts to do well at HF. Due to its high input impedance it does not match the single-turn loop until up at HF. If your interest is primarily MW I do not recommend the W6LVP setup. (I've done the same for the newer MFJ 1886 loop and preamp and that one is even worse--it doesn't even have decent gain at MW.) 73, Steve AA7U On 12/16/2018 9:34 AM, Mark Pettifor wrote: I don't see any recent discussions about antenna rotors in my searches. Re: [IRCA] BOG question
The John Bryant article on "over the shoulder" can be found at: <http://www.dxing.info/equipment/over_your_shoulder_bryant.dx> He does not test BOGs in his article, though. As a probably unrelated note, when I lived at the rural place in Oregon I had a 1600' E/W unterminated longwire that received "over the shoulder" in the west direction. That was the only implementation I could construct. My main interest was Pacific LF NDBs (from the west), thus everything was "over the shoulder". I routinely received faint Pacific NDBs with that setup and it was the very best Pacific LF antenna I've ever had the pleasure of using. Of course I had nothing I could compare with a regular west-pointed antenna of comparable length so I'll never know how much better such an antenna might have been. 73, Steve AA7U On 11/7/2018 5:29 PM, Chuck Hutton wrote: Nick - Hoping I remember all the details correctly as I don't have time right now to re-read things Luis has put this data on the web before and claimed "resonance". I see no reference to Beverage's work so assume Luis did not explore that area. I saw no numbers to serve as a basis for "resonance" - some L and C values would be helpful. But we stray from the original question : how much loss is there in a non-terminated BOG / Beverage? Some have compared "over the shoulder" versus normal wires, including John Bryant. Assuming I recall correctly, he found that over the shoulder had some feasibility as the loss was some 5 to 10 dB. Re: [IRCA] KAZ versus Pennant/Flag
Here's my (trivial) contribution. I'm mostly an LF NDB DXer and love to hear any Pacific beacons. I had room for a DKAZ and hadn't heard about the superiorities of longer horizontal length so put up the standard 140' DKAZ. Due to critters around, primarily javelina who will tear down anything in their path, my bottom horizontal wire lies on the ground. The ground in this S. AZ desert is mostly a thin layer of soil with rock underneath. My DKAZ points west and I use a Wellbrook FLG100LN preamp. I use a fixed 1200 ohm termination resistor and have not spent any time trying to optimize it. Experiments indicated the Wellbrook preamp was noticeably quieter for noise pickup than a matching transformer at the DKAZ and a preamp in the shack. I run about 550 feet of RG6 coax from DKAZ to shack--trying to get the DKAZ as much out of the fairly high local AC noise environment as possible. I also have a 900' E/W longwire which gives somewhat stronger LF Pacifics than the DKAZ however the east pickup deteriorates the S/N ratio such that the DKAZ even though somewhat lower level is almost always noticeably better S/N ratio on LF signals and is almost always clearly superior to the E/W longwire for Pacifics. I have not so far found a western LF signal that the E/W wire heard that couldn't also be heard on the DKAZ. Folks may have found the DKAZ is lower output the lower you go in frequency, but for my uses it is definitely not suffering from lack of LF performance, again when used with the FLG100LN preamp. I also try occasionally (if I'm determined to get up early enough) for MW Pacific signals, and the DKAZ is even better than the E/W longwire all over the whole MW band. At the top of the band, 1566 HLAZ is always better on the DKAZ, for instance. On times when DU expanded-band signals are heard, the DKAZ hears them when the longwire usually has no trace of them. Especially for a permanent installation, it's a major job to erect a DKAZ; perhaps some day I'll see about possibly extending it to 160' horizontal or maybe longer if there's room. A lot of extra brush would need clearing, etc. A major job! But the current basic 140' DKAZ is working superbly for me for both western LF and MW reception. 73, Steve AA7U near Sahuarita, AZ On 10/24/2018 10:42 AM, Chuck Hutton wrote: Mark - No arrogance detected here. Yes, I have to confess that I don’t have a dedicated radio closet. Maybe our next house, says he who has lived with his wife and family in this house for the past 30 years, ha!! Anyway, in that tote was a Sangean SG-711L! Officially, the radio is described as an “FM/MW/LW/SW 1-9 12 Band Portable Receiver.” I purchased it on eBay many years ago from a seller in Argentina. It still has the Argentinian Customs stamp affixed to the back of the radio. I haven’t seen any mentions of this radio in any of the club journals in quite some time, probably due to its age. Re: [IRCA] Where's the Korean Jammer When You Need It?
With my newly repaired Perseus SDR back in operation I've been recording in the morning while listening live on the R75. Checking the recording, 657 kHz at 1300 utc I have the same "C sharp" note TOH chime that Gary's (much better) recording has. I can barely hear just the chime, not any pips. Re: [IRCA] CO TP Report 9/27/18 (Drake vs Elad)
I sent my reply to Nick but maybe others might be interested. The Drake PIN diode deterioration is not my opinion; Drake has mentioned this in tech articles in the distant past, where I first learned about it. Steve On 9/27/2018 10:48 AM, STEVE wrote: I'm mostly familiar with the Drake R8 series, having worked on two R8Bs, converting them to true VLF-HF reception instead of the no-sensitivity below about 130 kHz. Drake also used 200 ohm input switched band filters, with transformers to convert from 50 to 200 ohms, and the reverse on the output of the filters. Those diodes are associated with that and possibly are more sensitive to deterioration at the higher impedance than where PIN diodes are usually used in 50 ohm systems. Re: [IRCA] Loop comparisons / suggestions
In addition to the loops already mentioned, there's the MFJ 1888 broadband amplified loop. I bought one some time back mainly just to see how well it worked at LF, which is my primary use for receive-only amplified loops. The MFJ loop does not work at LF despite the typographical claim in the ads in QST magazine claiming "reception to 50 kHz" operation. In fact it loses gain even at the lower part of the AMBC band. It works OK at HF though still has less gain than the Wellbrook. Note too the W6LVP broadband amplified loop does not work at LF either, despite their claims, compared to the Wellbrook and RF Pro loops. 73, Steve AA7U On 8/26/2018 7:36 AM, Russ Johnson wrote: Good Morning, I will likely be purchasing a magnetic loop this fall. As we drove up in total darkness at 1140 the "sleeping squatters" were once again out in force, so we needed to split up into two groups-- Craig and I at Rockwork 6, and Tom and Nick at Rockwork 4. When the first FSL was set up on 531 kHz in total darkness at 1155 UTC there was already an S9+ signal from 531-PI, which astonished all of us. This was exactly the same situation as in July of 2014, during the NZ-record (88 Kiwis) DXpedition with Chuck. This morning's session was every bit as good as during the Kiwi Record trip-- if not better. Every NZ station I tried for showed up, and the other three DXers seemed swamped with choice DX all over the band. [IRCA] S. AZ TPs, November 29--poor + another NK jammer heard
Poor conditions this morning, only a couple with audio. I heard another North Korean jammer on 1476 that I haven't heard before (only on 1566). Chris Kadlec's information posted 11/22 doesn't mention this one. The 1476 jammer is the same type of approx. 35 Hz fundamental audio tone with harmonics like the 1566 jammer (which was also heard poorly this morning) that is easily heard in CW mode (when normally tuning for 9 kHz hets). Chris mentioned one on 1467 which I haven't heard so far.
