Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] Two unIDs on 1400

2013-11-27 Thread mwhunter
WJQS in Jackson MS uses that slogan but I don't see an FM on 98.3 in MS that
would match the format. WKOZ-FM Carthage is R&B oldies and is //to WKOZ-AM.

A translator on 98.3 would have the channel number 252 in the call sign.

There is KXGF Great Falls, MT 1400 with a 98.3 translator, but it is a
sports format.

A couple of unIDs from 1400 last week, audio online at link below, and
curious if these can be solved.

1400 unID - "Oldies 1400 and @ Four Ten Three AY 98.3 (?)" in TOH ID. The
FM is a translator, but I'm still drawing blanks on this one.

 1400 unID - "AM 1400 & 103.7" also drawing blanks.

No sign of them here either. CKOC pounding with oldies and a few others in
their null. Heard at least one talker and someone forecasting a high of 47

WTFDA's list sorts well ... http://db.wtfda.org ... ideal for this kind of

Assuming the W258 portion was heard correctly, nothing //WMUX.
It's a longish list, 35+ stations, so will take time to go through...
I've had it on and nothing but music thus far.
Mostly instrumental, some vocals but more choir in nature. It sounds vaguely
hymn'ish but not classical, per se, in sounds.
It doesn't strike me as overtly Catholic, but I'm no expert...
I doubt WGNZ OH ... their web site actually has Solid Gospel playing right
now. I'd considered that a suspect...

Jim Renfrew, Holley NY

Wow, I can't believe this is the first time I've checked for TAs so far this
season (too much time being spent reviewing Perseus files from
Newfoundland!!). But Bill, Mike and Sylvain are right, there are some to be
had tonight:

909 - threshhold audio. presume BBC

936 - strong het. Iran or Spain? I'm going to guess Iran, because Spain
isn't in on other channels.

945 - weak audio. presume France

972 - weak audio, presume Germany

1089 - TaklSport

1206 - weak audio, presume France

1215 - Absolute

1377 - weak audio, presume France

1511 - het (and this is where I am currently sitting hoping for more; might
be a little low as Sylvain notes, but hard to be sure; though Crete has
been heard once before)

1521 - Saudi Arabia

Meanwhile, on the Perseus side, our November 11, 2013 files are chock full
of Argentina right now. Jean and Chuck have ferreted out Radio Nacional on
690, 730, 750, 790, 910, 960, 1130, and 1190, in some cases by paralleling
unique sfx to the known dominant on 730. A few of these are our second
Argentines on these channels. My most recent addition to the team log is
Radio Argentina on 570. As Chuck notes, we're on our way to getting them
all! Sorry that it will takes a long time to write the full report. We've
got seven days of recordings, but we're still working on Day 1. And we
still have to complete 2010 and 2011.

CIWW 1310 Ottawa was reported in MN on the NRC DX Tips list last night.
They've been doing this a lot when I've been at my Burnt River ON site, and
have also been reported by others as far as MO and MN (NE?). They were huge
here in Toronto last night.

1280 Montreal has also been reported as considerable distances, and I've
also noticed it unusually dominant at Burnt River.

But I'm not5 sure if these two are regulars at night, as I've been in
Toronto for the past week and here for two more before returning for another
round of DXing. But I am thinking of calling their engineering heads.

First, though, I need to know:

1) How far out they are making it AT NIGHT, WELL EXCEEDING THEIR NIGHT
PATTERNS, WITH GOOD SIGNALS. And HOW FREQUENTLY.

2) Are any OTHER Canadian stations doing the same?

Thanks,

directional, this should get out very well!!!

Bob Souza, GM & Owner at KCKM 1330 Monahans, Texas has agreed to do a DX
test for us DX'ers.

Here are the details:

Date: Saturday March 22nd, 2014 from 12:01AM to 12:31AM Central time
(Friday night into Saturday Morning)

The test will be be at full daytime power and pattern... 12,000 Watts Non
Directional into a 5/8th wave tower.

