Re: [IRCA] The Sony SRF m37v

2007-11-17 Thread chris and anne
I do a lot of DXing with this one. I've got 31 states and 4 Canadian
provinces with it including CHRB in High River, Alberta. I get probably
40-50 hours on the single AAA cell. The Wx channel is a joke on mine.
Terrible selectivity. 73, Chris Johnson K2FO Taylors, S.C.

 Powell,

Yes your right about the selectivity. KPOJ 620 can be heard on 640. The
nice thing about Westport the nearest station is over 20 miles away and
 it's low power.

It's not bad. It does NOT like strong signals. I have
a $49 one that's better but couldn't find it this AM.
In Silverstreet SC I was greeted on 600 with WMC Cedar
 Rapids. Normally WSJS pounds in.

[IRCA] WFAW 940 Test

2007-11-12 Thread chris and anne
The test was heard !!! I listened right on time at midnight CST and heard
nothing for the first hour, and fell asleep. I heard a lot of WMIX, Mt. Vernon,
Il. that first hour . Anyway, I awoke at 0242 hearing sweep tones.yippee!!
I listened for the rest of the test, and heard sweep tones again at 0251 and
also 0256.!! Never heard any morse, but I was delighted to even hear the
sweep tones. WMIX was the major pest here in northern South Carolina. WMAC in
Macon was nulled and not a factor. This test was of special interest to me as
I visit the Delavan , Wi. area a couple of times a year, and enjoy listening to
WFAW when I do.They carry Neal Boortz, probably my favorite talker. My
thanks to the folks at WFAW, especially Ernie Swanson, K9LO , and Jim Pogue and
any others for making this test possible. Test was heard on both the Grundig
S350 and also on the mighty Sony Walkman. 73, Chris Johnson K2FO Taylors,

I'd guess the stations that are actually providing programming

  Oddly, it's called poultry wire.

If it's the stuff I am thinking it is, about 1/4 inch squares
 openings, steel
wire woven together and dipped in molten zinc, they call it hardware
 cloth
 out here.

I've used it a few times years ago when I needed a wide fat ground
 connector
from a radio shelf to a metal plate on a concrete floor. I was having
 RFI
issues and the setup took care of the feedback.

 Rick Kunath

Archaeologists are fond of this stuff. You build dirt sifters
out of a wooden square frame and the cloth makes the
bottom. Pour in the dirt and shake the frame (the more
elegant ones suspend the entire frame so your arms don't)
and you sort out the larger items. You can get a 1/8 inch
mesh, as well. And yes it is known as hardware cloth
in Fla as well. It is quite stiff. The wires make exact squares.

What I know as chicken wire has a hexagonal-shaped
opening about one inch on a side and is much more
flexible, and surely costs a lot less. Just enough to keep
the chicken from escaping. It's woven much like a chain link
 fence.

I never heard the term poultry wire.

That would be another Z guy named Warren Zevon, not to be confused with
Dr. Z from Florida. His post will be the next for me to read on the
 topic, and I can't wait!

Probably the easiest (but maybe not the best) analogy to describe
Frank Zappa would be asking you to remember the first time you saw
Little Richard and remember the comments you most likely made about
how different he was. Step that up by about 5 notches, put him in
the psychedelic timeframe, and make sure that you include both
appearance and music when you consider the strangeness, and you have
 Frank Zappa.

He was an excellent musician though few ever really noticed. He
wanted to be different, and he did it well. There was a lot of shock
value to his music and he plowed through what many considered
acceptable or objectionable, and he spared no expense with on-stage
theatrics. Because he was a musical wizard, he was able to do it for
more than 20 years before he died of cancer.

You either liked him or hated him. I'd venture a guess that you
would have hated him with a passion (to put it mildly).

Frank Zappa first came to prominence with this group, The Mothers of
Invention in the early 1960's. You might have heard some of his hits
such as Werewolves of London or Send Lawyers, Guns Money in the
1970's. But I'd agree with Mike as to your probable reaction.

