agreement with KIRN, the Farsi language station near LA, whereby they (KBOI)
would suck in some of their southward-bound signal. I have logged KIRN here
at night and would anticipate that with their northbound day pattern, I will
be able to log KMZQ through KBOI some around LSS when reception to the south

Re: [IRCA] Banff Trip

2008-06-23 Thread Tim Hall
I have a bandscan from Waterton too (1999) so I'll try to dig that one up.
It was an interesting place to visit, with all the very large, healthy
bighorn sheep roaming the streets of town. Couldn't enjoy the scenery too
much due to overcast and fog. The AM TIS stations in Waterton and Banff are
long gone; when I was at Waterton, they had merely covered up the
frequencies on the old signs.
Of the places I've stayed in Alberta so far, I definitely like Jasper best.
Pretty good DX and tons of wildlife.

I stayed in Lake Louise a few times and liked the conditions there with my
old Radio West Loop in 1988. I have also stayed in Banff and Johnston
Canyon. I prefer Johnston Canyon. It's between the two towns, on the old
highway (where all the wildlife hangs around), and very convenient if you're
going to visit this area. There is less risk of encountering electrical
noise there, and you probably won't get so much of the hotel room effect
of sharply-attenuated signals in the wooden cabins there.

If you can carve out a few days to visit Jasper it is well worth it. All
the old AM TIS stations are long-gone, but I understand from a 2005 visit
that Columbia Icefields has been thinking about resurrecting theirs.

existent unless you have an exceptionally long wire or antenna.

You may hear the likes of some South Americans, Mexico etc but thats about
it for any foreign signals on AM without the larger arrays. I've Dxed
myself around the Banff and Jasper areas and seem to find the same results
as mentioned prior. I think i'm spoiled living here now !!!

If you get the chance while visiting Alberta and have the time , consider
visiting Waterton Park in the southwest corner of the province. That's my

  on FM or on
a portable TV. As a kid (in the 70's), I heard of a
  DX'er who drove up
Mount Mitchell in NC. He had stations on every TV channel
  well up into
  the upper UHF band.

Fast forward to 1989. I was vacationing out in Colorado

Pikes Peak. I got out an old 5 portable TV set that
  I brought along
just to see if I could replicate the North Carolina
  DX'ers feat. Man!
Every channel from 2 to way up in the 50's had
  *something. Colorado,
Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Panhandles of TX and OK and NM,
  too, IIRC.
There was no tropo to speak of and no Es. I was not even
  at the summit!
FM stations out to 150 miles with no apparent tropospheric
  enhancement.
The signals did drop as I went lower.

That may be fun for you to try.

This thread reminds me of the DJs at a Louisville(?) radio station some
years ago who lampooned the town of Boonville, Indiana to the tune of One

Not much to do and even less to see...

Speaking of inland CA stations, it has been nice to hear KFBK middays the
past few days. Occasionally in December the Phoenix area stations at the
top of the dial (KFNN, KASA, KMIK) will come blasting in middays too, but
not yet this year...

I heard this one today too - quite strong at times, but it's some of

The call letters do sound like WDFS831, or maybe WDFX831, and I hear
kiloHertz and highway advisory radio, but it's generally pretty

I also heard one of the NY Thruway stations I've heard before,

WHLN, 1410, Harlan, KY, 11/13/07, 08:00 pm EST

Re: [IRCA] Cheater term and the FCC

2007-09-24 Thread Tim Hall
What an intriguing thought!

Now, if you wanted to achieve the same effect without breaking any rules,
you could all switch formats to overmodulated Sinaloan tuba music for one
night and create almost the same amount of adjacent-channel havoc that your
pushy IBOC neighbors are inflicting on you! That might not have enough
treble, though... perhaps an all-Yoko Ono format would be a more accurate
match for the musical contours of IBOC hash.

Come to think of it, maybe we should ask Jim to start using recordings of
IBOC hash in our DX tests, since it seems to plow through everything else on
the channel! ;)

OK, I'll stop now. I clearly need some sleep...

