[IRCA] DXpedition after IRCA convention

2019-03-01 Thread Bruce Portzer
A loose plan is being developed for a DXpedition to legendary Grayland
Washington after the Seattle IRCA convention in September. While the
dates have not been finalized, it is likely that DXpeditioners will be
there some time between September 8th & 14th. As some know, our former
DX spot (the Grayland Motel) was sold, renamed the Breakwater Inn, and
is undergoing tremendous renovation.  The renovation will be completed
in the next few months. We of course don't know if it will remain a
fairly quiet site for DXing but are assuming so for now. We plan to
erect various antennas aimed across the Pacific and hope the approaching
solar minimum will give us a great post-convention DXpedition. For more
information as plans solidify, contact me (Bruce Portzer) at

Re: [IRCA] CONVENTION INTENTION

2018-09-14 Thread R. Colin Newell
Ironically, I have discovered that my front yard (street facing) is
significantly quieter than my back yard -- that said, my NW Flag literally
butts up against the NE corner of the house so.
(We have no above ground utilities on our street which is something of a
blessing obviously!)

Wellbrook antennas strung up in street side 70' spruce trees as doing way
better -- currently figuring out how to get a NW flag into the front yard
with the "business" end
most isolated from surrounding "buzz-warts..."

It seems that we all spend as much energy fighting noise sources as we do
listening -
Thankfully the worst offender in the neighbourhood is a solar array that
puts out crap every few hundred khz from 14 Mhz through into VHF.
I have had e-mail back and forth with the "engineer" that builds and
deploys these DC to AC conversion systems and insists that there are no "RF
components..."
in his system. uhm... anything that converts DC to AC or vice versa
utilizes a potential "RF" component or side effect if not well designed.

2018-09-14 Thread Patrick Martin
John,

I have the same issue here. A really wonderful area to DX the Pacific has
really been downgraded with a lot of noise. I think most is man made noise in
houses. It used to be I could fight the power line noise as Pacific Power would
come out and repair the issues, but with so many devices in homes, the noise is
a lot worse than it used to be. I spend a lot of time either DXing FM or stream
radio/tv from all over. Add in a wifi radio.

Re: [IRCA] CONVENTION INTENTION

2018-09-13 Thread John Sampson
To continue . . . and perhaps some burnout. Also, I well remember the IRCA/NRC
split and the associated rancor, much of which was (unnecessarily) directed at
several NRC members, who I knew very well. Even though I’ve been an IRCA
member since the split (only for the DX info), my loyalties have been with the
NRC. Consequently, I have never had much fun interest in the IRCA or, in
particular, attending any of its conventions. I’ve attended several NRC
conventions in the past and have enjoyed them. However, I’ll probably not
attend any more conventions, just not interested. I must say, tho, that the
joint convention you helped host in Minneapolis a couple of years ago was a
real winner and a great final convention for me. Sorry for the rambling (I
could go on and on but figure it is enough) and hope this helps. - John

This is an unofficial request for planning information, generated as a result
of the 2018 DX Convention in St. Charles MO.

If you couldn't make St. Charles, your response to the following queries will
help future planning, so please respond; either via this reflector, or
privately to me if you wish.

But DO reply! A poor response to this inquiry will be a signal in itself, so
please take 24 seconds to answer this. All you have to do is return this
e-mail, listing the relevant numbers below. E-mails sent off-reflector to me
will be tallied but kept private.

THANKS!

WHY I COULDN'T MAKE THE DX CONVENTION (Pick all appropriate numbers in your
response):

1) I made no plans to attend because:

1A I'm frankly tired of conventions.

1B Couldn't allocate the travel/lodging cost.

1C Didn't see anything on the program that would attract me.

1D Technical programs have nothing new of interest.

1E Tours offer nothing new of interest.

1F Didn't know about the convention.

1G Found out about it too late to make plans.

1H Heard it was an "IRCA" convention and I didn't make it because I'm not an
IRCA member.

1J I'm not a member of any DX club and didn't think I could just show up.

