KEVT was one of the two stations that conducted a DX test this season, WSRY-1550 Maryland being the other. KEVT can really get out on day power with code and sweeps; Nigel Pimblett in Alberta caught some sweep tones on their January test. The test started three and a half hours late; otherwise, I bet other DXers at such distances would have heard them as well. I sure hope they can send some DX test-style program content during those two hours - even with 10 kilowatts, voice IDs (whether English or Spanish!) have a hard time making it in this day and age. Re: [IRCA] Sunset DX during June
WKKQ-1060 Hibbing was a one-time only log here in East Tennessee many moons ago. Monday morning April 11, 1977, there was a forest fire watch in effect for the area and WKKQ was on all night. They'd recently had a power upgrade from 1 to 5 kw, and, with KYW off for their regular Monday silent period, WKKQ pretty well enjoyed a clear channel and was putting in a good signal. When the clears were broken up in the 80's, WKKQ morphed into Nashwauk-650. Steve Francis Alcoa, Tennessee -Original Message- From: Donald K. [IRCA] Pre-sunrise powers and Critical Hours powers
Is any attention paid to Pre-sunrise powers? I don't hear anything different happening at 6am and haven't for years. It's just another top-of-the-hour, as far as I can hear. Years ago, on regional frequencies, station sign-ons at 6:00 would pile on in layers, often covering the usual night dominant on the channel. Things sound no more (or less) congested now at 6:03 than they did at 5:57. Critical Hours restrictions have been ignored for years. When I worked at the Knoxville stations on 1580 and 1180 in the late 80's, nobody knew what I was talking about when I mentioned them to staff, including the owners. I strongly suspect these power restrictions exist only in some musty paper file in the bowels of the FCC building, as well as in the idealistic imaginations of the DXing brotherhood. Zuk karl...@hotmail.com To: irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Fri, Jan 1, 2010 10:50 pm Subject: [IRCA] Far North Daytime Only AMs A question: How does the FCC handle daytime only stations who are very far north? If you are licensed to a town that experiences 'midnight sun' or close to it, are you allowed to operate until local sunset - or maybe 24 hours a day - if the sun never sets? Do these stations need to operate only very short hours during the height of winter or are their concessions made for this circumstance? A broader question: Are there any daytimers located that far north to begin with? Re: [IRCA] Harry Helms Passes
Saddened to hear this. He was the first DXer I ever wrote. I'd received a sample copy of DX Monitor in March of 1970 and noticed his submissions. I asked him in a letter if he could recommend a good receiver as I'd decided to become a DXer like the other guys (and one gal) in that issue of DXM. He replied and recommended Radio Shack's Realistic TRF, mentioning good results Bruce Bacon and George Sherman, among others, were having with it. I've often shuddered to think what overpriced mediocrities I might have sprung for without his advice, as I knew nothing about electronics. He was only a high school senior then. I received this e-mail from Cheryl Ervin Hill. George Zeller Cleveland, OH E-MAIL: Harry Lee Helms, Jr., my first cousin and good friend, passed away on Sunday, November 15th, around 11:00 pm. He was 57. As you probably know, he has bravely fought an aggressive cancer for the last several years. For the past few months he and his wife Di have lived in his home town of Fort Mill, SC, surrounded and loved by his extended family, old friends, and his dogs and cats. I asked Harry recently how I could be useful to him in the final days, so he sent me a short list of friends to contact when the end came. I probably do not know you personally, but I know that you have to be a special sort of person to make the list. Please know that this message is an act of love from Harry to you at the end of his amazing life. We ask that you remember him now as you knew him in years past. I believe that he would have me remind you to recognize your life's passion and let it guide you always. Our family will gather together informally later this week to find some closure for ourselves and to wish him peace. Harry was one of a kind. We will miss him greatly. How close are you to completing NC, one would think close. 