A couple of the Newfoundland DXpeditions reported Argentina on this frequency;
John Bryant also heard it from Easter Island. A long shot, but with your

I'd be curious to know who has logged this one, and from where.
BTW, I have also yet to hear 600 CBC in Bancroft ON. That is actually my

KEVT was one of the two stations that conducted a DX test this season,
WSRY-1550 Maryland being the other. KEVT can really get out on day power with
code and sweeps; Nigel Pimblett in Alberta caught some sweep tones on their
January test. The test started three and a half hours late; otherwise, I bet
other DXers at such distances would have heard them as well.

I sure hope they can send some DX test-style program content during those two
hours - even with 10 kilowatts, voice IDs (whether English or Spanish!) have a
hard time making it in this day and age.

Paul Lotsof, Frank Luna and Armando Zamora have really been DXers' friends
these past several years - I'm sorry to hear about KEVT's reversals of fortune.

recent months. With 1040 having dumped Adult Standards, that format is now
gone from all three East Tennessee markets (Chattanooga, Knoxville and Johnson
City/Bristol/Kingsport). Ten years ago, you could hear THREE different Adult
Standards satellite feeds on three Knoxpatch daytimers, 670, 1040 and 1180. Is
this format becoming commercially extinct at a comparable speed in other
markets? I remember the instrumental/beautiful/Muzak version of it was fast
disappearing from FM about 20 years ago. Are the vocals now going the same

It's sort of an FCC form of purgatory: these are often stations that are still

Checking 1580 kHz in the White's Radio Log editions at David Gleason's awesome
website, Spring 1953 shows WAVA in Ava, Fall 1953 shows WAVA in Du Quoin, and
Winter 1954 shows WDQN in Du Quoin. So maybe just a city of license change,

I took out my Rand McNally to find Mt. Carmel's location. Extreme southern
Illinois always was a exciting catch for me from my Iowa days. Most notably a
station in a little town about 20 miles NW of Carbondale. The town was Ava
Illinois and the calls were WAVA. Their letter of verification had 'The Voice
of Little Egypt and a mid-eastern dancing girl covering the top portion.
Followed by a quick explanation of why that immediate area was called Little
Egypt. I see by Radio Locator that station no longer exists. They were on 1580
kHz. However there is a station in Du Quoin, less than 20 miles away. How long
has WAVA been off the air and did Du Quoin inherit the frequency?

Just roiling my nostalgia, besides being just plain curious.

Re: [IRCA] Sunset DX during June

2010-04-13 Thread amdxmail

WKKQ-1060 Hibbing was a one-time only log here in East Tennessee many moons
ago. Monday morning April 11, 1977, there was a forest fire watch in effect
for the area and WKKQ was on all night. They'd recently had a power upgrade
from 1 to 5 kw, and, with KYW off for their regular Monday silent period, WKKQ
pretty well enjoyed a clear channel and was putting in a good signal. When the
clears were broken up in the 80's, WKKQ morphed into Nashwauk-650.

This is exactly the one I bought on eBay a few years ago. I right away put the

faint white noise when I turn it on, so I know the battery connection is
working. A pity, as it had never been used. Still in the original box (torn
badly, though) with original packing material. Warranty still there with
Boston 17, Mass. address. On the rear of the radio, it says GENUINE TOP
GRAIN COWHIDE HAND SADDLE STITCHED. Pristine brown leather shining like
it's 1961. Carrying strap tight as a drum and lying nearly parallel to the top
of the receiver. It's obviously never been used, so I can't figure why there's
no sound. 12-614K is the number on the schematic. Well, the schematic is
starting to deteriorate (brittle, torn, wrinkled) so I guess it's technically
not stone mint. Anyone know of a radio museum or somesuch that would be
interested in acquiring it for a reasonable fee? Seeing as how the!
later models of the Realistic TRF were so famous? Maybe they'd want it for
display only, and the fact that it won't play wouldn't matter? It may be the
only mint copy extant, but I don't have the technical knowhow to fix it, and
it's just been sitting in the closet for the past three years.

Subject: [NRC-AM] Application of CFOK-1370 Westlock AB to move to FM
approved by CRTC

The application of CFOK-1370 Westlock AB to move to FM
(97.9 MHz, 27 kW, 93.7 meters) has been approved by the CRTC.