 DX update from northern Delaware:

Need help with this one. Who is carrying Fox Sports Radio on 900 khz. and
IDs as 'AM 900, The Ticket' and what power are they running? I’m surmising
a station in GA (Savannah?) given the car dealership ad that I heard after
the ID. (None of the sources that I usually go to for help IDing a station
list any sports radio stations in GA on the indicated frequency.)

 15-Aug-07 // 2101 local // 900 khz. // Unid. with CHML phase nulled. //
 Fox
Sports Radio ID then male with AM 900, The Ticket. Into commercial for a
car dealership. At 67 seconds and 79 seconds into the clip (provided
 below)
I’m pretty sure I hear mentions of 'Savannah Dodge'. A Google search
revealed such a dealership in Savannah, GA, located on Abercorn Street:

 http://www.automotive.com/dodge/20/georgia/chatham/savannah/index.html

Indeed, immediately after the second car dealership mention, I believe I
 hear said street mentioned.

 MP3 clip available here:

[IRCA] CKKW 1090 Kitchener,Ont.

2007-08-07 Thread chris and anne
I've been hearing an oldies station in and out of the noise every
nightnever could catch any ID but suspected that it was CKKW.two nights
ago , I heard them with the Oldies 1090 ID followed by a PSA mentioning
that it would be helpful to keep your dogs in the house, or tied up so that the
postman can deliver the mailI went to their website and emailed them and
sent this info to themand got a confirmation of this , signed by Pete
Travers, P.D., and Cathy Maciaczyk, who said yes, we have that PSA on air
right now. 1090 is one of the clearest frequencies here at night.an
occasional WBAL or KAAY , both quite weak. Does anyone think they are staying
on day patternthey are 10KW day and night with a much more restrictive
pattern at night, mostly northbound. ??? Heard on the Sony Walkman .

Keep in mind that most TIS stations are designed for short distance
operation. Most TIS stations have a very minimal ground system that is
mostly for static/lightning dissipation rather than for counterpoise
purposes. I have inspected well over 100 TIS installations up close and
only a couple had efficient ground systems. Most of the pole mount
antennas have only a simple ground rod at the base of the pole. I have
also inspected five TIS stations using the big Valcom antennas. Only one
of them had an actual counterpoise. The two at D/FW Airport each had
only a single chemically enhanced ground rod. Interestingly, the TIS
stations with the best signals seem to be the roof mounted ones that
either use an actual ground plane laid out on the roof, or the metal
roof support beams, or an actual metal roof as the counterpoise. The
presence of a counterpoise combined with the height of the roof mount
units seems to give them superior coverage.

I agree Powell. That is unfortunate because in the beginning of
broadcasting, DXers were an integral part of the picture. They were
involved in helping to let stations know how their signal was doing and
a large number of the early radio listeners were de facto DXers because
they simply enjoyed listening to distant stations. Stations used to
actively seek out the assistance of DXers.

As much as I enjoy hard core DXing, I actually spend much of my time
just simply listening to distant stations just to enjoy the content.
Several stations here on the East Coast come into mind. WBZ, KDKA, WSM,
the NYC stations, WGY, WHAM, etc. especially when they are running local
content. That to me is relaxing. I would like to think I enjoy
listening to distant radio stations for listening sake and that DXing is
an adjunct. I bet a lot of DXers feel the same way. That I think is the
major reason I have a problem with the break down of the clear channels
even though it gives DXers more targets to listen to.

Although I have not been directly involved in radio with a career, I
love radio broadcasting and the history of radio. For the past two years
I have been writing a history of radio broadcasting in Spokane. The
deeper I get into it, the more fascinating it becomes. Many radio
stations had to go through a lot just to stay on the air. And of course,
the intrigue is fascinating as is learning about the station personnel
as people. Just recently I spoke with Art MacKelvie, one of the founders
of KZUN in Opportunity, Washington. It was fun hearing his stories and
 his views about broadcasting.