The test will consist mainly of morse code, sweep tones and sound effects
known to cut through the mud.

Bob prefers reports sent by email, but will accept snail mailed submissions.
If you send an email, please send MP3 attachments only, WAV files would be
too big.

Emails would be sent to b...@kckm1330.com

Snail mail reports can be sent with a CD or cassette cued up to the best
part of the reception. The mailing address is: PO Box 990, Monahans TX
79756.

Bob has said a verification post card will be sent. I encourage you to send
just a single stamp to help defray the cost of the postage. Bob didn't ask
for that, but I think it would be kind gesture.

If I have left anything out or anyone has questions, please email ME
directly.. walkerbroadcast...@gmail.com I think I covered everything.

We had a thunderstorm just before 2300 and I had to disconnect the outside

Very slight possible morse code downtown Toronto on a Tecsun ULR , but not
enough to know it isn't localized QRM. I'm on some pretty potent painkillers
from dental surgery and if I went mobile I'd be driving and DXing stoned, so
staying put.

Sorry, for the OT nature (though this thing did get DX at one time). I
recently rescued a Silvertone 5 band, 7 tube (AFAIK) console radio from my
late mother's basement. The bad thing is, the cabinet is a total pig. The
veneer is peeling, in most areas and one of the base boards fell off.
I think that the leg can be reattached. It can stand upright but it's
leaning. This radio would look cool but with the veneer shot, I'm not sure
if it can be saved. The radio part is complete but I believe dad stopped
using it because something quit on it.

See the radio at: http://www.flickr.com/groups/2110236@N20/pool/

I am out of storage space and it probably has to go. I already have two
consoles that I'm looking at having restored.

The only thing that I saw was a metal placard with 101555 stamped on it.
There is a decal on the inside about using the push button tuning.

Is this radio valuable at all?

Is it rare?

Does anyone feel that it's only option is junking it (like hauling it to the
curb?).

Thanks for any input.

A lot of radios in that era were sold to farmers who had no electricity. So
many of the radios used one or two batteries (which Sears also sold) to
power the radio and tube filaments.

A couple of unIDs from this past week/weekend...

1) Spanish on 1630. My guess is Wyoming, but I'm not ruling out Mexico.
There's two bits of spoken word, likely an ID or such, but I can't make out
what's said. It was close to my local sunrise, so could be either place.
Clip attached at:
http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?7728-1630-Spanish

2) 1010 - I am almost sure this is WCNL NH as it has a 94.7. But I am not
100 percent sure it's 94.7 that's in the clip - at time I think 104.7. And
the calls - I'm again not positive, looking for a second opinion.
Clip attached at:
http://forums.wtfda.org/showthread.php?7729-unID-1010-WCNL-NH

I have another clip of the 1300 with Toledo ads I posted yesterday. It's too
long to post. I am going to see if I can download and figure out Audacity...

With thanks to anyone who listens and/or comments...

Subject: [Amdx] unIDs from Burnt River ON

A few unIDs from a week or so ago...curious if any of these check with those
of you closer to the scene or somehow familiar with any respective
stations...

* Heard a female preacher on 1360 Sunday January 21 evening at 1719-1723 EST
who through addresses given (including mentions of NY and CT) checks to Rev.
Sandra Thigpen of Grace Moravian Church in Queens. Would WDRC CT carry this?
If not, any other candidates?

* "Rock, Roll & Remember" - the late Dick Clark's program - on 1220. I'm
guessing either WWSF in ME or WGNY in NY - or ??? - this was Sunday 21 Jan
at 4 pm.

* 1530 Yahoo Sports Radio underneath WCKY - I know of only one option - WWDX
Huntingdon TN.

Wed Jan 16 at 2125.

* Somebody on 1540 running America's Radio News, heard several different
dates before my local sunset.

* A TIS on 1620 with possible WQSF626 ID, mentioning Hudson Sound and
Baltimore island (?), also 1640 Atlantic City Int'l Airport, Mt. Holly.

