Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-6

2015-11-07 Thread coffee_canuck
Mark touches on something very dear to my heart that I have been thinking about
a lot lately:

A.) it has been decades since I have enjoyed occasional reception from Central
and South America from Victoria B.C. With far less sophisticated receivers and
antennas.
Why is that? (And I am likely over simplifying this...)

B.) I want to hear them again or understand why I am not hearing them now.

I think, as Nick has observed in the past, is that:
1.) they are there and
2.) you need to be diligent, creative and patient... Because:

- it's not like TP DX which is largely "shooting fish in a barrel" because it
is... And

- you have to deal with all that stuff between you and the DX - where ever it
might be.

I'll always remember my first XE in 1972 and my first international DX in 1973
after I stopped convincing myself that it wasn't possible.
..
.. To be continued...

I DX while watching Nick's Fish Barrel systems and like siblings of similar
age, they rarely agree on anything.

By 1615 UTC this AM, 972 and 1566 were still in carriers.
I imagine at places like Haida Gwaii and Grayland, they're still in audio.

Am reminded of trips to the West coast of Vancouver island with 1000'
beverages... The dial would be still chock a block at 1030 AM local time.

Happy Halloween everyone and don't let the DX treats trick you.

The difference between "The Rock Works" and My QTH is that my bed is only 2

It's quickly becoming a good time to concentrate on tweaking antennas, tuners,

Re: [IRCA] TP DX 27 Sept

My entire sesh was 1305 until 1335 -

Watching the Fish-Barrel was like seeing and ebbing tide. Clearly there was a
sunrise enhancement.

Audio at times good on:
594, 603, 747, 774,828, 891, 1017, 1053, 1287, 1386, 1566...

Hints of plausible audio on 531, 558, 567, 603, 702, etc...

Not a wash out but nothing like yesterday -

How quickly we become spoilt.

Receivers: Drakes, Icoms, Kenwoods, Etons, etc.

Antenna - Wellbrook enhanced loops and flags.

Re: [IRCA] 558-Radio Fiji-- 2+1 TOH Time Pips

2015-09-10 Thread coffee_canuck
Funny! I was thinking just that -- Fiji was not exactly a nightly visitor to
our waterfront Kona condo in the 2010's...

Interestingly, in 1996, reception from all over the Pacific and Asia was mind
boggling in Kona.

What's changed are conditions and noise levels.

[IRCA] Alberta / B.C. DXer summit

2015-07-20 Thread coffee_canuck
My wife Andrea and I got to hang out with Alberta DXer Nigel Pimblett over
seasonal beers at our local Canoe Club brewery in downtown Victoria yesterday -
during unseasonably hot weather - it was around 90 degrees or 30C on the patio
beside the water.

Nigel is actually the longest running radio friend I have going back to 1975
when we were teenagers. I had the pleasure of hanging out with his younger
brother Brian one summers day some 40 years ago. Brian passed away too soon
around 8 years ago and I often think about him and his influence on the hobby..

Nick Hall-Patch (alive and kicking) is my second most venerable radio colleague
- whom I also met later in 1975... When I was 15 years old.. And he was 24 or
so at the time. He hasn't changed a bit.

Anyway - enough reminiscing!

Happy listening!

Pretty sure you do not have 99% Ethanol in your office -/
You can add that to OJ and have quite the cocktail.
Isoprop is very poisonous but deaths are rare.

99% lab grade ISO-Prop is a typical doctors office disinfectant.
Ethanol (grain alcohol) is regulated by the fraction of an ounce and only
available to licensed used; university labs, distillers etc...

The DSP filtering selections (6, 4, 3, 2 and 1 kHz) also mimic the Si4734 DSP
chip, making it seem likely that the new "Skywave" is powered by a Silicon
Labs' chip that deletes Longwave coverage in favor of the Airband, and solves
the heterodyne issue as well. As for the presence or absence of the dubious
"soft mute" function in the Skywave model, my initial impression is that that
bogus function has been ditched as well.

Whereas the Tecsun DSP Ultralights seem to be designed to feature as many of
the Si4734 chip functions as possible, the "Skywave" strips down these
functions to the bare minimum. There is no display of RSSI, S/N, temperature or
volume level. There is a very basic bar display of signal strength, but that is
it. Be thankful for the rotary volume control, though-- although it doesn't
light up the display or show you its level when changed, it is a major
functional improvement over the clunky up/ down volume buttons on the C.Crane
SWP.

Re: [IRCA] TPs??? How I Wish

2014-10-02 Thread coffee_canuck
I truly believe that this is the worst dx season in years because I have moved
to a vastly superior Dx location... That showed some incredible promise weeks
ago...
Before it all tanked...

And for that I am truly sorry.

Just at home for a few weeks recovering from a routine heart procedure to
correct a rhythm problem I have had for years...

Which will guarantee bad dx.

Re: [IRCA] DXers signing off

2013-07-01 Thread coffee_canuck
I could not possibly add anything to that eloquent offering from one of the
Worlds greatest boosters of the hobby.

I am not a gun enthusiast but the quote comes to mind...

"From my cold dead hands"

Only then will I give up on the radio hobby.

[IRCA] Testing file subscription area...

2013-05-23 Thread coffee_canuck
I am testing a file subscription feature on my website...
-- the one that creates access to 100's of ULR guides, audio files, etc.

I am looking for a volunteer to test out the system - the cost: 50 cents.

I will happily refund the 50 cents for anyone that helps me test it - the
proceeds are for a good cause - going to Ian McFarland Food bank project.

The website is DXer.ca
And subscription should be self explanatory.

If you already a subscriber (I am looking at you Gary...) please do not try to
sign up again.

Thank you all very much!