I also believe that DXers could do more to foster good relationships
with radio stations. When I visit radio stations and talk with the
station personnel, I sometimes detect through body language or the tone
of their voice that they do not have much appreciation for DXers. It
could be that some bad apples have ruined our reputation. I HATE IT. One
CE told me that he threw reception reports in the trash without looking
at them can as soon as he received them. It seems that one certain DXer
made some unreasonable demands of him. Sure, a few station personnel may
have thin skins, but what have we as DXers done to foster good
relationships with stations? I think we can do more. Something to
 consider.

I lived in Dorchester (Boston), MA from 1937 until 1959, then in Dedham,
Braintree, and Hyannis, MA, then for a short stay in Bristol, CT. In those
days my favorite station was WHDH-850. They broadcast Braves, Bruins,
Celtics, and Red Sox games, and I think Harvard U. football. I do remember
Carl de Suze and Dave Maynard. When I sang with the Jamies (1959-1960) Dave
Maynard had us on his afternoon (?) radio show. Do remember that Leo Egan
had an afternoon bandstand type show, and we made that gig. BZ was hot
in those days for music. WBZ-FM had a hot jazz show at night with Bill
Marlowe. He loved playing Basie, Sinatra, Garner, and Bruebeck tunes. And
the guys I hung out with thought it was hip referring to Sinatra as the
Generalissimo. Do beleive that WBZ axed Marlowe, for what I don't know.
But yeah, WHDH and BZ, those stations where big in those days.
Then one night I picked up a station in West Virginia. Station was WWVA.
Oh yeah, bigtime DX. Oh, I heard stations from Hartford, Nashua, Albany,
and New York City, but hearing WWVA, that was truly good stuff.
How the hell did I get on this gig? Hi?
Feeling a bit better these days.

Everyone seems to assume that KGA will downgrade to a Class B to allow an
upgrade of KPIG. Although that is probably what will happen, there are
plausible scenarios under which KPIG could upgrade its night signal while
KGA remains a Class A. With the five towers at the KGA/KJRB site, KGA has
many options for modifying its night pattern to reduce radiation toward
KPIG. That reduction alone, with no change in KPIG's night pattern or
 power,
would improve KPIG's night coverage because KPIG's NIF contour is probably
entirely determined by the 10% skywave that KGA delivers to the north Bay
area. Remember KGA sends more than 2600 mV/m @ 1km toward KPIG. Using the
existing towers, designing an array that sends only 10% of that toward
 KPIG
would most likely allow KPIG to extend its NIF coverage to 10% of the
existing NIF field intensity. And KGA could probably reduce its signal
toward KPIG by a factor of more than 10 without great difficulty.

No doubt, though, KPIG wants more--that is, a substantial increase in
 night
power, which would allow further extension of its night coverage. As you
probably know, KPIG has a most unusual antenna system. I believe it to be
the US's only rooftop DA. In addition, one element of the five-element
 array
is a drop-wire suspended from a cable attached to the tops of two of the
four real towers. I have no clue as to how much tighter KPIG's night
pattern could be made, but for KGA to remain a Class A, KPIG would have to
continue limiting its night signal toward KGA. If KGA pulled in its night
pattern, the limitation on KPIG's nighttime signal to the north would be
relaxed because KGA's protected contour would lie much further north than
 it
does at present. In other words, the distance from KPIG to KGA's protected
contour might easily increase by a factor of three or four. That could
 allow
a substantial increase in KPIG's night power without modification of
 KPIG's
night pattern. If the minimum to the north could be made deeper, KPIG
 could
increase its power further. My guess is that with the appropriate mods at
KGA, KPIG might be able to increase its night power by a factor of 10 or
more without forcing KGA to give up its Class A status. It's not
inconceivable that KPIG could run as much as 5 kW at night without KGA
having to drop to a lower class.

The 1070 example shows what happens when the FCC doesn't think. 1) The SC
station runs day rig at night to try drown out WIBC (beamed right at them)
and 2) listeners still turn away due to the QRM.

Most listeners (NOT DXers) just tune away when there's too much (ie little
to DXers lots to listeners) QRM or QRN and go to another station.