Here in Calgary AB daytime CFOK is a weak groundwave signal.
Nights they fight it out with KXTL-1370 Butte MT with the latter
usually winning. However I believe I have heard CFOK at night
on the crystal set at least once.

http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2010/2010-102.htm

CFOK Westlock - Conversion to FM band
1.
The Commission approves the application by Newcap Inc. (Newcap) for a
broadcasting licence
to operate a new English-language commercial FM radio programming
undertaking in Westlock,
Alberta to replace its AM station CFOK. The terms and conditions of
licence are set out in
the appendix to this decision. There were no interventions to this
application.
The implementation is subject to the notification by the Department
of Industry
(the Department) set out in the appendix.

2.
The station will operate at 97.9 MHz (channel 250B) with an average
effective radiated
power (ERP) of 27,000 watts (maximum ERP of 48,000 watts with an
effective height of
the antenna above average terrain of 93.7 metres).

3.
The new station will maintain CFOK’s Classic Hits music format
targeting adults between
the ages of 25 and 54. Local programming will include 3 hours 24
minutes of pure news
with approximately 75% local news.

Simulcast period and revocation of AM licence
7.
As set out in the appendix to this decision, the licensee is
authorized to simulcast the
programming of the new FM station on CFOK for a transition period of
three months following
the commencement of operations of the FM station. Pursuant to
sections 9(1)(e) and 24(1)
of the Broadcasting Act and consistent with the licensee’s request,
the Commission revokes
the licence for CFOK effective at the end of the simulcast period.

[IRCA] Pre-sunrise powers and Critical Hours powers

2010-02-16 Thread amdxmail
Is any attention paid to Pre-sunrise powers? I don't hear anything
different happening at 6am and haven't for years. It's just another
top-of-the-hour, as far as I can hear. Years ago, on regional
frequencies, station sign-ons at 6:00 would pile on in layers, often
covering the usual night dominant on the channel. Things sound no more
(or less) congested now at 6:03 than they did at 5:57.

Critical Hours restrictions have been ignored for years. When I worked
at the Knoxville stations on 1580 and 1180 in the late 80's, nobody
knew what I was talking about when I mentioned them to staff, including
the owners.

I strongly suspect these power restrictions exist only in some musty
paper file in the bowels of the FCC building, as well as in the
idealistic imaginations of the DXing brotherhood.

Shocking news. His accomplishments were many and varied. Former head

of the Corazon DX e-mail list, and, of course, helped spearhead the

Wow. Clear Channel's KYHN in Fort Smith, Arkansas has been silent since
the Spring 2008 floods inundated the transmitter site. If Disney's WHKT
is off as well, the only US interference east of the Rockies would be
KCNZ in Cedar Falls, Iowa. This would give those of us outside the
Northeast a good shot at the Montreal and Toronto stations.

[ten minutes later] Tuned to 1650 and CINA in Mississauga is very
conspicuously mixing with KCNZ's weak talk! Strong enough on peaks to
line up their Bollywood vocals with the webstream, running 15 seconds
or so behind the AM signal. WHKT is indeed off. Thanks, Bruce!

I just read that Disney has taken 6 of their OO's silent pending
sales.
Apparently the mouse is bleeding.  One of them is 1650 out of the
Virginia Beach
market.  If so, that's a big chance for us east coasters while this
pest is
off.  A deal to buy has been filed the at FCC for it, so it won't be
long.
RADIO DISNEY has taken some of its owned-and-operated stations silent
and has
asked the FCC for authority to remain silent while the stations are
sold
off. Among the filings are requests for silent STAs for KMUS-A/SPERRY,
OK;

KALY-A/LOS RANCHOS DE ALBUQUERQUE, NM; WCOG-A/GREENSBORO; WRJR-A and

I'm amazed Air America lasted as long as they did. I think a long time
ago, the Left and the Right got together and divvied things up. The
Left took control of TV and the Right took control of radio. It's as
if that's now a law of nature, and any attempt of one to trespass on
the other's turf meets with failure.

A question:

How does the FCC handle daytime only stations who are very far north?

If you are licensed to a town that experiences 'midnight sun' or close
to it,
are you allowed to operate until local sunset - or maybe 24 hours a day
-

if the sun never sets?

Do these stations need to operate only very short hours during the
height of

winter
or are their concessions made for this circumstance?

A broader question: Are there any daytimers located that far north to
begin

with?