73, Tim

P.S. Just to keep this DX related - no change in the nighttime IBOC picture
from San Diego last night - only KOGO-600, KNX-1070, and KMIK-1580 were
noted.

see a massive one night cheat to protest night IBOC. All non-IBOC

It's one of those what if we all stopped paying our taxes for a year

Re: [IRCA] Cheater term and the FCC

2007-09-22 Thread Tim Hall
Good discussion.

I think the glitches that happen and only last a night or two are kind of
fun - mini-DX tests really. As long as the station figures it out (or reads
it here) and corrects the problem, no foul. I'm not perfect either (no
matter what everyone says, LOL). These short-term accidents will never come
close to matching the interference that IBOC will produce night after night.

I try to save the C word for stations that are brazen about it, like KILE
Bellaire, TX (Houston suburb). When I was in Houston for a week in 2004,
they were selling brokered programs at least 4 hours after sunset each night
(no accident there!) and leaving their carrier on all night to boot. It's
disappointing that they were recently rewarded with a CP for legitimate
night operation.

I personally like the HS FB rule - it's one of the few times we get to
hear programming that actually serves the community. Talk radio and snake
oil salesmen don't meet that description.

Very good comments. But both the IRCA NRC lists are indeed Googled. 10

broadcasting lists per several engineers I know. They see and read all
about us and what we hear and report. That is another reason I try to
keep away from terms that would be offensive to radio stations.

Well, never having bothered to look, I didn't know that. Not that it
 makes
a whit of difference to me. If someone takes offense to what I've
 written,
I'm perfectly happy to debate the point. I'm sure my dislike of IBOC has
gathered me no fans. But, until they come up with something that doesn't
trash the neighbors, and actually covers as well as analog, then I won't
budge. I put it as a parallel to a neighbor with a loud stereo that
intrudes into your house and disrupts your life. Why stations actually
 put
up with that is quite beyond me. I truly applaud people like Bob Savage
 who
speak up to try to save their own skins.

We seem to have a certain amount of CEs in this day that know all
about DXIng and most are active Hams. Yet they refuse to QSL reports. I
would think the CEs that are Hams would be more than happy to QSL, but
they don't. A far cry from 40 years ago, which is sad to see.
One CE told me that he would QSL, but only his Ham station. Strange.

A QSL is always a favor, and not anything required. It's their
 choice. If
they wanted to QSL reports only coming from people whose last name began
with M, then there isn't a bloody thing to be done for it. Years ago
 there
were at least several engineers per station, even low power daytimers.
Today there are several stations per engineer. I have close to a dozen
stations for whom I do work or consult. Add the increasing demands of
 life
in general, and there's not a whole lot of time left. I don't think I've
asked for a QSL for many years, not even for tests. Heck, I really don't
even keep a formal log any more. Haven't done that for a couple of
 decades.
However, I remember what I've heard, and that's good enough for me. There
is no need for me to bug someone to verify what I already know. Other
people derive great pleasure from QSLs, so more power to them. It's how
 you
 want to do the hobby.

I have to wonder how many engineers have realized that someone is on to
their cheating by reading these lists. And how many of them have been
 saved
a visit from the FCC because we have served as an early warning system for
them. From that perspective, they owe us. Anyone remember any station
written about in here as a cheater or as broken and then having them go
 back
to correct operation? If so, here's something for them: You're Welcome!

Disappointing, on many fronts...and one wonders how much worse it might
 get in, say, mid-December.