Just think what these listeners will do when the AM band is a mess of IBOC
hiss at night !! 73 KAZ

I do. It makes a mess of the frequency. It degrades

1070 for example down here is a jumble. Even though
WIBC has a super ton of RF my way it's almost never

illegal high power at night had WIBC in the background

As I observed earlier, the NRC DA Pattern Book shows WIBC as having a
minor lobe (about 5 kW ERP) toward the west of Indianapolis. Why
it's there, I dunno. Maybe want to put a strong signal into
 Vincennes, Indiana.

Six, in-line towers and 200 kW ERP days and 60 kW ERP nights toward

WIBC dominates here in upstate S.C., and was heard regularly in the Orlando
area. Their 6 tower set up is easily seen along the east side of I-65, north
of Indianapolis. WFLI is a weak second here and local WCSZ is never heard
here at night, 16 miles NNE of Greenville, S.C. In fact, when I last
checked, WCSZ was not on the air, again.!! I just checked radio-locator and
it lists WCSZ as currently Off the air. .CBA was dominant in eastern
NYS ( the mid Hudson Valley) with CHOK in Sarnia often heard as well as WKOK
Sunbury, Pa. CHOK has never had a signal that seemed to match the pattern
in Radio-locator. 73, Chris K4NHL

Re: [IRCA] WLGC format change

Hi allIn this market ( Greenville-Spartanburg..probably 800,000 in
the metro areawe have only 1 sports station...WCCP 104.9 in Clemson,
S.C. a rim shot in Greenville and almost useless in Spartanburg..we have
two news/talkers, who simulcastWORD/WYRD950/1330 and the rest are SS
or religion on AMOoops, I forgot about little WPCI, an eclectic little
AM on 1490 which plays a mix of blues, rock, reggae, soul and jazz with NO
commercials...owned by a guy who plays what he wantsno suits to
answer toit has a loyal following, but its signal is poor in this very
rocky part of the state with poor ground conductivity.between a 0 and a
2 in most areas this is arguably the most conservative area in the
southhome of Bob Jones Universitywhere women must wear dresses, and
married couples cannot hold hands on campus.!! Bob Jones plays some
beatiful music on its WMUU AM and FM.with religion sandwhiched in from
time to time.FM here is the usual CW, SS, Rock, MOR, religion, and a
rimshot WBT FM which is in glorious monoallowing for better coverage of
news talk with their 6KW signalthey simulcast WBT AM 24/7. Also of
interest is WNCW which is on 88.7 in Spindale,N.C.with a Xmtr. on Mt.
Mitchell at 6638' ASL and 17KW , and translators in Greenville,S.C. and
Charlotte and Boone (N.C.) It is owned by Isothermal Community College and
plays a nice mix with heavy emphasis on Bluegrass. Didn't mean to get so

 Group

WLGC, 1520, Greenup, KY is no longer // WLGC FM, 105.7, cw. It is
now carrying Sporting News Radio throughout its broadcast day. No call
 change. WLGC becomes the Huntingdon/Ashland/Ironton market's 2nd
 full-time
sports station, joining WCMI-1340, Ashland, which is ESPN. WRVC-930 also
carries a good deal of ESPN, especially on weekends.

 Go look here:

You may want to start your own list.

Yo entiendo porque yo veo la cajita que dice start
 your own HCDX channel

Well, Bob Coomler, Bob Young, yourself, and yours
truly make four of us that interested. As I see it, we
don't have to talk techincal stuff all the time
either. Special event stations, scheduled QSO times,
interesting and/or DX QSOs, etc. should keep us pretty
 busy.

I'll update the others, submit a request, and we'll
 see what happens.

Hi Joe and Bert and anyone interested,

Well I got my first ever QSO tonight. I found an AM group on 75 M, 3885
 KHz,
didn't do much talking, were a bunch of old friends I guess catching up on
things. They said my signal was good, most or all were from upstate NY,
probably 300-500 miles from here. The DX-100 puts out about 130 watts on
 AM.
The two big AM frequencies around here seem to be 1885 on 160 and 3885 on
 75. So that was a big thrill for me, took me two months of fooling with
 all
the stuff to get everything running nice, but the worst part was getting
 the
antenna up in the jungle behind the house. Now I'm going to start working
 on
the HW-101, is supposed to be ready to go, we'll see,

To Bob, Bert the group,

Just last night night, I got my 15 meter stick antenna
with radials tuned up and running. I still have 40 and
20 meter antenna issues, but hopfully before too long.

