Re: [IRCA] 820 Tampa HD Gone. Good riddance, bad cess; 21 0144Z OCT 08; PVZ

2008-10-21 Thread Thomas L Jones
Yes HD radio no good.
HDTV looks nice but BAD implementation. What else do you expect from the
FCC & others in Washington ?

Today I go for a new job to keep me off the streets & out of the
gin mills. After 35+ years of fixing TV's & other such things I will be
paid to
junk them. Pallet after pallet of TV's piled to eye level. Must be
500 of them & more come in every day. Then there is the other
electronics to junk. Most still work or easily repairable. Many
very new, even quite a few HD's. Biggest waste in US history.
When the bill comes in for my Mass. master tech. licence
I wont be paying it, its useless now. Think I will send it
to the " Good ole days museum" if there is one.

Re: [IRCA] OT Remote control

2008-09-01 Thread Thomas L Jones
Patrick
Sounds like what you have is a tact switch ( tactile ).
The good news is they have gone into almost anything electronic
for over 20+ years. Must have made a billion of em by now.
The bad news is there are many styles.
If you are lucky you may find an old fashioned TV shop
with a junk pile but they are all but gone. There are a few very common
ones used in most things.
I used to see assortments in catalogues years ago, you
may check some of the TV-VCR parts houses. When looking
check the following..
through hole or surface mount
pin layout & case style
case height
button height
Dont expect much help from parts wholesalers the
profit is pennies each.
Good luck

Re: [IRCA] iPhones and IBOC

That makes me want to reach for a bottle of Gerotol.
Hoperfully
we will get 10 yrs of the "real" oldies first ( 1950-1962 ) before that.
Dont see much of a future in MYL type stations with that generation
sadly dropping like flys.
As far as IBOC goes it must be all but dead. How many AM's
are
getting conned into it lately ? A bad dream almost over.

Re: [IRCA] OT TV converter boxes

2008-05-30 Thread Thomas L Jones
I had a Samsung box at home & got nothing. I have 2
strong NTSCer's and a ton of weak but watchables. From what I
have seen with new Sony TV's is you do need a decent signal for
stable pix. Stations 60 + miles away will not come in unless
you are on a hill & have a rotor & good antenna. Ears will work
25 miles away but you get break-ups often on some stations.
One thing many customers dont grasp is to use the
parallel UHF channels to find a signal the auto program misses.
In other words if you want WBZ ch 4 Boston HD you would
enter 30.1 then fiddle & wait ( often many times ) If you get it add it
to
your list of channels to scan.
On the Rat Shack boxes we have been getting calls that
they cant get them to work. Never checked one out, they
just returned them not wanting to gamble a service call
for us to prove what was wrong.

Re: [IRCA] OT (Off-Topic) Question on TV Brand Reliability

2008-05-08 Thread Thomas L Jones
I have been in TV sales & service since 1971 I wouldnt touch it
with a 3 foot #8 nutdriver
Also if he has cable no need to upgrade anyways, wont see a difference.
I recomend all looking at new TV's read this artical.
Its a new ball game now. No more cheap repairs IF you can get the
parts EVEN for a brand name set. Get the extended warranty
from the manufacturer ( cheaper than the stores ) that way you
are good for 5 yrs.