1K It's a bad time of year for a convention.

1L I knew about it but didn’t know what was planned for this year.

1M My further thoughts:

2) I was going to be there but:

2A Circumstances caused me to cancel my plans.

2B I forgot about it and didn’t see any reminders.

2C I was told by someone it wouldn’t be worth it.

2D My further thoughts:

THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSES!

2018-09-11 Thread Gary DeBock
Hi Mark,

Thank you for the personal invitation before the convention, and I'm sorry that
I couldn't attend in Phil's place to give the "Frequent Flyer" FSL antenna
demonstration.
For me, it was a case of having gone to Oregon for 9 days in August, the
Cook Islands for 5 days in April and Hawaii for 5 days in December. Sooner or
later you do need to face the reality that travel budgets exist for a reason.

Re: [IRCA] CONVENTION INTENTION

2018-09-11 Thread James Renfrew
I generally do not attend conventions. There are several reasons. My wife
is not interested. I work weekends (I'm a pastor). I have attended a few
over the years, only because they were close by in Rochester and Syracuse
(WTFDA). I helped plan the Rochester convention and held events at my
home. The cost of travel is not an issue.

I am not much interested in station tours, or visits to antenna sites. But
I like workshops and just general talking.

I like mixing with other DXers but the travel piece is probably the most
daunting factor.

[IRCA] CONVENTION INTENTION

2018-09-11 Thread Mark Durenberger
This is an unofficial request for planning information, generated as a result
of the 2018 DX Convention in St. Charles MO.

If you couldn't make St. Charles, your response to the following queries will
help future planning, so please respond; either via this reflector, or
privately to me if you wish.

But DO reply! A poor response to this inquiry will be a signal in itself, so
please take 24 seconds to answer this. All you have to do is return this
e-mail, listing the relevant numbers below. E-mails sent off-reflector to me
will be tallied but kept private.

THANKS!

Mark Durenberger

[IRCA] CONVENTION REGISTRATION

2018-08-14 Thread Mark Durenberger
Hello folks and folkettes:

The IRCA Convention schedule is looking good!

If you're attending, you can help tie a loose knot.

While registration is free for IRCA members it would be very helpful for Ken
if you could let him know directly if you're planning on attending.

Won't you kindly send him a note, so he can add your name to the
"body-count" for the events? Use this:

  2018 Convention

The 2018 IRCA convention will be held at the Best Western Plus Charles
Inn in St Charles MO on September 7 and 8 2018. The hotel is located at
1425 S Fifth Street in St Charles, NW of I-70 exit 229B, or the first
exit west of the Missouri River, eight miles west of the Lambert St
Louis International Airport. The room rate is $104.99 a night for either
a standard king or two queens. The phone number to call the hotel
directly to make reservations for that weekend is (636) 946-6936 or
toll-free at 1-888-274-0988. When calling to make the reservation, you
must mention the code IRCA to get the rate. There is a block of 30 rooms
reserved at that rate for each night for your choice of a single or
double bed, your choice. Reservations must be made by August 7 2018. One
note, if all the rooms for this block sell out, then the meeting room at
the hotel will be complementary. Registration for IRCA members is $0;
registration for non-members is $25 per person with free breakfast.
There will be a tentative radio tour of KCLC FM 89.1 at Lindenwood
College in St Charles as well as another possible radio tour and a
possible tentative radio tower visit. The annual Banquet is out of
pocket and at Culpepper's, just down the street from the hotel at 3010 W
Clay St, St Charles MO  63301 (burgers, catfish, broccoli Alfredo pasta,
chicken strips, etc – https://www.culpeppers.com/Home). Your host for
the convention is Ken Hawkins. You can either email him at
stlouisherd...@gmail.com or you can call him on this cell phone at
(636) 577-4295. Registration and auction items can be sent to 4034 San
Fernando Ln, St Charles MO  63304-2829.
Make your plans and reservations now for the 2018 IRCA convention as
this will probably be one of the best! All DXers are welcome!

Tentative schedule soon.