 s

That's to put it mildly. The answer is a LOT worse. NOW I HAVE NO
RELIABLE NIGHT SIGNALS TO LISTEN TO. I DO NOT have ANY primary or secondary
night service in Silverstreet, not even groundwave thatt I can use. WKDK
after dark is audible but not listenable (for music) So I am pissed to say
the least. I USED to listen to Coast to Coast before I went to sleep. NOT
anymore. WLAC sounds like a vaccum cleaner is run by my head. Where the
ICF-2010 sits it can't be moved to ATTEMPT to null WTWP. As for FM, the
system is obsolete. Data rate is too low. 1% power is way too low. Then
there was talk of raising power to 2%. Now there's talk of 10%. That means
replacing the transmitters. 2% power is doable at some sites. When you get
into the 10% range there WILL be interference. But down here anyone who is
using secondariesit's the same old crap they have elsewhere. WFBC is
running comedy. It sounds worse than a SHAKY 24,000 baud dial up. WCOS has
 the
same artist / song in the display. It's been that way for days on end.
This is on the HD2. They are running a semi form of classic country but not
the really old good hits. The only thing the HD radio is for is listening to
an adjacent that carries something I want to hearwellused to .
the Braves on Clemson's 104.9. HD at 10% will take care of that. It
surely isn't good for decoding on a reliable basis ONE station and if I want
to hear more I need a tower and rotor and an APS-13. maybe.

More ranting and venting to come later.

Re: [IRCA] First impressions of 24h IBOC

Here in San Diego I only noted severe hiss from KFBK completely
covering 1520 and 1540 in the pre-sunrise hours. Other than that,
conditions were better than normal last night. Our only local i-BLOCker,
KOGO-600, is not running IBOC at night yet.

I suppose from now on we should call these stations by their true frequency
ranges, e.g., KOGO-590/600/610; KFBK-1520/1530/1540. Maybe we should count
'em in our totals 3 times too ;)

Re: [IRCA] SOS in Morse code on the radio today

2007-07-31 Thread Tim Hall
Interesting - It's kind of surprising that their advertising department got
the Morse code right. That's pretty good attention to detail for marketing
folks :)

This reminds me of something that happened a few years ago. There was a DX
test on the east coast or maybe the midwest, on a fairly crowded channel. A
station much closer to me on the same channel ran a commercial including
some Morse code which just happened to include 3 out of the 4 letters (in
sequence) from the testing station's call letters. I thought we might see

[IRCA] San Diego/Tijuana update

2007-07-08 Thread Tim Hall
The 620 station is XESS, nominally licensed to Ensenada but clearly
operating as a Tijuana station. During the day they get winged by KOGO's
IBOC.

I don't listen to XEC-1310 very often. I think they might still play some
NOS at times, but maybe not oldies anymore. I think I mostly hear talk on
that station these days but I'm not 100% sure about that.

I forgot to mention that XESURF-540 seems to be running locally these days,
at least at times. I hear them using the slogan San Diego's 5-40 country,
the zoo.

I've also noticed KBLU getting out less to the E and W in recent years...
yet they and the other Mexicali/San Luis/Yuma stations are generally still
quite strong in Palm Springs.

Hi Tim, first off, do you know the call sign of the 620 in tijuana?
When I was in the imperial valley, I could barely get them in the day,
but I did get stations from rio colorado San Luis in the day time, at
 1080, x e y d, at 1460, which if you weren't careful, would throw you
 for a local, but it wasn't, it was x e b c, 10,000 watts at 1460, at
 1260, x e m w, and if you listened hard on 1260, you could hear 1350's
signal in there on 1260, so I bet 1260 and 1350 are sharing towers, and
lastly, the stereotypical horrible sounding spanish station at 1520, x
 e a h, at 1520 with 1000 watts, only broadcasting 12 hours a day, but
they have no highs and were all distorted, calling themself raudio
exitos. That, plus a faint glimmer of k f m b, and a tiny bit of kcbq
were all I could hear in the day, except for k b l u in Yuma at 560
which I thought would be a lot stronger, but it wasn't. Also, what is
the 1310 doing these days? The last I knew, in the nineties, it was
raudio insiso, and at night, they would play English oldies, with
 Spanish commercials.

XEXX-1420 is running a mix of Radio Formula talk and brokered time

English, sounds very old. He has various guests in the studio and
 stops

I just returned from the east coast (SC/NC/VA/MD/PA/NY/ON/QC/VT/NH/MA) and

As Art Blair has notified some of you, we received the startling news of
the passing of Bob Pietsch yesterday (Thu. May 3, 2007). Bob's wife,
Maria, sent me an e-mail yesterday evening but unfortunately I was not
at home last night and did not read my e-mails until a few minutes ago.