73 and good luck.. KAZ Thanks for the vote of confidence, Neil, but I'm nowhere near it. Still 42 I've never heard. Only 178 of the 200 are active facilities, the others being 13 deletions and nine frequency changers. SOUTH Carolina I had down to two (Loris-1240 and North Myrtle Beach-900) at one time; four now since Darlington-1400 (ex-1350) and Cameron-1490 came on in recent years. I don't know anything about propagation, but suspect SC has an easier time getting here because of the absence of mountain blockage. The booster transmitter is not actually synchronized with the main in Albuquerque. Rather, each transmitter is using a GPS frequency locked standard. When this system was installed, the two signals were intentionally slightly offset in frequency to place the worst of the interference zone in the least 'damaging' areas. If the frequency shifts slightly, the interference zone 'wanders', and you will experience increased interference. The booster generally does a pretty good job in the area immediately around Santa Fe, but not very far out of town. The route Mr. Callarman took kept him in a pretty weak signal area from the main transmitter, where even the relatively low power of the booster continued to cause quite a bit of interference. The radio station hoped to make the move by sometime next fiscal year but radio regional director Susan Mitton said that isn’t likely to happen. “What they are going to do for the next year is prioritize areas of the country that have no service, so we aren’t obviously there,” she said. “It’s our Maritime priority but there are other parts of the country that have no CBC Radio One service. They are ahead of us.” Mitton said the move to FM is still on the wish list for next fiscal year. “We’re lower on the list though so it’s highly unlikely unless something happens, say a project in another part of the country doesn’t happen, well, that would obviously free up those and we could get back on the priority list.” When the CBC received permission from the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission in July to switch over to the FM dial it was given two to three years to make the move, she noted. The CBC has said the AM transmitter and antenna system off Keltic Drive will have to be replaced, along with other related broadcasting equipment, for the move from 1140 AM to 97.1 FM. The switch to FM will improve the signal, and the sound, for Radio One listeners, and will extend the broadcast into some pockets that currently aren't able to receive the AM signal. 18/02/08 _ ___ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Heard with very faint code at 1:02 and 2:03 EST through a mix of IBOC hash (probably from WWJ-950 Detroit), WERC, WFIR, KMA (I just KNEW they would go 24 hours as soon as that antenna work was finished last fall), and the Cuban ticker. No sweeps noted, and no test material heard around the 12:00 hour. Then-CKWS was first heard in November 1971. They were playing Sweet City Woman by the Stampeders that night. They remained a fairly frequent visitor throughout the decade. What a decade it was on 960: ZFB1 in Bermuda, WEAV in upstate NY, WELI New Haven with monthly frequency check, KROF in Abbeville LA with a hurricane watch and Cajun music, KFLN MT with voice ID on a frequency check, CFAC Calgary, KLAD OR with voice ID on a DX test, XEK Nuevo Laredo on monthly frequency check (dunno why an XE was paying for one), and Radio Sutatenza in Magangue, Colombia. A - ah B - beh C - seh CH - cheh D - deh E - eh F - ef'-feh G - heh H - ah'-cheh I - ee (long e sound) J - ho'-tah K - kah L - eh'-leh LL - eh'-yeh, ehl'-yeh, eh'-jeh, or even eh'-sheh or doe-bleh-eh'-leh M - em'-eh N - en'-eh Ñ - en'-yeh O - oh P - peh Q - koo R - eh'-reh S - eh'-seh T - teh U - ooh V - beh, or sometimes ooh-beh W - doe-bleh-ooh, doe-bleh-beh, sometimes ooh-beh-doe-bleh X - eh'-kees Y - ee-gree-eh'-gah, yeh, jeh, or sheh Z - seh'-tah Note that B and V sound alike, which could cause some confusion. Also, when letters are doubled, they can be combined into a doble. For example, I've heard XEEY often identify as Eh'-kees Doe'-bleh-eh' Yeh. [IRCA] WCXH-780 DX test
I listened like a hawk for the entire hour, WBBM minimized as much as possible with the gear on a North-South bearing - not a trace of any test audio. Was rolling tape at the same time with another rig facing East-West and accepting the WBBM interference (I don't really know what bearing something in Far Eastern Maine would be from here, and didn't want to take any chances).? Haven't played the recording back yet, but I ain't optimistic. I wonder if a station this far Northeast is subject to polar absorption, such as Newfoundland might be?? [IRCA] WFAW-940 DX test
Tried from 1:00 to 2:00 EST, heard WMIX IL with decent signal, so knew conditions to the midwest were OK and my radio was positioned right.? But .. no sign of a test. Kept the receiver tuned to WMIX (Old Ad Con music), and decided to rest my eyes for a few minutes at 2:00.? Awakened at 3:52 by loud sweeps!? Then some code.? I've already heard? more DX tests this season than all of last season (four vs. three).? Thanks, all! Steve Francis Alcoa, Tennessee Email and AIM finally together. [IRCA] WIGG-1420 DX test
Heard with code, test tone, many Floyd Cramer tunes and one voice ID.? Rather weak for 5kw n-d; WHK and WVJS, the usual top dogs on 1420, were in control nearly all the time.? Heard March 26, 1971 (on a frequency check, I think) and happy to hear it again. Steve Francis Alcoa, Tennessee Email and AIM finally together.