[IRCA] Convention etc

2015-08-09 Thread Mike Sanburn
Now is a good time for anyone considering a bid to host the 2016 IRCA
Convention to start getting details together. October deadline comes fast. It
will be our clubs 52nd anniversary!

Also, although not affiliated with IRCA, the ARRL Southwest Division Convention
will be happening at The Torrance South Bay Marriott this September 11-13.
Details and registration info are available at www.hamconinc.org Perhaps if
there are some BCB DXers in attendance we can share a table at the Saturday
banquet!? You don't have to be a licensed ham to attend (but it doesn't hurt).
Host hotel is not far from KNX transmitter site at Columbia Park.

Hi Mike:

As much as I would love to be there, previous commitments prevent me from
attending.

Sorry.

Oh, and maybe I should consider a challenge of attempting a TP DX session at
Columbia Park in the morning, especially near the southwest corner?  Or am I
the only one who would dare attempt it?  (Maybe a FSL might help, instead of my
SAT.)
I've been planning for about a month or two now to go by there and test
selectivity on some portable radios I have, but so far haven't been able to.
This past 2nd Sunday I didn't get enough sleep the night before and was busy
all day (I would have been available before 10am), and I was wanting to go to
the RDMAs tomorrow (hadn't bought tickets yet cause I wasn't going to know
until tomorrow noon or later if I'd be able to go; would have stopped by
Columbia Park earlier in the day on the way) but there's no tickets available
unless I want to be scalped.

Speaking of selectivity, I've noticed something on IBOC stations on radios with
relatively wide selectivity.  I'm wanting to do more experiments to confirm,
but on some of my non-DSP radios, I hear the analog splatter pretty far beyond
where I hear the IBOC hiss on strong stations.  Hmm

I'm not sure yet, I might like to go though as long as it isn't too expensive.
:)  Depending on what's going on, I may consider coming up just for one day,
idk yet if I want to spend $ on a motel, and if I do it'd be offsite so I could
hopefully get it for under $45/night.  Also another possible factor in my
coming, I'd love to meet some DXers who are outside KNX's 0.25mV/m-10% skywave
contour.  I guess it'd be the wrong time of the year to buy a tower site
calendar, but maybe I could see some FSL antennas and hot-rodded ultralights?
:)  Sorry Scott but I don't plan on going to a convention this year that would
benefit from flying there.  (I'm not afraid of planes, just don't want to spend
the $ and I'm already tentatively thinking of going to another trade (piano
technicians guild) convention in Denver in summer but haven't decided yet.)

I'd have to agree that the 50th Anniversary edition of the
convention was definitely one of the best, and John & Nancy did a super
job of putting it together.Perhaps Pat is being a bit modest though,
as I'd have to say that of the conventions I've been to, the 2006

The emails are increasing to a version where they can't be read unless you
click on two things. Frankly, it is a PITA. If this continues and
increases, I'll simply drop out of this email list. The other half dozen or
so I have, email lists do work just as before, and easy to read.

Hopefully at the IRCA Convention there will be a discussion to revert to the
better email list version.

I even have email lists on two of my web sites. Mine does not make the
difficult version and never has...

Yahoo Mail addresses generate the "John Smith via IRCA" and mime-attachment

I've also noticed that using reply, not reply to all, sends an email to the

Mike,

Its the lack of time off from work and the $$ that would keep me from
going. unfortunate, but it's the case when you work with a small staff.

I'll go through the pile of stuff Ive been collecting before the convention
happens and send some to John & Nancy.

[IRCA] CONVENTION UPDATE

2013-07-26 Thread Mark Durenberger
We're less than a week away from the historic joint DX-Club Convention where
we'll welcome you to Minneapolis.

Some last-minute notes:

Eats:
The OPTIONAL Friday lunch ("IEEE Advanced Antennas") is a box lunch (Turkey
or Ham sandwich, cookie and pop). You previously indicated whether you'd be
attending and can pay us the $10 when you register. If you want to attend
this high-level working lunch, please advise NLT Monday.