Bob notified me several weeks ago that he had a recurrence of Cancer
(type unspecified) and was to begin treatments again. He had
successfully fought off one bout of Cancer several years ago. He told
me this was a different type of Cancer and asked me not to tell anyone.
I received an e-mail from Maria a few days ago that Bob was in the
hospital as he had an adverse reaction to some of the drugs he was now
taking. Apparently Bob's body could not adapt or recover from this
 treatment.

Bob I go back a long long way. He was one of the first dxers I met
when I resumed the hobby in California in the mid 60s. We started the
well known ERBA (El Rancho Bar/Beverage Association) and attended
several conventions together as well as many personal visits. Bob was a
lifetime member of IRCA. I'm not positive of his age but I'd guess
about 65/66. He Maria were married not long before Eloise I said
our vows in 1976. They have two adult children, Bryan Tracy.

We will miss our buddy tremendously. Maria asked that I notify the dx
clubs. When I am able to talk with her I will see whether she will
authorize giving out her e-mail address should anyone wish to
 correspondence personally with her.

I have to stop. My tears are interfering with my typing.

Re: [IRCA] IBOC Hash trashes KSL

2007-04-09 Thread Tim Hall
Well said...

For what it's worth, here in San Diego, we have two stations very close
together: KOGO-600 running IBOC, and XESS-620, the fraudulent Tijuana
station which pretends to be in Ensenada, not running IBOC. KOGO's daytime
IBOC hash is enough to put a nasty squeal on top of XESS' signal on 620. It
will be interesting to see what happens when two or more legitimate stations
start interfering with each other...

Although I'm prepared for the worst (a total AM apocalypse which renders the
band useless for DXing, even in remote areas like national parks), I
cautiously expect the actual outcome will be at least a little less horrible
than that...

  Crew,

Back before I was assigned to VOA Delano, I used to compile and publish
  (via
DX/SDXM) the Directory on the SUBJECT line above.

I'm proposing to revive that and run it, say, monthly. It would include
  URLs,
but NOT telephone numbers (unless there's enough demand for such).

  Here's a sample entry:

  TAYLOR, Charles A. Grifton, NC
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Nothing much. Just name, bare-bones QTH, and e-mail address and URL.

Reason I think it's useful, is that you wouldn't have to dig through
 past
  DXMs
to find an address. And you'd also know where a fellow IRCAer lives.

I was aggressive before, and if someone didn't volunteer that info, I'd
e-mail the member in question and ask permission.

  Thoughts, anyone?

2007-03-20 Thread Tim Hall
Hi Willis,

KRLD-1080 does make it into San Diego at times, though the slop from
KNX-1070 and XEPRS-1090 is formidable. KSCO is a bit more common but KRLD
is quite often there. We also have a station in San Luis Rio Colorado,
Sonora that is noted occasionally.

WWL, WBAP, and WOAI were all nightly visitors on my clock radio in Virginia
in the 1970s. I used to listen to the Chuck Wagon Gang, and ghost trucker
songs, etc., on WWL each night. Good memories...

Re: [IRCA] Format Announced for KTRB-860 San Francisco, California

2007-02-27 Thread Tim Hall
Talk with just about any adjective in front of it is pretty awful. Even
sports talk, because there are too many networks and the talent has been
diluted. The toughest part of DXing these days is sitting through 59
minutes of tripe to get an ID (if they remember to include one - good
luck if it's ESPN).

It has been said that given an infinite amount of time, an infinite number
of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters would eventually reproduce

Re: [IRCA] Format Announced for KTRB-860 San Francisco, California

2007-02-27 Thread Tim Hall
I set mine to :58-:01 and :04-:07 since some stations ID or (at least back
east) give local weather after the news. I sometimes have to sit through
some pathetic promos (especially on Coast-to-Coast and ESPN stations)
between :58 and :00, but these settings work pretty well and give me a
little margin for error in case the timer doesn't keep perfect time. I
mainly DX on vacation, so I hook this up to a cassette recorder and it uses
42 minutes out of a 45 minute tape overnight. 73, Tim

[IRCA] XESS-620 / XESDD-920 / XESDD-1030

2007-02-24 Thread Tim Hall
Update on the legitimate Ensenada/Tecate stations and their
not-so-legitimate Tijuana doubles:

The legitimate station XESDD-920 appears to be off. I can't tell about the
other two legitimate stations XESS-1450 or XHBCE-92.1 FM as I don't hear
them regularly from Chula Vista.

