[IRCA] DX Tests

2014-07-17 Thread Phil Bytheway via IRCA

DX TESTS
Brandon Jordan – PO Box 338 – Rossville TN  38066
E-mail: bdjo...@gmail.com

Brandon Jordan is our new DX Tests co-ordinator, working for both IRCA and NRC.
He has established the above PO Box/email for correspondence. He is also
available at 901-592-9847 or FAX: 866-240-4221.

Brandon has registered dxtests.net url and will be working on getting a
Wordpress blog set up there in preparation for the upcoming season. He is also
anticipating former DX Test workers to be assisting him in his efforts. In
addition, he is also considering arranging DX tests on SW stations.

DX Tests are “arranged” with various AM stations across the US and Canada. A DX
Test broadcast would most likely be conducted sometime in the overnight hours,
between midnight and 6:00 am typically just after midnight, or just prior to 6
am. These are the best hours for an AM station to skip to distant locations.

DX Test broadcasts used to be popular during the early days of AM radio, and
they continue to this day. When done overnight, they’re perfectly within FCC
regulations, as is broadcasting with full authorized power under the
Experimental Hours rules of 47CFR73.72. In fact, stations have often combined
DX Tests with needed maintenance work or proof-of-performance testing, and
engineers have often told us that the reception reports they received indicated
the quality and strength of their signal, and gave them an opportunity to see
how far it travels under varying conditions.

Tests typically consist of tones and easily identifiable music such as marches,
polkas or anything else you might classify as eclectic. This kind of material
really cuts through the interference and makes a station easily recognizable.
Morse code identifications using a 1000 Hz modulated tone are also widely used.
Recordings for broadcast during a DX Test can be provided by our committee.

Please join us in welcoming Brandon on-board for the next DX season. We
anticipate hearing from him often.

[IRCA] DX Tests what was audible otherwise

2012-03-10 Thread Allen Willie

Hello To All,

Only signals heard were actually before the KBOI test and nothing after , on
670 only weakly heard Spanish , Rebelde presumed. 780 also Spanish , presumed
R. Coro in Venezuela weak. Nothing at all on 720.

Checked off and on during the entire tests times using ultralights and larger
rig. Nothing heard, had to settle for online feeds of the tests.

Not much wonder with K Index at 68 and A index at 5

Thanks to those who arranged the tests

Good DX To All

Re: [IRCA] DX Tests?

2012-03-09 Thread Paul Swearingen
Here ya go. CST for the KOTZ-720 test is from 3:30-4:00 am -Paul Swearingen,
Topeka

PLEASE CORRECT ANY ERRORS ... AND CONSIDER THIS THE ***ALMOST FINAL WORD*** ON
TONIGHT’S SCHEDULED BIG CHICAGO OFF-AIR EVENT

670 WSCR, 720 WGN and 780 WBBM, all in Chicago, are scheduled to go off-air
this coming Saturday morning (late tonight), from 2-4 am CST. (corrected time
-pls.)

A few additional DX opportunities have been scheduled or will be otherwise
available in light of this:

Scott Fybush reports he has confirmed with 670 KBOI in Boise ID that it will do
some limited testing during the Chicago silent period. KBOI will maintain
regular programming but will drop in Morse code IDs at about 1:08 MST (3:08
EST) and 1:38 MST (3:38 EST), using 50 kW ND ***ONLY*** during the code IDs. I
strongly recommend monitoring 670 a few minutes before and after each of these
times. No QSL info as of yet.

Paul Walker reports KOTZ 720 Kotzebue Alaska will test for 30 minutes during
the off-air period. The test will consist of sweep tones, Morse code, sound
effects and other announcements and is scheduled for -0030 LOCAL TIME.
Kotzebue is rather close to Russia. I have not yet determined its time zone.
Alaska has several, I believe.

QSL info for KOTZ: Please include location, receiver, antennae as well as a log
of what you heard and when, and comments on signal quality. Chief Engineer
Pierre Lonewolf is particularly interested in the results from this skywave
skip as KOTZ is evaluating its signal, and a favor deserves a favour in return.

  Hello To All,

Heard the KRPI Test this morning with two different morse code segments
later on in the test. There was a slight hint of music peaking a bit at
times as well parallel to what was on their web feed.

At the time another Spanish speaking station with light music was also
  weakly heard on the frequency.

Two ultralights were used, first the SRF-M37W with no success, then the
SRF-39FP which did manage to capture the code and music very weakly coming
  through.

