Re: [IRCA] Local Radio Is Getting Tuned Out.

2011-11-02 Thread ng0g
Mike,

I am fortunate here in Iowa. Boone has KWBG. I get High School sports, they
tell you what the school lunches are. In the morning they call the one of the
local breakfast places to find out what they are serving. They have some
syndicated programming, but you can walk over to the station and there are real
people there.

However I know this is a rarity. Most of TV turns me off, it feels like dumb
and dumber. Tuning across the FM dial it feels like there are perhaps 4 or 5
stations cloned over and over. In the day time I listen to KWBG, KWMT, or WHO.
At night it is CFZM aka AM740 from Toronto.

I am puzzled by radio and tv anymore. I am nearing retirement. My kids are
grown, my house is paid for, and I have more disposable income then at any
point in my life. Yet most radio and tv programming seems aimed at another
generation.

Stephen

Thanks for posting this! While we all lament the continuing decine of
local radio, the article really begs the question of whether it really
matters.
More and more folks listen to national shows; and when a local affiliate
drops a national show such as Hannity or Rush for a local talk show, there
are complaints.
We get our local news, weather, scores, obits, closings more and more
online through local websites, sites of local broadcast companies, and
sites of local papers and pseudopapers created for the net.
Local ma and pa businesses, long which have been the boon for local radio,
are being replaced by chains because, let's face it, a Best Buy or HHGregs
can sell appliances and electronics for less than Ma and pa; and that's,
unless you need the service locals provide, few care.
So, as the stations seek national advertising, the programming must go in
that direction.
The problem becomes where does the next generation of hosts emerge from?
These may too come from non-traditional sources such as the internet.
Sure, local radio is dying; but, thanks to the internet, phone apps and
other electronic innovations, I doubt listeners, other than for nostalgia,
will care all that much as they grow comfortable with the changing
choices.
And, for efficiency, the new choices are better and giving me greater
information and entertainment as well as open things, such as ondemand
programs and podcasts, which were mere fantasy a couple of decades back.

Bible study has torn my life apart and remade it. That is to say that God,
through his Word, has done so.

The construction crew ran a water pipe under my road today so I can hook up
to county water. Since the main water main was on the other side of the
road they used a air-pressured "torpedo" to push through a horizontal hole
for the copper tube to go through, about six feet down. All it took was a
case of beer and they kindly tied a coax to the tube, so now I have the
ability to run a longwire on the other side of the road where there is
endless farm acreage. They even hid it just at the edge of the tree line so
the actual farm owner won't see it or be vulnerable to town lawn mowing. I
think this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I was glad to be home today
to make this happen.

Here is a code challenge on 990khz.

While listening to KRMO 990 on 9/16 I noted five
occurances of "code" at top of hour and the half
hour.  I hesitate to use the word "Morse
Code" beause the code character is not a known
alpha/numeric or punctuation mark or other character that
I am aware of.  The code heard is .._.. (dit dit
dah dit dit) sent at very high speed.  You need to
slow it down to hear the individual dits and the
dah.

Does anyone know the source or the
purpose?  At the same time the code was heard CKGM
was strong, CBW was there but nulled, KRMO was in/out and
WGSO was also heard.  The character heard is not the
same as the familiar Cuban RR.

I can send
anyone interested in hearing this a short audio clip.

Rick,

I lived in Berkeley about 4 blocks from the campus back then. You could buy
Tshirts with "The Play" completely diagrammed on them within days. I've not
been able to hear KGO here in Iowa or any of the Bay Area stations and I have
tried. As close as I have come has been the 1140 station in Sacramento KHTK.

Re: [IRCA] 30 years of skywave DXing

2011-04-14 Thread ng0g
IRCA,

I was always fascinated by the radios in our house when I was very little. We
got a new one when I was about 6 or 7, and instead of sitting up on the top of
the refrigerator it was on an end table in the living room, where I could reach
it. I turned it on and stumbled across the Indy 500 in full swing. I thought
this was the coolest thing in the world. A couple of years later I got a
crystal radio kit from the Cub Scout catalog and put it together as well as my
8 year old fingers could. IT WORKED!!! I heard KOLD, all of about 12 miles
from my house, but I had been bitten, was heavily infected, and would never
recover. When I was about 10 I spotted a neighbor hauling a huge wooden Philco
out to the curb. I rescued it and with a lot of advice from my Dad replaced
some of the caps. I loved that radio. A very kind telephone lineman gave me a
partial reel of wire for antennas. I did not realize until years later, what a
gift he had given me. (several hundred feet of co!
pperwield, something I could never afford back then). I soon had wire going
everywhere. I used to wait until my parents went to bed, then quietly close my
bedroom door, and roll up the throw rug to prevent light from leaking out under
the door. Then turn on the light, and DX half the night. I could never get
any of my friend interested, so it was a pretty solitary pursuit, which did not
bother me much. I am now 64. I have had my Ham License for over 30 years and
am creeping up on 300 countries confirmed on the Ham bands. But I still chase
DX on the BCB and enjoy it just as much as I did when I was 10. I can just
afford better equipment now.

[IRCA] off topic radio question

2009-01-21 Thread ng0g

IRCA,

This is off topic so answer me off list please. I am asking here because I
know that some members order stuff straight from Japan. In the early 80's you
could buy a sort of goose neck boom mic for your vhf/uhf radio in the car or
truck. The mic mounted on the same screw that held in the sun visor, and it
came with a remote push to talk switch that mounted on the floor shift. Does
anyone know if this kind of thing is still made by some after market company.
I have have, in the past seen a copy or two of the Japanese Ham Radio
publication CQ and it has tons of stuff for sale that you never see here.

Thanks,
Steve

Gang,

I am in Boone, Iowa
I woke up for a little while in the middle of the night last night (not unusual
as I get older) and was listening to WTAM at about 0030 CDST. WTAM is usually
very strong, but last night they drifted in and out. On one of the outs, I
heard a station that I thought had "GG" in their call, and said the they were in
North Carolina. I figured that knowing the frequency, and state, I would able
to find them this morning. No. Any ideas.

IRCA,

I happened to tune to 570 last night and the frequency was dominated by CUBA
CMDC, Radio Reloj. I have heard them frequently when visiting Tennessee, to
only very weakly in Iowa. Last night they were as loud as some of the locals.

I can hear an odd buzzing that just started about the time night time iboc did,

Re: [IRCA] The DX Crystal Ball

Les,

Well thought out, good paper. Thanks.

My crystal ball thinks that AM and maybe FM too, will die of terminal boredom.
As time goes by, with a few exceptions, it seems that there are only 4 or 5
stations cloned and repeated over and over again across the dial.