The not-so-legitimate XESDD-1030 is still running music which I think could
still be described as Mexican oldies, though I do hear some news in the
mornings. The signal is currently very weak and (I would guess)
undermodulated (the carrier is fairly solid but the music is barely
audible). KURS-1040 is louder despite being a few miles farther away and
(allegedly!) much lower power.

I just noticed not-so-legitimate XESS-620 is running classic rock (last song
was I've Been Waiting for a Girl Like You) and using the slogan Radio
Fiesta after their call-letter IDs. I believe they were still ESPN
Deportes at the beginning of the week. I don't know if the current
programming is a full-time format change or just a weekend program.

No changes noted for XEPE-1700 or XEBCE-105.7.

times over UNID ESPN station (probably Tucson) with sweep tones and fast
code IDs VVV DE KRSN KRSN etc. Noted again around 0306 and 0309 but
strongest at 0303 (when the recorder jack on my '2010 shorted out and ruined

Re: [IRCA] Cruise dx'ing???

2007-01-23 Thread Tim Hall
I have DXed twice from cruise ships and loved it.

Over New Years 1990-1991, we sailed from LA to Puerto Vallarta. I
took my Sony ICF2010 and Radio West Loop. Reception was fantastic. I
remember getting armchair copy of WSB from the west coast of Mexico
plus a handful of GYDX records that stand to this day.

In September 2003, we cruised from Seattle to Juneau (one way) on a
sternwheeler. I took my ICF2010 with me, and shipped my big Kiwa Loop
to the cruise ship (for the trip home, I stopped at the post office in
Juneau and mailed it back to my house). Reception was great after
midnight (this was a small ship, and there was a really nice lounge on
the top deck at the stern of the boat, which had canvas walls with
plastic windows - enough to shield me from the elements without
interfering with the DX at all). I remember hearing good signals from
XECU-1450 and KVNS-1700 on the way to Skagway. I think I set 41 GYDX
records on that trip.

For recording, you might want to get one of those inexpensive digital
recorders (I have an RCA that cost about $39 about 2 years ago).
They're worthless in the low-fidelity mode but quite serviceable in
the high-fidelity mode (I get about 2 1/2 hours on my little recorder,
usually enough to record ToH IDs and tape loops from the TIS stations
I encounter). I keep this recorder with me on car trips. I find I
can get decent recordings of TIS stations while I'm driving, just by
holding the recorder near the car speaker. That reminds me, I have
about 50 TIS recordings I still need to extract and post to my web
page.

I would expect you would have fascinating reception from the
mid-Atlantic. I stayed on the Atlantic coast of Barbados in 1986 and
had a great time listening to S America in the evenings, N America
after midnight, Europe at sunrise and sunset, and the occasional
African.

Enjoy!

antenna will be the Sony's built-in antennas and the longwire (reel out) that

[IRCA] Finally logged KDJQ-890

for Storage Condos in Boise/Treasure Valley (www.storagecondos.com)
and a jeweler in Nampa. Jingle sounded like 89 (or 8-90?) DJQ.
Pretty fair signal at times, on top of normally-dominant KDXU and

My other frustrating sunset target is KRML-1410 Carmel, CA. I often
hear jazz programming on 1410 around 4pm but can never get an ID out

Several family AM radio stations including my local KECR-910 run
Spanish programming in the early morning hours. I think I've heard
Asian languages on KEBR-1210 before, but I'm not 100% sure...

Thanks for your help and comments. Sorry for the slow reply as I'm
currently running DX'er hours 3pm to 8am, hi.