  Receiver : SRF-39FP barefoot

[IRCA] DX Tests update - PLEASE GIVE WIDEST POSSIBLE DISSEMINATION

2012-02-23 Thread James Pogue
I double-checked today to make sure we were on track all looks good for both
tests. Here is an edited version of what I got back from Dave Harris (I
don't want to give away too much as we want to ensure everyone stays
honest):

Yes Jim, we are on track. The test will begin at 1:00 AM Pacific time on
Sunday Morning and last for half an hour. There will be a full minute of
Morse Code at the top of each five minute segment. The Morse Code text will
be //deleted// at 1000 Hz followed by the same sequence at 1500 Hz. The
speed is about 12 WPM. There will be an occasional announcement indicating
that the station is engaged in a test, and there will be a mix of //unique
music// and //more unique music//.

We will be running day power (50kW) and day pattern during the test. I am
really looking forward to this event and hope it proves successful.

73, David

I also checked with RJ Harris at WTKT and WHP and he said everything is set
to go for his tests too.

Good luck everyone - I'm hoping many of us will log some new ones this
weekend.

73, Jim Pogue

the signal is buried in the mud and can't tell if the music is form WYTH or
someone else.
MO Earl Higgins - Occasional weak tones around 1:03 and 1:09 ELT, not really
enough to put into the log books, so for now this will have to be the one that
got away
NE Rick Dau - Might have heard something that sounded like a code ID at 0113
ELT, but KYYS in Kansas City just too strong
OR Pat Martin - Getting tones and sounded like weak morse code a couple of

Wow, what a thoroughly impressive list. Thanks to all who were involved
setting these up. I would really hope that these stations (especially WKVQ)
will be willing to do this again, perhaps when next season rolls around.

[IRCA] DX TESTS CANCELLED

2011-02-10 Thread Chernos Saul

Bad news. I just heard from the engineer who was planning to run tests at KHMO,
WLIQ, and WLRB this weekend and next. He has had tio cancel them for now, with
a view to ***maybe*** running them later this season. I won't get into details
at this time, but rest assured the reasons are completely understandable and
have nothing to do wuith the tests themselves.

The engineer sends his apologies for the short notice, as do I..

I would really appreciate this notice being circulated as far and wide as
possible. I am at Burnt River and borrowing e-mail access because my computer
is in the shop for a fix and tune up. I have no contact lists with me. There
are people who find out about these tests via paper bulletins and DXAS, etc...
so if you know someone in such a situation, who does not have e-mail access but
is likely to be anticipating the tests, please let them know, if at all
possible.

[IRCA] DX tests question

2010-12-26 Thread Saul Chernos
Wishing you all a happy new year, with lots of DX.

And a couple things:

If any of you have initiated conversations with engineers or other station
reps, and nothing has yet been settled or come to pass, would you please
consider recomnecting and seeing if you can firm up a test in 2011?

And your opinions, please on an idea - would it make sense, when writing or
e-mailing for QSLs, to include a separate letter, or a phrase in the QSL
request, explaining that one thing AM DXers like...yadda yadda, is DX tests...?
The request would of course be more refined than that. It could be as simple as
a sentence. Or would it somehow be counter-productive to the request for a QSL?

Your good wisdom and guidance, please...

Re: [IRCA] DX tests question

2010-12-26 Thread George Sherman
Isn't one of the problems in getting stations to test is that most are 24
hours, and they have commitments to run ads DX test programming might drive
away listeners?

I wonder if these objections could be avoided by DX tests of 1 minute or less?
KJNP-1170 North Pole, AK used to give calls once on top of hour in morse code,
as requested by DXers. Very short DX tests, but semi-permanent!

Some stations may be confused about FCC rules. Is there really anything that
says they can't ID on top of hour in code, as long as they also give voice ID?

[IRCA] DX Tests 2001-11

2010-08-01 Thread Chernos Saul

I'm getting in gear for the 2010-11 AM DX Season - I'm an avid FM-TV DXer and
am not crazy about listening to lightning crackles, so I pretty well shut down
the AM rigs from May-August.

After cracking an imaginary bottle of champagne on the AM radios, including my
new Tecsun handheld with a loopstick mod, I sent out e-mails to a few people I
am hoping will be able to source us some DX tests this coming season. And I've
had a few replies - details TBA shortly.