Thanks for listening, Karl Zuk N2KZ

Saddened to hear this. He was the first DXer I ever wrote. I'd
received a sample copy of DX Monitor in March of 1970 and noticed his
submissions. I asked him in a letter if he could recommend a good
receiver as I'd decided to become a DXer like the other guys (and one
gal) in that issue of DXM. He replied and recommended Radio Shack's
Realistic TRF, mentioning good results Bruce Bacon and George Sherman,
among others, were having with it. I've often shuddered to think what
overpriced mediocrities I might have sprung for without his advice, as
I knew nothing about electronics. He was only a high school senior
then. A DXer's friend indeed.

I have very bad news. I received this e-mail from Cheryl Ervin Hill.

George Zeller
Cleveland, OH

E-MAIL:

Harry Lee Helms, Jr., my first cousin and good friend, passed away on
Sunday, November 15th, around 11:00 pm. He was 57.

As you probably know, he has bravely fought an aggressive cancer for
the last several years. For the past few months he and his wife Di
have lived in his home town of Fort Mill, SC, surrounded and loved by
his extended family, old friends, and his dogs and cats.

I asked Harry recently how I could be useful to him in the final
days, so he sent me a short list of friends to contact when the end
came. I probably do not know you personally, but I know that you
have to be a special sort of person to make the list. Please know
that this message is an act of love from Harry to you at the end of
his amazing life.

We ask that you remember him now as you knew him in years past. I
believe that he would have me remind you to recognize your life's
passion and let it guide you always.

Our family will gather together informally later this week to find
some closure for ourselves and to wish him peace.

Harry was one of a kind. We will miss him greatly.

the others being 13 deletions and nine frequency changers. SOUTH
Carolina I had down to two (Loris-1240 and North Myrtle Beach-900) at
one time; four now since Darlington-1400 (ex-1350) and Cameron-1490

suspect SC has an easier time getting here because of the absence of
mountain blockage.

After rearly 44 years of QSLing (Feb 65 to now), I have reached a
milestone of 3,000 MW QSLs from 95 countries. The one received in
today's mail is another jewell. It made my day.

970KFBX AK, Fairbanks, received a very nice QSL card NewsRadio
970 in blue and KFBX is yellow lettering. Under that in black
lettering Fairbanks Alaska USAand 970 kHz AM 10,000 watts.
Also enclosed was a nice letter on KFBX letterheard. in 358d V/S: Scott
Diseth, C.E.. Mentioning, they rarely get reports from the Lower 48.
Address: KFBX, Clear Channel Radio, 546 9th Avenue, Fairbanks AK
99701. Alaska QSL #60, MW QSL 3,000. (PM-OR)

I had given up on this one, as the report was tentative and the CD left
a lot to be desired quality-wise. No ID, but I did have spot for a Car
Dealer with the phone prefix, so I knew it was KFBX. I am sure happy
with this one.

I got this email from Bill Harris, Director of Engineering for Citadel

Hello Paul,

Thanks for the forward of the message regarding
the 770 signal in Santa Fe. The booster transmitter
is not actually synchronized with the main in
Albuquerque. Rather, each transmitter is using a
GPS frequency locked standard. When this system
was installed, the two signals were intentionally
slightly offset in frequency to place the worst
of the interference zone in the least 'damaging'
areas. If the frequency shifts slightly, the
interference zone 'wanders', and you will experience
increased interference.

The booster generally does a pretty good job
in the area immediately around Santa Fe, but
not very far out of town. The route Mr. Callarman
took kept him in a pretty weak signal area
from the main transmitter, where even the relatively
low power of the booster continued to cause quite
a bit of interference.

With the faraway stuff hard to pull in nowadays, I decided to concentrate on
some close-by DX this summer.? Phasing the Sanyo stereo's built-in AM antenna
against the Select-a-tenna, I discovered I can get a deep null on Knoxville's
WITA-1490 during critical hours, not just at night.? Spending much of the
summer rolling tape on 1490, I was rewarded with two long-sought stations.

?

1490?? WCSV? TN? Crossville - 8/1 1900 EDT - Fair in local WITA's null with
WCSV Crossville, a Peg Broadcasting station - the Plateau's home for ESPN
Radio!? Was my second-closest unheard at 60 miles.? After 30+ years (ever
since they vacated 1520) of needing WCSV, I can now hear traces of their ESPN
under WITA at high noon!

