Congratulations on another amazing catch, Tim! I can see the carrier here
in Iowa, but I'm not getting any audio.

Happy New Year to you and yours my friend.

I saw carriers on 774 and 747, but not much else. It seems like I could
hear just about everything out of Korea (2850 was +10 for a while) but not
much of anything else.

Strange morning.

Hello everyone.

I scored my first MW catch out of Korea this morning when HLCA 972 popped
up out of the splatter at 1305 UTC. They weren't strong for very long, but
they were nice enough to give me a little intelligible audio before
disappearing. I will consider this an early Christmas present.

[IRCA] This morning's TP loggings from Central Iowa

2018-11-02 Thread tim rahto
Hello everyone,

We had another great morning for Trans-Pacific DX here in the Midwest. i
started listening around 1120 UTC, and found strong signals from Japan on
774, 693, 666, and 747. 828 out of Osaka might have been the loudest of
all, but I couldn't separate them from WCCO in Minneapolis.

I spent a lot of today reviewing the recordings from this morning, and
managed to hear some very faint chimes at the top of the hour on 1134 kHz.
the audio is rough at best, but you can hear them just before the top of
the hour, and then again in a different key a little later. I think it
might be KBS, but I could use some advice on this one.

https://youtu.be/6itzpsB8ENg

CNR 11 (probably) on 1098 also made another appearance with that ridiculous
signal I've seen all this week. Considering the solar forecast this weekend
is calling for storms, I guess we better enjoy it while it lasts. Here's a
clip of them pushing the signal meter up to an S8 on the Perseus.

https://youtu.be/VJ27HGaTWdY

I saw a carrier on 702, and hoped that it might be Australia, but nothing
ever came of it. Can't win them all I guess!

Hi Steve,

That list is from Dan Ferguson's swskeds mailing list. He does a great job
of compiling AOKI, HFCC, and a few others into a spreadsheet and a Perseus
compatible userlist.

BTW, I am using your plans to make an H frame for my Wellbrook AL 100LN. It
should be finished on Saturday.

[IRCA] This morning's TP-DX from Central Iowa

2018-10-31 Thread tim rahto
Hello everyone,

First off, thank you to everyone for their kind words about yesterday's
recordings, as well as your encouragement. I really appreciate all of it.

This morning's conditions were still very good, but not up to yesterday's.
There were multiple Japanese stations audible, including 693, 774, and 837,
but their signals were down substantially.

I was just about to get on with the rest of my day when 1098 went from a
carrier to an S8 around 1215 UTC, right around local sunrise. Here's a
recording of this morning's reception.

https://youtu.be/SKmj3uJwxaM

After navigating through the China Radio website, I was able to match up
this morning's recordings with their Tibetan service. The frequency offset
(or lack thereof) on the signal also matches up with what myradiobase.de
has listed for the CNR 11 transmitter out of Golmud, so I think its been
confirmed. According to Google maps, it's 6992 miles from transmitter to
receive antenna. How crazy is that??

Thanks to Tim Tromp for his offset suggestion, and to Chris Kadlec for his
help with navigating the China Radio website.

[IRCA] TP DX from Central Iowa

2018-10-30 Thread tim rahto
Hello everyone,

I picked a good morning to drag myself out of bed before dawn. The band was
full of carriers, some of which turned into remarkably strong signals. All
loggings were made between 1030 UTC and 1230 UTC from Luther, Iowa using a
SAL-30 antenna and a Perseus receiver.

Here's a rundown of the highlights:

NHK 2, 774 kHz. I have never heard Japan on MW before now, and I may never
hear it this well again. They were giving an English lesson with a
Halloween theme that peaked at just under S9. || to 693. i have 747 kHz
down in my notes, but I am not sure if it was parallel or not.

774 kHz: https://youtu.be/QOfVVdXwypU

693 kHz: https://youtu.be/Er7qoMjylws

774 kHz (made about an hour after the first clip):
https://youtu.be/flTMaUhyTms

CNR 11 (?), 1098 kHz: I have caught a trace of this one before, but I've
never heard it this well. I think it is China, but I am not positive on
this one as I couldn't find an audible parallel station, or an accessible
online feed. If anyone can provide any insight into this one I'd appreciate
it.