So when you're ready to do this, please count me in.
And I even have a QSL card made up...

[IRCA] Last night on 1030

2007-06-03 Thread chris and anne

Just after midnight, on 1030, I heard a SS stn. completely wiping out WBZ.
Conditions were poor last night,.all the 50kw NDA's were down from usual
levels.but this SS stn. was HUGEseemed to loop NNW by SSE...played SS
love balladsat one time , it gave a toll free # but my SS is poor, as in I
never learned it in HS or college. Took Latin and French instead. This stn.
disappeared abruptly at 12:43 EDST this morning.and then WBZ was heard
surprisingly loud. Maybe WONQ ?? 73, Chris K4NHL who was lucky enough

[IRCA] LAST NIGHT

2007-05-17 Thread chris and anne

Last night after I went to bed, I heard WJXL 1010 Jacksonville Beach, Fl.
LOUD, dominating the frequency, when it normally is shared by WINS and CFRB.
They were dominant for over an hour, from 12:50AM til 2:00AM when I fell
asleep. They are probably testing their new construction permit. It looks like a
new Xmit site with 6 towers, 50kw days and 30kw nites. Mentions of XL-1010,
legal ID's and format is Sporting News Radio. I would think they might be on
again tonight too. Heard on the Sony Walkman 73, Chris Johnson K4NHL

Could this have been KOA's IBOC? If so, it interferred with WHAS-840
 while
 doing
a rerun of the Kentucky Derby that I was trying to hear who won it.
Then the IBOC hash stopped ~8:20pm edt while driving down I26 back toward
 Charleston SC.

I also noted WPCI-1490's IBOC on while visiting old Syracuse NY friends in
 Greenville SC today,
the hash on 1500/1520 was much louder (and quite irritating) than their
 signal on 1490!

I tried for 1590-WABV Abbeville SC while in rainy Greenville at noon, but
 not heard on the
 car radio.

A useless bit of trivia: although WRXB's license indeed shows Saint
Petersburg Beach, there is no such city anymore. The city legally
changed its name to Saint Pete Beach in 1994, supposedly to alleviate
confusion with St. Petersburg to the east.

The FCC has no procedure to compel a station to file for a change of
city of license when the COL changes its name or merges with another
entity. Sometimes stations will file on their own accord - 870 East Las
Vegas NV becoming 870 Whitney NV, for instance - and sometimes they
won't, as witness WNCC 950 Barnesboro PA and WPCL 97.3 Spangler PA,
which are licensed to communities that haven't legally existed since
2000, when those boroughs merged to become Northern Cambria PA. WHPA
93.5 was also licensed to Barnesboro, but it moved to a completely
different community (Gallitzin) as part of a move-in to the bigger
Altoona market, unrelated to the move to Northern Cambria.

 hi to all,
i've been getting a station underneath kdka,1020khz., in
 pittsburgh
which seems to be coming from the south. my quantum qx loop is getting
the strongest signal from the south x southeast.
the audio appears to be spanish and there is a morse insertion
in the broadcast every few minutes as if being used as a break in the
commentary.the format appears to be all talk as i've not heard music, etc.
i am only 50mi. south of pittsburgh and it is most unusual to
 get
any competition between kdka and another station, unless it's wbz or cfrb
both of which are north of here.they would also be off-frequency.
is there a mexican or cuban station broadcasting with something
approaching 50kw which isn't listed in the popular am listings?

