Didn't get any books from you.

Chuck,

First. you went for the "Heard All Iran" in Newfoundland. Then you moved on
to get close "Heard All Argentina". Working off the left coat, you seemed to
be trying for "Heard All New Zealand" from Rockworks. Now it looks like you
are trying to do the same with the Philippines.

Soon you will be running out of foreign DX targets. What's next

Jim Renfrew, Clarendon NY

So here's the rundown of new stations I heard on 1560:

FEB 17 2135 EST VEN Radio Nacional de Venezuela NEW
FEB 18 1727 EST OH WTNS OH Coshocton
FEB 18 1729 EST UNID "Real Country"
FEB 18 1840 EST KY WKDO Liberty
FEB 19 0220 EST SD KKAA Aberdeen "Family Radio"
FEB 20 1743 EST UNID Religion program with North Carolina address
FEB 20 1747 EST UNID Menard's ad
FEB 20 1820 EST WV WFSP Kingwood
FEB 20 2115 EST IL WBYS Canton NEW
FEB 21 1743 EST VA WSBV South Boston NEW
FEB 22 1757 EST OH WWYC Toledo CSN International NEW
FEB 22 1633 EST UNID "The Country Road" with Father Joe Beighner
FEB 22 1927 EST IA KLNG Council Bluffs
FEB 27 1730 EST NY WFME New York "Family Radio" NEW

That's five new ones, plus a bunch of relogs. A total of 43 stations have
been heard on 1560. I'm especially pleased with the Venezuela station. It
only appeared on that one night.

The Father Joe Show has me mystified. I can't seem to connect it to any
station's schedule, and Father Joe's website is out of date, with the
"Radio" tab not working. It appears that he retired several years ago.
He's in Baltimore and they run his program at 8am and 8pm on Sundays on
WPOC-FM in Baltimore (old shows, I would think). This leads me to suspect
WKIK in LaPlata MD, but WKIK doesn't reveal anything on its website. The
e-address links for WPOC personnel don't seem to work, either.

I have a couple of clips, one from today, 10th April around 0503UTC,
while the other is from 7th April. and is probably too long but
there is mention of MA during it as well Does it sound like the
audio from the Military museum in MA?? The YL may actually be another
station when you hear it.

2014-01-22 Thread R. Colin Newell
I tuned from 1525 to 1530 -- on the lower part of the band from 530 through
980 --
Nothing heard - no hets, whispers, voices or anything but domestics...

Like Nick and the gang said: I need to commit to a slightly longer session
- doing a single sweep over a minute or two
does not really represent anything...

Also book marking Nick's Fish Barrel for some indicators of where the
action is.

I guess the "Death of am radio" actually means the end of the golden age of
radio and not the actual signing off and going silent of all the stations
currently on the air. Nothing lasts forever - good or bad. Who knows what

 From Medium Wave Circle:

http://radioworld.com/article/am-searches-for-sustainability/221162

interesting for a number of reasons, not least the grand old name of
Beverage appearing among those consulted. An interesting take is the
strength of minority broadcasting, and whether that is the wave of the
future.

The American Spectator article referenced is a good read

someone who loves AM radio.

  best wishes,

Yes, maybe is what I like to see posted. We can determine a groundwave area
fairly well, but skywave varies in intensity & different areas are favored on
different nights. I think we can get skywave from at least as close as 30
miles, as I can hear some fading on KSTP-1500 at night, even though they beam
the equivalent of close to 100 kw my way. 73, George S., MN

Some unIDs for better ears...

730 to west after my local sunset. I thought I heard 'NewsRadio' which promoted
me to save the recording. I don't hear that now, but there is a mention of 730
and mostly stuff that seems unintelligible. Possibly a W. Hoping someone can
make more of this than I can.

1220 has some ads on a station that I think is WZBK in Keene NH. I had ESPN
there with strong reception across the band to ME and MA just prior to these
ads. A few weeks ago, separately, I had NBC Sports Radio on 1220. Does WZBK
actually run NBC Sports Radio as well as ESPN? Are there other possible
candidates for NBC Sports Radio? I know Mexico PA carries ESPN. NBC Sports
radio lists only WZBK. But WZBK's web site does not acknowledge this. This
recorded reception was prior to my local sunset.

Saul - the default wav file format is going to give you a file size
somewhat near your 2.5 MB. You can choose a wav format in Audacity that
will be smaller but I wouldn't put too much time into getting wav's
working - why not set up mp3? Many of us are satisfied with 32 kb mp3
which is only 4 KB per second or 120 KB for your half minute clip.

Thanks to all who have commented re 1300 mystery with Toledo ads.

