[IRCA] Apollo 13

2012-11-03 Thread Ira Elbert New III

Here's a question for those of you who are a lot smarter than I am...I'm
watching Apollo 13 during the commercial breaks tonight while the ALA - LSU
game is on. They show a couple of scenes in the movie where Jim Lovell's wife
is listening to the transmissions from the spacecraft. It's a grey speaker,
with a NASA logo on it, but it never appears to be attached to a radio. Anybody
know anything about this? Did the families have access to the communications?
It puzzles me every time I see it.

Hate to make you feel older than you are, Ira, but I know you were older than
six.  The last mission in the Apollo program was Apollo 18, which docked with
Soyuz in the summer of 1975.  I mention that because it's the ONLY Apollo
mission that I remember watching on TV back when it was happening.  :)

know about the material being broadcast, but I do have fun reading over the

Re: [IRCA] Apollo 13

2012-11-03 Thread Stephen Ponder
Ira,

I work at NASA/Johnson Space Center. Back when I was in the Mission Ops
Directorate (MOD), the NASA Branch Chiefs had a direct feed of the prime
Space-to-Ground link (SG1, I think) from the Mission Control Center (MCC) to
their offices. That way they could listen to real-time audio during Shuttle
missions.

If I recall correctly, it was a coax cable from a wall plate to a grey box on
the cabinet behind their desk. The box had a volume control knob on the side.
The speakers looked like they had been around from the Apollo, maybe even
Gemini days.

Maybe the families of the Apollo 13 astronauts were given similar audio access
over twisted pair cable via the phone lines to their homes in Nassau Bay, which
is right across the road (NASA Road1) from NASA/JSC??

OK, now I feel old.

I remember Gemini launches and spacewalks not to mention staying up late
to watch Armstrong step off the ladder and blow his line.

Re: [IRCA] Apollo 13

2012-11-04 Thread Ira Elbert New III

I would like to think my Parents had me in front of the TV to watch
Armstrong and Aldrin, but I never asked them. I remember watching a daytime
Apollo launch at school when they wheeled in a TV on a rolling cart. Today, we
can just show things from a computer or television feed on a screen in our
classrooms.
I also remember staying home from school to watch the first launch of the
Space Shuttle. I have it on an audio cassette somewhere. We were in Cape
Canaveral for the last Shuttle launch and I have that on a video tape that I
shot. A scanner beneath the camera provides background audio with a feed from
Mission Control.