Friday night we have scheduled a "pizza-fest" and if you can't tolerate the
stuff, you can make separate arrangements before the museum staff goes out
to pick up the food.

The Banquet Saturday night will be an 8 oz. Sirloin with fresh garden salad,
baked potato, green beans, fresh baked bread, chocolate cake, coffee or tea.

Don't forget about our DX-Pedition Thursday evening (details when you
check-in). "Formal" festivities begin Friday morning at 8:30 and conclude
late Sunday morning.

If you're flying, call the hotel upon arrival for the courtesy shuttle:
952-884-8211. Chances are you'll be sharing the shuttle with other DX-ers.

If you're driving, plug: "1201 West 94th Street, Bloomington, MN" into
your GPS. That's I-35 W and 94th Street. We'll appreciate it if you can be
a "car-pool" driver.

Any other questions? Please holler!

Regards,

Mark Durenberger

THANKS and a 'tip of the DX-er Hat' to those of you who have pre-registered
for the joint DX Convention Aug 1-4.

Your friendly nag is back to remind you that if you're planning to attend,
it would help us big-time if you register now. The hotel rooms are filling
fast...and an accurate head-count gives us an opportunity to be responsible
to the hotel for a Banquet head-count.

I wholeheartedly agree, Fred. Still, after 50 years, I would hope that
people would finally let by-gones be by-gones (old cliche, I know) and
co-exist peacefully with members of other clubs.

What would let by-gones heal would be if the people who caused it
apologized. There have been uncomfortable situations where managers did
something to a member that really wasn't fair. For example, I was told to
pay $50 to get my email to access again, even though that email was the same
NOAA WWV Solar Report that has been running here and at others for well over
ten years. And I did NOT cause the problem which had it blocked. There
have been other issues which had a number of people resign and never return.

I will not be going to that convention.

I hope sufficient security will be in place to handle any possible dust-ups
between club members with long memories.  I'd hate to hear that an NRC member
wrapped his walker around an IRCAer, or that an NRCer was the recipient of a
cane-bonking from someone in IRCA.  Probably a good idea to bring along a few

Subject: CONVENTION AGENDA

The program agenda for the combined 2013 DX Convention is taking shape.
This year’s event is called “Learning and Sharing 2013” and we have a lot of
both for you. Folks from the National Radio Club, the IRCA and the
Minnesota DX Club will keep your attention through the three days of the
get-together.

Here’s a partial list of topics:

“Interference workshop” (DX-ing in noisy environments, how to enlist the
help of the power company for electrical noise; how to quiet down smaller
antennas).

We’ll hear about Nick’s “DXFISHBARREL” and share a session on using the
Grey-Line. There’ll be updates on what’s going on these days from Long-Wave
to 10 gigahertz.

Sessions on Ultralights and SDRs.

Antenna design sessions will include short verticals for MW, antenna
advancements by Kaz; the quest for the ‘perfect’ loop antenna, and the
latest on the FSL antenna.

Thursday night we’re trying to put together a DX-Pedition with a Beverage
antenna on an abandoned railroad bed. We also hope to set up an antenna at
the hotel for your use in capturing signals in the Minneapolis area.

As a bonus, we’ve added a Friday lunch to the schedule, featuring a
fascinating presentation by the IEEE on state-of-the-art antenna
advancements.
Friday night at the Museum we’ll enjoy a Pizza-Fest, “Show-and-Tell” from
members and we’ll block out time for separate club business meetings,
followed by discussions of general interest. (Among topics will be “the
aging of the clubs,” how to attract new members, what services club members
would like.)

The world-famous auction will also be held at the Museum Friday night, and
this year we anticipate some very nice radio gear going on the block.