I managed to get Audacity up and running...and narrowed down the clip. It's
.wav . I have no idea why the file size is 2.5+ mb for a half-minute clip. For
that reason I have omitted the two ads, which are as follows: The Toledo Free
Press and Dunn Chevy in nearby Oregon and Navarre. Then a live basketball game.
I am almost sure it's NCAA but not positive. I don't think it's the Buckeyes.
It was Saturday night, the 15th. A player's name seems like Davis Llewellyn,
but nothing checks. Toledo is not within local range of Mount Vernon OH (near
Columbus) or Cleveland OH, and Grand Rapids MI surfaces a bit later with its
own news-talk programming. WXRL Lancaster NY is also in.

Any thoughts?

With thanks,

Noise floor was slightly lower when the wind had abated somewhat...but not
ever as low as we've seen it on previous (windy) trips.

I'm not sure about the charging/discharging...doesn't that take the form of
a rapid built up of clicking noise? Sort of aPP! None of that
present...perhaps because we had static drains on both ends of the wires.

This was just an ever-present background; between -70 and -80 at 6 kHz BW..

When I find time to produce the video and tabulate the data you'll be able
to see/hear what we ran into.

BTW: Just checked back to some previous recordings: -110 was not unusual for
the same Beverage set-up.

PLEASE
CORRECT ANY ERRORS ... AND CONSIDER THIS THE ***ALMOST FINAL WORD*** ON
TONIGHT’S
SCHEDULED BIG CHICAGO OFF-AIR EVENT

670 WSCR,
720 WGN and 780 WBBM, all in Chicago, are scheduled to go off-air this coming
Saturday morning (late tonight), from 2-5am CST.

A few
additional DX opportunities have been scheduled or will be otherwise available
in
light of this:

Scott Fybush
reports he has confirmed with 670 KBOI in Boise ID that it will do some limited
testing during the Chicago silent period. KBOI will maintain regular programming
but will drop in Morse code IDs at about 1:08 MST (3:08 EST) and 1:38 MST (3:38
EST), using 50 kW ND ***ONLY*** during the code IDs. I strongly recommend
monitoring 670 a few minutes before and after each of these times. No QSL info
as of yet.

Paul Walker
reports KOTZ 720 Kotzebue Alaska will test for 30 minutes during the off-air
period. The test will consist of sweep tones, Morse code, sound effects and
other announcements and is scheduled for -0030 LOCAL TIME. Kotzebue is
rather
close to Russia. I have not yet determined its time zone. Alaska has several, I
believe.

QSL info for
KOTZ: Please include location, receiver, antennae as well as a log of what you
heard and when, and comments on signal quality. Chief Engineer Pierre Lonewolf
is particularly interested in the results from this skywave skip as KOTZ is
evaluating
its signal, and a favor deserves a favour in return. Send a SASE with your
report

Interesting evening. Signals not seemingly huge, but we've managed S Africa 657

Canary RNs running separate programming from ones in Spain. Helped me settle on
knowing which one to put into my logbook for 621. India AIR stations do
regular sign-ons after UTC at varying times, and 1143 was rather strong,
also a couple other channels, but nowhere what it's been in previous years here.

Re: [IRCA] (no subject)

2011-04-10 Thread Tim Hills

Hi Terry,

I've seen designs using bundled rods before and his may very well
perform as described.

But his "Theory" of how and why ferrite based antennas work?

Before I was halfway through reading the link I had to get out my
tinfoil hat. I have to admit that citing Tesla, Moray and "free energy"
sets off a Kook alert for me so bear that in mind. He should read more
of Tesla's early writings when he was still honest enough to admit that
he could design, build and use his devices he had no clue why they worked.

What strikes me most is the misunderstanding of Field Theory. As pointed
out in another thread a tuned loop, air or ferrite, does effect the
local field for some distance greater than it's diameter and can be
partially absorbed in the windings. Any EM field has electrical and
magnetic components, if they didn't generators wouldn't work nor would
the lowly transformer which takes electrical energy, converts it to
magnetic and back again. A loop antenna with a pickup winding can be
treated as an unshielded transformer with it's primary excited by the EM
that it's resonant with instead of an applied current. In a ferrite rod
antenna neither the coil or the rod alone are the antenna, they interact
with each other to make the functioning whole in a predictable manner
using standard Field Theory .

Doesn't matter if the duck is black or white, you can't tell just from
it's quack and both taste the same rubbed with sage and stuffed with
rice dressing after being baked at 350 ;)

The idea that a ferrite rod 8" long is going to capture "photons" in the
MW band provoked an expletive that my Lady heard. She wondered if I was
shopping for fertilizer online...

