Re: [IRCA] AM Broadcasters affected by RFI Issues

2015-12-31 Thread John Sampson
I couldn't agree more with what this article says. Also, Les, you're right on
the mark concerning fixes; they won't (and probably can't) happen.
Unfortunately, solid state and digital devices are inherent noise generators
and now that these are out of Pandora's Box, there's no putting them back in
(and any "hope" for relief left in the box is non-existant).

When we moved to Grand Rapids in 1998, there was virtually no electronic noise
generators in our house and DXing was great. DSL arrived a few years ago and
the noise level rise was noticeable. About the same time, we had our kitchen
redone (with all the solid state noise generators), the power company installed
a remote meter reader and a few other noise gremlins appeared. Now, in order
to do any significant DXing, I have to turn off the modem and computer, unplug
the iPad and iPhone chargers, turn off all of the transformer-fed lights,
throw a couple of breakers to kill kitchen appliances and light dimmers and
take a few more steps. Whee!!

Our place in Arizona is worse. There's a 24 hour buzz, which seems to be
generated by the power company and kills all but local signals during the day.
Night is a bit better but I still have to power down the modem, computer, etc.
When we first moved here (1996), I was able to have some very good DXing (no
electronic noise then). No longer the case!

Enough grousing; I was fortunate enough to start DXing in the noise free early
1950s. Those days are long gone but they certainly were fun! - John

In many areas there are small utility companies without enough people to help
solve noise issues often created by their power lines. Pacific Power here is
pretty good, but the ones on the South Coast are different issue.

Walt,

Just because a person lives in a rural area doesn't mean the location is noise
free. Like here on the Northern Oregon Coast, I never used to have noise, but i
do now. I am hoping a Ham operator moving in this coming Spring, that monitors
500 khz, we can find where it is coming from. I have a friend who lives in
rural Coos County that cannot listen to the AM band in most areas he drives.

On the bright side, as energy becomes increasingly scarce we will need to stop
wasting it in poorly designed wall warts and power supplies - energy radiated
as broadband RFI is energy lost forever that could have been used in an energy

[IRCA] AM Broadcasters affected by RFI Issues

2015-12-30 Thread Les Rayburn

From Radio World.

AM Broadcasters affected by RFI issues: AFCCE Symposium Examines AM
Broadcast Band Woes

. AM broadcasters are calling upon the FCC to help reduce man-made RFI,
which is negatively impacting their businesses.

Pressure like this can only help. But the reality is that electronics
manufacturers, power companies, and similar industries all employ
highly-paid lobbyists making regulation and oversight difficult for the
FCC to pursue.

DXing from my neighborhood has become so bad that I'm seriously
considering portable operation using SDR's to record TOH's in
radio-quiet locations as the only viable means of continuing in the
hobby. RFI comes from every house, including my own despite intensive
efforts to reduce or eliminate it.