Saturday evening’s banquet will feature Dean Sorenson, long-time radio
broadcaster and a DX Audio Service member who’ll share a fascinating look at
what it’s like to build and manage radio stations. The banquet will be
followed by the DX Quiz

The agenda continues under construction and may include Sunday-morning
sessions. If you haven’t registered, please get it done now because the
hotel is filling up. Registration information is found at
http://www.nrcdxas.org/

Mark Durenberger

cane-bonking from someone in IRCA. Probably a good idea to bring along a few
of the great-grandkids to step in the middle and keep the peace if things start
to get ugly.

Of course, you'd have to explain to them what "radio" is.

Marc, you shook up some old memories. My first convention was the NRC
gathering in Kittaning PA in 1951 (I was 17). In 1953 I was in Wheeling

many of the great names of the 40s-50s at these conventions. Been to a
number of conventions, get-to-gethers in the 60s & 70s and they all were
fun. Great pix Bob, many thanks...

Re: [IRCA] IRCA convention photos

2011-06-25 Thread Patrick Martin
Barry,

I have a friend that is 58 and he has not listened to MW (AM) for
decades. He listens to the radio rarely and when he does, it is FM. He
cannot understand my interest in AM. He does not know about HD AM
(IBOC), never heard of it, until I mentioned it. What amazes me about
AM, is there are still so many new stations always coming on the air.
Why? If no one is listening. Then we see lists of stations that are
silent and many never return. I know 4 kids that go to our church, 2
boys that are about to turn 16, their sister who is 17, and their friend
who just turned 18. I have talked to them about radio. They give me
blank stares. Radio? That is what our grandparents listen to. In their
comment. By the way, their grandparents are younger than I am! I know
their grandmother who is 53 and she listens to FM once in a while! I
have an idea that when our generation is gone, AM will be gone for the
most part. Oh there might be some 50KW clears running around, but most
everyone under 30 has an Ipod, etc. They could care less about radio. TV
they know, but it is HD this and HD that. I see Netflix (movie rentals)
is moving to more streaming video, so within a few years, renting that
blockbuster hit will be history on a disc too. Records made way for CDs
an they are also on their way out. Everything is on hard drives. Is
radio any different. Even QSLs are on their way out. I never thought I
would see that day on if you could get a QSL, most are e mails these
days. Stations don't even have letterhead. Next year I will be at the
dials for 50 years. I started in Seward AK at 13 in 1962. Boy has things
changed.

2011-06-08 Thread Mike Sanburn

Sure hope that you can make it!! Even if you're just there for the Saturday
only, you'll still be able to go on the tower tour, attend the IRCA business
meeting, enjoy the banquet at Golden Corral, and participate in the auction.
Good luck and 73--Mike

Registrations and $30 fee should be sent and made payable to Mike Sanburn p.o.

groundwork for this convention including station tours et al and it promises to
be productive weekend. Official announcement will appear in an upcoming DX

[IRCA] 2011 IRCA Convention

2010-11-25 Thread Mike Sanburn

Greetings! Some more initial information on the IRCA Convention commencing on
June 23rd. The local convention and tourism bureau has a fantastic website
containing links to EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know about Colorado Springs!
The site is at www.visitcos.com A real easy one to remember but you may wish
to write it down anyhow. According to the site, it's 35 degrees right now in
town but the wx will be very comfortable by late June. Everybody is invited to
what should be a fine event. More info will be forthcoming. Have a really
terrific Thanksgiving, and darn good DX. 73 Mike Sanburn KG6LJU

June?

The last weekend of June is always the Amateur Radio Field Day.

Not to mention many schools have graduation then.

Thanks to everyone that came making the convention a very good one.
Everything worked out nicely, including the station tours, the trip up
to the Astoria Column, and today a trip to Tillamook to the Tillamook
Cheese Factory, the Air Museum, and a run by KTIL-1590. A special thank
you goes to Phil for once again doing the IRCA auction.
A write up will follow in the next few weeks in the bulletin. I am tried
out a bit, but it sure was a lot of fun. Seeing everyone once again was
sure great.

The convention will start tomorrow (Friday) with a tour of KSWB at 9 AM...

The meeting room will open after the tour, about 10 AM.
The second tour will be at 1:30 PM (I believe) up north in Warrenton.