What I heard was on 1210. I don't hear this type of programming often, so
it stands out. Knowing that KYAA, Soquel in CA. runs this sort of
programming made me double check my frequency. I actually, temporarily
forgot about CJRJ, but it's on 1200 also, having logged them in November.
 Logical reasoninings.

As far as Family Radio, Paul, I'm sure (99.999%) your correct as I've never
heard them do any foreign language on the BCB although I they do have SW
programming in a ton of other languages. (why not use it in Calif, as I'm
sure some group would understand it) I was guessing and deducting because
of the lack of choices. I've jotted down logs of KEBR (Family Radio) about
 once a season.

Maybe my resources are out-dated, but I couldn't find anything. My only
other loggings from 1210 are CFYM, KEBR, KGYN, KUNF, KHAT, KRSV, KZTS and
KWMG (spanning 10 years) with assorted EE and SS programming.

As a reference, occasionally KBIF 900 in Fresno, CA plays the sort of
programming I was trying to describe. Anyways, no new catches here yet.

Have a great day and thanks for keeping me informed and on the straight
 path.

Re: [IRCA] [dxtip] XEPE-1700

2007-01-02 Thread Tim Hall
The answer is kind of odd...

These guys run two additional stations under what I would consider to
be false pretenses:

1. They operate XESDD-1030 Tijuana as if it were an Ensenada station,
but the real XESDD in Ensenada continues on 920 kHz with no relation
to the new station.

2. They operate XESS-620 Tijuana (after a brief stop on 780 kHz) as
if it were an Ensenada station, but the real XESS in Ensenada
continues to operate on 1450 kHz with no relation to the new station.

... so only XEKTT-1600 (which moved to a Tijuana transmitter and
changed frequencies to 550, 560, and 1700, becoming XEPE somewhere
along the way) has actually vacated its old frequency.

They also operate KURS-1040. For a time, the studios for XESDD-1030
and KURS-1040 were in the same building in Chula Vista. It was odd to
see two stations on adjacent channels operating out of the same
building!

Their FM is XHBCE-105.7 - this one is currently apparently LMA'd to
the folks who lease XEPRS-1090 and is the other half of double X
sports radio...

Re: [IRCA] [dxtip] XEPE-1700

2007-01-02 Thread Tim Hall
Good question. As far as I can tell, the other two appear to be
running more reasonable powers - it seems to me they negotiated
something like 5kW days, 1kW nights, and I would guess they are
behaving themselves more or less.

Co-managed perennial cheater KURS-1040 has reportedly been fined a
couple of times for running over their authorized night power, but
that's on a much smaller scale. I think their licensed power is
something like 63 watts; I suspect they are still running several
hundred watts today, and were probably running at least 1kW several
years ago when they got fined.

XEPE is obnoxious. They're at the very top of the band, yet I'd be
hard pressed to name a 50kW station that gets out so well. They slop
all the way down to 1640 during the day, and create a mixing product
on 1560 (mixing with nearby XEUT-1630, which appears to have cut power
in the past year or so) which sometimes persists well into the night.

Surprisingly, the 1030/1040 combo does not generate whole lot of
interference, even when one listens from locations between the two
transmitter sites. The same was true of 540/550 when XEKTT(XEPE)
started operating from Tijuana (nominally Tecate) on 550.

We need a good sheriff to come in here and clean up this lawless town!
Last I checked, we still had a pirate on 96.9. I think the 106.9 is
gone... And the newer stoplights generate some of the loudest
electrical noise I have ever heard.

[IRCA] Old radio ads - San Diego

2006-12-25 Thread Tim Hall
I recently uncovered a clipping I had saved from the San Diego
Union-Tribune newspaper June 9, 1996. It was a panoramic picture of
the outfield of Lane Field, an old ballpark in downtown San Diego
where the PCL Padres used to play.

The ads in the outfield included
KFMB 550 k.c. - ABC - First on your dial
KYOR 1130 - Your community station
KUSN AM 1510 - Music and sports, weather, 5000 watts, good listening
18 hours daily

(Does anyone know what became of that last one?)