So it's time, fellow DXers, for each of you - and I am asking each and every
one of you to pause for a moment and at least this some thought - to ask at
least one or two stations to run a DX test for the clubs. Have you ever heard
from and benefited from a test? If so, here's your chance to 'give back. If
you haven't, here's an opportunity to log something new; perhaps a target
you've been after for a long time.

Call an engineer, PD or owner you know. If you have received an overly friendly
response to a QSL request, or even your home-town local, put a call in, or send
an e-mail. (I find that an e-mail, followed if need be by a phone call, works
best). Put a bug in their ear. Let them know what DX tests are all about. How
easy they are to run, given that we'll supply any content they need, including
morse code and sweep tones and such. If they can turn on the daytime stick,
that's really helpful, and a great chance for them to run their own tests on
it. During the -0600 (local) legal test hours, that is. Two variations of
tests I am looking at thus far - a chunk of time running anywhere from a few
minutes to a few hours. Or a minute or two at the top of each hour (works well
with stations whose day and night patterns and power are the same). Feel free
to get craetive with this ... could automate TOH 'test minutes' at, say, 0200,
every morning for a week, or every Sunday or Monda!
y morning...whatever works for the test operator and station.

Feel free to point them my way if they have any questions.

And thank them for considering your request. Just like I'm thanking each and
every one of you for taking a moment to consider this request to you. Ok, maybe
don't lean on 'em so heavily - no guilt trips. Remember, they are doing you a
favour even getting back to you. So be nice to them throught. Make it a
positive experience for them. If not now, maybe down the road, etc...

Anyhow, I encourage you to do what you can. The more lead time, the better,
so's we can print alert details in club bulletins, and also best to run tests
from Sept-April.

Thank you for considering...and where possible acting on this request.

73,

Saul

[IRCA] DX Tests Committee – Inaugural 2010 Rep ort

2010-01-12 Thread Chernos Saul

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO FORWARD TO APPROPRIATE PLACES...

DX Tests Committee – Inaugural 2010 Report

Welcome to what we hope will be a semi-regular feature.

We have undertaken to revive the DX tests Committee, a joint venture of IRCA
and NRC, with a view to encouraging stations to run special tests or to let us
know in advance when they will be working on their facilities.

It seems, lately, that DX tests have gone the way of the QSL. Tests used to be
a relatively common, yet fewer and fewer stations are participating. We used to
enjoy several one or two tests a month, at their peak. Now we’re lucky to get
one or two a year.

We’d like to see more activity. Tests are an opportunity to log new stations –
daytimers running at night, or a 24-hour station running daytime power and
pattern during the witching hour.

More tests will also complement other efforts to revive and maintain interest
in DX at a time when conventional radio’s days seem numbered. Witness all the
effort to promote ultralight radios, $50 marvels that, even without
modifications, have tremendous nulling capabilities and can pick up stations
thousands of miles away.

Tests generally run between and 0600 local time, when broadcast regulators
allow testing and other related activity to take place. We don’t recommend
abusing this privilege – for example, running on day power and pattern on
multiple, consecutive nights. Once a year, or whenever a station needs to tweak
its technical facilities, is more than sufficient.

Content can vary, but tests intended for DX reception generally include morse
code IDs, sound effects such as sweep tones, and an eclectic mix of music – say
high-school marching bands or the wild sounds of the klezmer. In other words,
material that helps the station stand out from others on the same frequency.
Morse code and sweep tones are particularly effective at cutting through a
crowded channel. Even graveyarders – local stations on frequencies such as 1230
and 1400 – have been heard at great distances.

Stations should run DX tests using their daytime transmitter pattern and power.
Otherwise, they’re really doing nothing much out of the ordinary.

DX tests don’t magically appear. They happen through the concerted effort of
volunteers like you who contact the stations and ask. If you know an engineer,
program director or owner at a particular station, why not ask! Perhaps you are
the engineer, PD or owner. If you receive a particularly friendly QSL, send a
thank-you and a friendly, polite pitch for a test.

The worst that can happen is you’ll be turned down. Really, that’s no big deal
– just move on and ask another station. Somebody, somewhere will eventually say
Yes! if you persist in your efforts and make a conscious effort to be friendly
and approachable.

When a station agrees to test, let us know so we can notify DXers around the
world. Contact us at the address above. If you’re not sure how to make your
query, or if your station contact isn’t familiar with running a DX test, we’re
here to help. We can provide you with a generic sample letter, which you can
adapt to suit your target station. We can even provide sound effects and
‘weird’ music.