True, one of the fundamental ides of Quantum Mechanics is that
Electromagnetic energy, radio frequencies or Gamma rays, behave like
waves sometimes and particles at other times. Design an experiment to
detect light as a particle and you'll find particles, an experiment to
find light waves will detect waves. In reality light is neither until
it's detected and it's probably something else entirely anyway. Light
going through a diffraction grating or properly sized dual slit behaves
as if it were waves, in a photomultiplier tube or a larger dual slit it
acts like particles.

The problem with looking for particles (photons) at say 1000KHz is that
to detect a photon the detector has to be bigger than the photon. With
light that's easy, you can read this because the rods and cones in your
eyes undergo chemical reactions because they are much bigger than a
photon of light, unless your blind and using a reader but I think my
point is clear.

If Mr. Grahm were using a ferrite rod 300 meters or longer I might give
some credibility to his "Photon interaction" ideas. Even at microwave
frequencies where it would be practical I don't know of any practical
uses offhand.

The Electron spin stuff? The magnetic fields within a ferrite rod even
in the strongest EM fields is nowhere near enough to flip an Electron.
Why do you think they need such gawdawful powerful magnets to do an MRI?

I'd think spending more time looking into the properties of the ferrite
rods themselves would be more enlightening. The composition of the mix,
grain size, binding agent, how much pressure and what temperature was
used during forming all contribute to the rod's properties as much as
it's physical dimensions. A 1/2" diameter rod 8" long may work best at
ELF or HF depending on the above factors. Using them outside their
designed parameters in resonant circuits can cause unexpected results as
I have learned the hard way.

One reason I prefer air core loops for DXing, air is the same at ELF or SHF.

2010-08-01 Thread Chernos Saul

There's been a fair bit of talk on various DX lists about 1220 CHSC and what
stands to happen.

The only recent precedent I can think of - unless something else low-key has
happened of this sort that I'm unaware of - is CHOI 98.1 in Quebec City. Its
licence was revoked for issues related to inapporpriate remarks made on air,
and what was deemed to be management's relative inaction. I can't recall the
exact details offhand and don't want to risk introducing error into this
discussion by trying to recall (and I don't have time now to do the research -
I'm sure it's all up on the web in various places). But it was hugely
controversial. CHOI appealed, the case was going through the courts, there was
even an attempt at political intervention, and then - somehow, again I can't
recall the exact details) - the station transfered to new ownership and was
allowed to continue.

Bottom line here is whether or not CHSC will sign-off for good on Aug 31/Sept.
1.

The safe answer is that time will tell. But matters can always get complicated,
so I'll pull a possible scenario that occurs to me:

The CHOI Situation - CHSC delays the situation as long as possible, and while
the CRTC has not renewed the licence thus effectively killing the media
property it's always possible that somehow this could get reversed if the right
political or political appeals are made. Everyone would win - the Niagara
region would retain a local station (hee hee, actually it would gain one), any
jobs at the station would likely remain intact and more likely there would be a
few new hires, the current owners wowuld go away quietly, and there'd be a new
functional business. DXers hindered by the continuing presence of CHSC would be
the only losers - I'm greedily hoping for at least one full season with only
Cleveland to null. DXers like Pat martin, who use CHSC as a beacon to indicate
good eastern cx would be winners.

CHSC could also appeal to federal Cabinet (really, the political party in
power, the Conservatives) and win - it would help if they have any clout, say
having in the past donated large sums of money to the party or helping with a
local electoral campaign - in other words, if they've made political friends.

It's also crossed my mind that CHSC might take the pirate approach. Just keep
broadcasting till they're forced off. Maybe scream about freedom of speech.
They do have a history of not paying close attention to CRTC orders.

My gut sense is this operation is extremely cash-strapped or for other reasons
not in fact a viable radio operation. So if I were gambling I'd put a decent
bit of money on their going for good on Aug. 31-Sept. 1. But I would not bet my
financial future on it.

One more task for me for August - to compile a hit-list for 1220. Cleveland
isn't an easy null. CHSC has actually been the lesser of the two main pests on
1220. But this will definitely help. I've had a few good catches there - like
Boissevain MB. Maybe I'll finally get Mexico...if...

What did Santa leave under the tree for you? Santa was kind enough to
leave a Grunding G8 for me. I've had fun playing with it so far today. However,
the beep is driving me crazy. I guess I need to read the book to figure out how
to make it go away.
Merry Christmas everyone!

CNET just published what they consider the 30 biggest tech flops of
the decade just ending:

Two of them are radio related: IBOC (HD) radio and satellite radio.

They also have a list of the 20 most innovative consumer electronics

but sadly none of them are radio related, sure would have been different
if there had been a 1920's version of this list:)

Frank,

You probably could, I like to use insulated wire myself. It is covered
so there is less noise it and it lasts much longer in our weather. To
buld a EWE, you need coax feeding it, a matching transformer, a good