* 1220 at 0819 Sat 19 Jan with NBC Sports Radio. Anybody else do this
besides WZBK NH?

* 1310 at
2042 Sat Jan 19 with country music, an announcer named Mark Fisher or
Fischer, and a Rewards Update mentioned in what sounded like a contest
reference. Stations seems to be on 1310.04, actually, but nothing apparent
on the MW Offsets list.
With thanks,
Saul ChernosBurnt River ON

WZBK was in here on February 8th with ESPN and ads for a local VW dealer.

On your recording I hear what sounds like an ad for a local tax preparation
firm "family owned since 1954" with an address that I think is 45 Marlboro
Street. There is a Marlboro Street in Keene, but I can't make out the name
of the business.

Some unIDs for better ears...

730 to west after my local sunset. I thought I heard 'NewsRadio' which
promoted me to save the recording. I don't hear that now, but there is a
mention of 730 and mostly stuff that seems unintelligible. Possibly a W.
Hoping someone can make more of this than I can.

1220 has some ads on a station that I think is WZBK in Keene NH. I had ESPN
there with strong reception across the band to ME and MA just prior to these
ads. A few weeks ago, separately, I had NBC Sports Radio on 1220. Does WZBK
actually run NBC Sports Radio as well as ESPN? Are there other possible
candidates for NBC Sports Radio? I know Mexico PA carries ESPN. NBC Sports
radio lists only WZBK. But WZBK's web site does not acknowledge this. This
recorded reception was prior to my local sunset.

Dennis Vroom reports checking KBXD web stream at BOH and no test tones. I

Had a huge tantalising surge of Mexican accordion music on 990 a few minutes

not sure.

At Burnt River ON, I have WLAC in well, doing political talk. And presume
the oldies to be NJ, and the sports talk to be Boston.

Who then is also doing political talk, mixing with all this, in 2nd to 4th

What are you all hearing on 1510 this evening?

Supposedly WZRX MS has been doing this due to an automation glitch.

I am still working on 1510. Going to try my west wire to see if the sports

Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] Public safety agencies work to meet FCC requirement | Online Athens

2011-10-25 Thread mwhunter
Narrowbanding was mandated in the 1990's and it was pretty much everyone's
belief that by requiring the manufacture of narrowband capable VHF/UHF
450-512 MHz radios that there would be little financial impact on licensees
when the time finally came to make the switch. There have been a couple of
extensions of the date (this is just the first phase to 12.5 kHz). Now the
cutover date is approaching and there are more licensees than imagined who
haven't planned or budgeted for the change of the fixed infrastructure. In
fact, quite a few of the old radios are still in use that can't make the
switch - like the widely used old Motorola upright high power Micor base
stations.

There is some degradation in coverage when reducing the bandwidth (somewhere
around 3 dB according to TIA TSB-88), so the cut is not entirely painless.

Some large agencies like NYPD are resisting the change and cite their desire
to transition to broadband. Local government budgets are tight and this is
now viewed by some as an unfunded mandate. The FCC doesn't want to extend
the deadline again - they need to accommodate more users in the available
spectrum. There's a shortage, remember?

So, you thought the DTV cutover was painful?

Tonight, around 7:20 PM, as we were leaving the Dairy Queen in

most part, with a faint orange/red around the edges. It then started to go
green as it fell behind the trees. It was gone by the time we cleared the
trees on Highway 53. We were in an SUV so if it made any sound, I didn't
hear it. It was as bright as maybe negative 2 magnitude or so. This is
the second one I have spotted this year. I also saw the one back on May 29th

Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] unID 1510 Oldies in again tonight - HELP!

2010-12-03 Thread mwhunter
Paul:

You are correct, this is not likely to be WRNJ. I live 26 miles from
Hackettstown and can't hear them here. They run a 10 Watt translator on 92.7
in Washington Boro, NJ which is 22 miles from here and which I do hear
perfectly.