?

1490?? WCHM? GA? Clarkesville - 7/10 2000 - Poor in local WITA's null with
WCHM Clarkesville, then Fox news.? Was my third-closest unheard at 86 miles.

?

1600?? WCGO? IL? Chicago Heights?- 6/14 2200 - Faint with calmly spoken WCGO
Chicago Heights, then ABC news.

?

1600?? WATX? TN? Algood - 6/21 0700 - Fair ending Wilburn Brothers tune, then
... new home for country, Classic Country 1600, WATX Algood- Cookeville.
?Classic Country 1600!, into another oldie.? Now here, ex-1590.

[IRCA] AM ratings source?

2008-09-15 Thread amdxmail
Years ago, Billboard, Broadcasting et al used to publish quarterly ratings for
US radio stations.? They'd be in a chart form showing the most recent
measurements, as well as those for the previous three quarters.? Is this info
online now?

?

With nite IBOC a year old yesterday, I'm curious to see what changes there may
have been in audience sizes.? As I recall, the HD apologists said that the use
of IBOC would increase AM ratings, especially amongst the
goatee-and-shaved-head demo.? Did it?

KNZZ-1100 Grand Junction CO heard this morning on overnite recordings

Listen for woman saying Newsradio 1100!, then legal ID by man, then
same lady gives timecheck, then Fox News sounder. All this presupposes
they're still at it tonite.

One or two DX tests with code have made it here in the 90's, but this
is the first voice I've pulled from them since a one-time-only Monday
morn reception in 1978 with Cleveland off. Calls then were KREX.

Heard on both patterns with sweep tones, step tones and code. Mostly
fair to weak in WNML's (10 kw at 16 miles) weak spot, but at one
point during the second half-hour, the sweeps were equal to WNML!

Some Spanish also noted at times, probably Cuba as their National

CBC Radio One switch to FM dial delayed
The Cape Breton Post

SYDNEY — The CBC says it’s highly unlikely CBC Radio One in Sydney will
switch

over to the FM dial this fiscal year or next.
The radio station hoped to make the move by sometime next fiscal year
but radio

regional director Susan Mitton said that isn’t likely to happen.
“What they are going to do for the next year is prioritize areas of the
country
that have no service, so we aren’t obviously there,” she said. “It’s
our
Maritime priority but there are other parts of the country that have no
CBC

Radio One service. They are ahead of us.”
Mitton said the move to FM is still on the wish list for next fiscal
year.
“We’re lower on the list though so it’s highly unlikely unless
something
happens, say a project in another part of the country doesn’t happen,
well, that
would obviously free up those and we could get back on the priority
list.”
When the CBC received permission from the Canadian Radio-Television
and
Telecommunications Commission in July to switch over to the FM dial it
was given

two to three years to make the move, she noted.
The CBC has said the AM transmitter and antenna system off Keltic Drive
will
have to be replaced, along with other related broadcasting equipment,
for the

move from 1140 AM to 97.1 FM.
The switch to FM will improve the signal, and the sound, for Radio One
listeners, and will extend the broadcast into some pockets that
currently aren't

able to receive the AM signal.

[IRCA] CFFX-960 DX test

2008-01-15 Thread amdxmail

Heard with very faint code at 1:02 and 2:03 EST through a mix of IBOC
hash (probably from WWJ-950 Detroit), WERC, WFIR, KMA (I just KNEW they
would go 24 hours as soon as that antenna work was finished last fall),
and the Cuban ticker.

No sweeps noted, and no test material heard around the 12:00 hour.

Then-CKWS was first heard in November 1971. They were playing Sweet
City Woman by the Stampeders that night. They remained a fairly
frequent visitor throughout the decade.

What a decade it was on 960: ZFB1 in Bermuda, WEAV in upstate NY, WELI
New Haven with monthly frequency check, KROF in Abbeville LA with a
hurricane watch and Cajun music, KFLN MT with voice ID on a frequency
check, CFAC Calgary, KLAD OR with voice ID on a DX test, XEK Nuevo
Laredo on monthly frequency check (dunno why an XE was paying for one),
and Radio Sutatenza in Magangue, Colombia.

With KMA 24 hours, is KGGF-690 Coffeyville the last nightly sign-offer
in the Midwest?