We might add that if you hear in advance of a station planning to go off the
air to do transmitter work, please let us know immediately. A station briefly
vacating a channel also represents an opportunity to hear stations that would
normally be obscured. Furthermore, consider asking the station to run some
morse code, sweep tones, or other DX test material for a few minutes when
they’re doing their work or returning to the air.

Please keep in mind that the more advance notice you can provide, the better
able we are to pass the word along through DX club paper bulletins and over the
DX Audio Service. Unfortunately, not every DXer has internet access (those of
you who do not have computers might consider setting up a Hotmail or Yahoo
account and using a computer at your local library – you’ll get lots of good DX
tips by subscribing to the many alert and discussion lists out there).

Here’s a New Year’s challenge: If each of you reading this contacts one station
– well, can you imagine? That would be a season to remember!

To help, this column will appear periodically in the paper bulletins of both
clubs, and also online where appropriate (feel free to circulate).

You are welcome to e-mail any feedback and suggestions to the committee at
dxte...@bell.net or to log onto dxtests.i...@gmail.com to see what tests have
been scheduled.

73s,

Saul Chernos

[IRCA] DX Tests?

2009-02-19 Thread Les Rayburn
Yesterday brought temps in the mid 70's, and a huge round of Spring type severe
weather. Well into the evening, static crashes made DXing difficult here. In
general, nighttime static levels are already starting to rise, which usually
means the end of the Winter DX Season is coming soon.

While some amazing propagation has been seen nationwide this year, it's been
one of the worse seasons for DX Tests that I can recall during my short DXing
career. I'm sure that the economic crisis has played into this

Hopefully both the economy and DXing will begin to recover by next season.

Re: [IRCA] DX Tests . Info

2009-01-31 Thread Brandon Jordan
Hi Bill. Thank you for the heads up. I am the admin of that site and
wasn't aware it was down. It is back now, but unfortunately no current
DX Tests are scheduled that I am aware of.

I have accessed this page within the last 2-3 weeks right before the WOON DX
test. Has anybody else tried to get onto it lately? Does anybody know if it
still exists?

Re: [IRCA] DX Tests

2007-08-16 Thread J.D. Stephens
Paul, your efforts on the DX tests are most
appreciated.

One small thing, though; I suspect that Jim, as our
Broadcast Test Coordinator (BTC), has a certain
methodology worked out for getting the word spread on
upcoming tests, which he'd be pleased as punch for us
all to follow so as to make his job easier.

Jim, feel free to chime in here if I've got the
workflow details mixed up, but I thought the more
helpful think for you was for us to funnel any test
details to you so that, when they're finalized and
ready to publicize you can do so, so that there's one
central source of information.

I really think that's the way to go on this, but again
Jim, feel free to correct this if needed.

Well, I've already heard from some of the Chief
 Engineers/Station's I've
contacted concerning the fact I wanted them to do DX
 tests.

4seperate stations have agreed to do DX Tests, but
 we have not scheduled
 anything.

 2 stations are 50,000 Watt Day facilities(with
 reduced night power) in New
England and 1 station is a 50,000 Watt Daytimer in
 the Southeastern United
States. The 4th station is a 1KW Daytimer operating
 on a 250 Watt STA.

The 2 stations in New England will most likely only
 run an inventory insert
once or twice an hour, as they can't break
 programming. The 50KW 1KW(250W
STA) Daytimer in the Southeastern US will most
likely run at least an hour
 of tones/code/music.

All stations have agreed to test at their Full
 Power/Daytime Pattern.

As soon as we nail some stuff down and I've arranged
 things with
 Jim-J.D.-Joe-Les-Me... we'll let you know ;)

Powell,

Not sure if January 10th qualifies as mid-Winter, but it's getting close. :)
It's been so
warm down here, it's hard to tell.

Any chance I can twist your arm for a test from WKDK?

 Les,

IF I get to get moved back to Newberry and do stuff
for WKDK, I'l set up a DX test on the new BE
transmitter. I still have my MD of WKDK CW, I think.

It will be mid winter before we can do anything.

Re: [IRCA] DX tests

2006-12-12 Thread Les Rayburn
Powell,

Just checking in to see if work has slowed down enough to allow you to
consider setting up a date/time for a WKDK test. South Carolina remains
near the top of many DX'ers wish list especially on the West Coast, so
I know this will be a popular test.

I can provide new Morse Code material, sweep tones, etc...and we'll be
happy to handle the QSL chores. Just let me know how things are going,
and when we can set one up.

Thanks again,