Re: [IRCA] WARR and the Palefaces

2007-04-08 Thread chris and anne
Hi allIn the late 50's-early 60's , WBAZ 1550 Kingston, N.Y. 500
watts daytime ( now dark)..used to sign off with: Not by
choice, but by order of the FCC, WBAZ now leaves the air. Tune in tomorrow
at such and such time when we begin another broadcast day... followed
by the SSB. This little station was a rocker, and sounded good, very
professional for a time..at one point, in the winter, they had only:
two deejays: Richie Allen, and Bob Badger, (who had worked at WPTR in
Albany). They each had two air shifts a day., but in the winter, it was a
very short broadcast day.about 8-9 hours I guess too much competition
from WABC, WKBW ( in early mornings and late afternoons) plus a peanut
whistle signal probably led to their demise. Chris K4NHL near

Now, here's a twist. The name Esther Blodgett rang another bell in this
elderly ding-a-ling's hollow-head, and that bell tolled for Judy Garland.
Another sho' 'nuff for the Krumudgeon ... Judy Garland played the role of
Esther Blodgett (aka Vicki Lester) in A Star is Born.

  Russ,

I listened several times to the 1230 thing. It certainly sounds like
WMRI. But the 2005-6 NRC Log just doesn't show anything like that!

It definitely does sound like WMRI, and is even followed by an AM
 860.

  Here's my theory:

I think this is a syndicated show you're hearing, possibly a Broadway
music show. It sounds like the very beginning of the clip is Dear
Broadway (something), and I hear a Sincerely, after that. So I think
the host of this syndicated show, whatever it is, is reading letters
from listeners, which happen to mention the local station they're
  listening to.

I think Blaine Thompson (who doesn't read this list, but moderates the
NRC list and can be reached by e-mail at [EMAIL PROTECTED]) knows people
at WMRI, and might be able to find out what syndicated show this
  is...at
which point you'd just have to see (sigh) which 1230 would have been
  running this, and when.

I'm curious if WOR is directional during the day to protect
another station or to put a stronger signal over a particular
 area?

WOR's original directional antenna was put in place in the mid-30s to
strengthen the signal over both New York and Philadelphia. The move north
from Carteret to Lyndhurst in 1967 altered the pattern to favor New York
with less of a Philadelphia lobe.

New stations have come on the air in WOR's nulls over the years in such a
way that WOR couldn't go back to 50 kW ND now if it wanted to. (There are
only two mainland US stations now operating 50 kW DA that could go ND just
for the asking...can anyone name them?)

We have a winner! Wish I had a prize to give out...

Yup - WBZ and WWL are former I-A clear channel facilities, and they run
directional antennas purely as a matter of choice, so they don't waste
 energy over the ocean/gulf.

Pete Taylor (who's seen on the front page of fybush.com this week, by the
way) thought I meant on 710 and named Miami and Bismarck. Nope - they
both have to be directional, and pretty sharply so, to protect older
signals (WOR, mostly, but also KCMO) on the channel.

[IRCA] WOR Towers

2007-01-11 Thread chris and anne
Hello allI was lucky enough to see the old WOR 710 NYC towers come down
today...It was carried at noon as a news item on WABC Ch. 7 NYC.quite
impressive. They even had a short interview with Tom Ray of WOR , one of our
esteemed colleagues on these lists.. I grew up listening to WOR in the 40's and
50's. It was long the station of choice by my parentswhile I was listening
to the early rock on WINS, WMCA and WABC...but for news and talk, WOR was hard
to beat ,and probably still is !!. 73 ChrisK4NHLTaylors, S.C.

KDON brings back not-so-fond memories for this old
  coot. I did my basic
training with the 2nd Inf Div at Fort Ord, Calif.,
  down the road from
Salinas in the summer of 1956, and the night DJ
  show at KDON on 1460
provided the music all 50 of us in my platoon had
  to listen to. Rock,
mostly bubble gum variety, was just getting
  started, and the song that
seemed to be played almost every hour was
  Transfusion by Nervous
  Norvous.
There also was that dratted novelty record that
  made sound bites out of
various rock hits of the day, in satirical
  newscast form .. and my
buddies in the platoon took to calling me John
  Cameron-Cameron as a
  result of that overworked treasure.