Thanks, Saul and the gang, for this test!

That letter pronunciation guide doesn't seem too accurate to me, and
leaves out some very common alternate pronunciations to boot.

Here's how they sound to me.

A - ah
B - beh
C - seh
CH - cheh
D - deh
E - eh
F - ef'-feh
G - heh
H - ah'-cheh
I - ee (long e sound)
J - ho'-tah
K - kah
L - eh'-leh
LL - eh'-yeh, ehl'-yeh, eh'-jeh, or even eh'-sheh or doe-bleh-eh'-leh
M - em'-eh
N - en'-eh
Ñ - en'-yeh
O - oh
P - peh
Q - koo
R - eh'-reh
S - eh'-seh
T - teh
U - ooh
V - beh, or sometimes ooh-beh
W - doe-bleh-ooh, doe-bleh-beh, sometimes ooh-beh-doe-bleh
X - eh'-kees
Y - ee-gree-eh'-gah, yeh, jeh, or sheh
Z - seh'-tah

Note that B and V sound alike, which could cause some confusion.

Also, when letters are doubled, they can be combined into a doble.
For example, I've heard XEEY often identify as Eh'-kees Doe'-bleh-eh'
Yeh.

Wikipedia has a pretty good article on the Spanish alphabet:

[IRCA] WCXH-780 DX test

2007-11-24 Thread amdxmail

I listened like a hawk for the entire hour, WBBM minimized as much as possible
with the gear on a North-South bearing - not a trace of any test audio.

Was rolling tape at the same time with another rig facing East-West and
accepting the WBBM interference (I don't really know what bearing something in
Far Eastern Maine would be from here, and didn't want to take any chances).?
Haven't played the recording back yet, but I ain't optimistic.

I wonder if a station this far Northeast is subject to polar absorption, such
as Newfoundland might be??

Thanks as always to all who made?the test?possible.

[IRCA] WFAW-940 DX test

2007-11-13 Thread amdxmail

Tried from 1:00 to 2:00 EST, heard WMIX IL with decent signal, so knew
conditions to the midwest were OK and my radio was positioned right.? But .. no
sign of a test.

Kept the receiver tuned to WMIX (Old Ad Con music), and decided to rest my
eyes for a few minutes at 2:00.? Awakened at 3:52 by loud sweeps!? Then some
code.?

I've already heard? more DX tests this season than all of last season (four vs.
three).? Thanks, all!

[IRCA] WIGG-1420 DX test

2007-11-04 Thread amdxmail

Heard with code, test tone, many Floyd Cramer tunes and one voice ID.? Rather
weak for 5kw n-d; WHK and WVJS, the usual top dogs on 1420, were in control
nearly all the time.? Heard March 26, 1971 (on a frequency check, I think) and
happy to hear it again.

[IRCA] WLPO-1220 DX test - correction

2007-10-29 Thread amdxmail

Tape replay shows that I should have said promo for a college game this
afternoon on WLPO AM and WLPOdot.net, not WLPO- FM, which ceased to exist a
good many years ago per Google.? Am I mortified ...

Subject: [NRC-AM] WLPO-1220 DX test

Heard weak to fair with code starting up promptly at 4:00 EDT, sporadic sweep
tones and code noted later.
Were they the Muzak/beautiful music station?? I picked out instrumental
arrangements of Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile and Somewhere My Love at various
times.? Haven't heard that format on the radio in 20 years.? I thought that the
digital hash from WPHT-1210 would zap the chance of any voice, but right at the
bottom of the hour I copied Friday night HS football scores, promo for a
college game this afternoon on WLPO AM and FM, and Halloween safety tips
sponsored by three area businesses.?

First heard 20 years ago this week, during the first year that 1220ers could be
on at night.? Don't remember hearing them again till now - thanks, everybody!

[IRCA] WIRL-1290 DX test

2007-10-21 Thread amdxmail

Heard well on frequent peaks with Classic Country, slo-speed code, and IDs,
both for the test and the regular drop-ins after songs.? WHIO Dayton, WNBF
Binghamton, Unforgettable KIVY Crockett, TX (first time in 21 years) were
also in the mix, along with an unID with black preacher.?

I've had the other three Peorias (1020, 1350 and 1470) in the log for the past
35 years, and am mighty pleased to finally hear this one - thanks to all who
made it possible!