Their ID is generally with a male announcer "Oldies 1510 WRNJ" and they
often throw in "Thank you for listening to your local radio station." They
do have a singing weather jingle which is simply "WRNJ Weather" with women
singers. That was the pattern tonight at the time you mentioned along with a
string of local ads.

At 2235 they aired a singing jingle simply "WRNJ" with women singers.

Their music tends toward the sixties-seventies.

I hope this narrows down your search a little.

For what it is worth, I read today that over 400 AM stations now run FM
translators.

Paul,

I'm reasonably sure that it was a "w" call. It did not seem to match
NJ's stream, so could be Wabash, IN, or Ohio on late, or maybe a recent
format change.

I really cannot believe that others are not hearing this. I solved an
unID on 830 in 2009 by Googling it and found that a station in Cortland,
Ohio had been on late for months but I did not see where others were
hearing it. Maybe you, Kaz and John Rieger are the only folks that read
my posts, LOL.

Here are the "W" "oldies / rockers" from Barry's list.

When I can DX, after getting home from seeing her, I still hear
the
oldies under WLAC but Neil is right, conditions here have not
been great
and WLAC is one of the hardest for me to null.

If this "mystery" station is still on at night and you want to
compare
to what I have heard, it should be easy. At :27 and :57, I seem
to hear
a female singing the calls (seemingly every hour) and at about
:15, I
hear a male saying something like "AM 15-10 ." I never hear
what I
would call a LID with city / state.

Thanks, you all!

Dave in Indy

PS: Can someone "crosspost" to the NRC and see if anyone there
has been
hearing it? I fired up the Globaltuner receiver "SE Wisconsin"
and
could hear it there, too, under WLAC. dh

Dave, I still think that you may be hearing KMSD. They are
definately
more oldies than classic rock. I should be DXing this weekend
(sick now
so haven't gone out to DX this week and noting no one is exited
about
cx) and can usually hear them if you want to compare notes. 73

Re: [IRCA] [Amdx] Spanish unIDs 940 IDed + Solid Gospel

2011-01-16 Thread mwhunter
Saul:

WNRG uses Solid Gospel ID from time to time. There is also a religious
station in Smithfield, VA (WKGM) on 940 that is 10 kW days 3.1 kW night
usually in here around 1600 EST. Solid Gospel is one of the Salem networks
and affiliates can be full time or overnight.

At present I am listening to gospel music on 940 with a choir. I believe
that is WADV ground wave signal - waiting but no TOH ID.

Last night I listened to most of the Packers-Falcons game on a Westwood 1
affiliate on 580 under/over WHP Glenn Beck. I believe the football was on
WCHS, but no local ID's or ads during the game breaks. Really frustrating.

Jon in St. Catharines ON listened and heard "La Explosiva" IDs in all three
clips, making this not a Mexican but WCND in Shelbyville KY. 250 watts
daytime, 10 night. This has not been a regular, so either my n-s antenna is
well positioned for the station's 10 watts, or they had an errant
night-switch issue.

On Clip 'b' I hear another station that's been a bit of a nemesis for me
this season. Solid Gospel Radio (also IDs as Solid Gospel Music). This coule
be WADV Lebanon PA, WNRG Grundy VA, or WECO Wartburg TN. It's been a
struggle to get local content. I've heard WADV and WNRG from Burnt River
before, but only have WECO in Toronto, so have been after that one. I
suspect WNRG in most of these cases, as it's been at night, and WNRG seems
to get out the best per others' reports; and a year ago I heard it a slew of
times. Nothing IDable here in this clip, but worth reminding all that a
Solid Gospel is waiting there on 940; some may need whatever it turns out to
be.

Again, my thanks to Jon.

I'm guessing Mexico for each. But my Spanish is not so hot, to be generous
about it.

As soon as I sent my message what is apparently WADV ran a local paving
company ad with a 717 area code and Hershey address. No ID though,
