2013-03-06 Thread Patrick Martin
Kaz,

For some reason, KHQN was not in my logbook. It seems I have never
logged them, or at least I have no record of it. That is strange, as the
station goes back to at least the 60s or 70s when the dial was more open
and they were a 1 KW daytimer. Strange I did not have them. The same was
true about WGY. I had no record of ever logging them in AK or OR until
the 90s, when I nabbed them. WGY is heard on occasion u/KGO off the
Eastern Beverage, even today.

[IRCA] DX Tip for WDXR

Re: [IRCA] DX Tip for WDXR (KBRV-800)

2012-04-26 Thread Patrick Martin
KBRV 790 was a toughie to log some years back with Boise & Billings on
there, but I finally caught them. Then they were a toughie to QSL. KBRV
800 has not been easy for me either with CKOR blasting in, but with the
A&K elevated, there was no sign of CKOR that is normally S9+20-30 DB.
I'll keep my fingers crossed (and toes too.hi) on trying to QSL their
new freq.

Hence the DX test: what WGBW's owner Mark Heller was doing was testing
out a brand-new AM directional array. His old one-tower site was just
north of Two Rivers, within spitting distance of the Lake Michigan
shoreline. The new four-tower, 10 kW site is just off I-43 near
Cooperstown, a few miles southeast of Denmark, and it's designed to
blast into Green Bay, a few miles to the northwest.

Mark just bought a second station in the area, WMBE 1530 New Holstein
(ex-Chilton, but with no change in facilities)...maybe we can get him to
test that one soon, too, though it will get clobbered at night by WCKY.

[IRCA] DX Tip for WDXR

2011-03-26 Thread Patrick Martin
1230 KRYN OR, Gresham, phased out KKEE's open carrier to get a good
signal on KRYN running SS and a mix of Mexican pop and Romantica ID at
1455 EDT 3/26 "KRYN Gresham-Portand", followed by some slogan I could
not catch. They are no longer // with KGDD 1520 "La Gran D", it seems. I
generally only hear them at night here as KKEE kind blocks the channel 7
miles away, that is unless I phase them, but it is easier when KKEE has
a open carrier. I had not caught 1230 Gresham under this call before
either. Station has been around since the 50s. I think they were KGRO
with 100w in the beginning. By the 60s changed to KRDR and rock and
later switched to C&W and they were that format until the 80s. After
that it has been one call and format change after another. Busto Media
bought them some years ago and they switched to Spanish. (PM-OR)

Mike,

Considering the distance, So Cal is generally not all that good here
except for the powerhouses like KFI or KNX and even those are 1/4 the
signal stations like KNBR or KGO. Anytime I get a new regional it is
very exciting. A GYer is even more rare. LA/ San Diego is close to
1,000 miles from here.
Now to try and get a QSL.

2010-02-08 Thread Russ Edmunds
To me, the problem is less one of ELT vs PLT than it is a different LT for each
column or worse yet for each reporter. As long as all of the domestic DX
columns march to the same drum it doesn't matter which drum it is.

Walt,

The tip also goes to Nancy (WDXR) and the IRCA has always used Eastern
Time for domestic tips. We have discussed that many times within the
club as some of us, myself included would like to move everything to
UTC. But the domestic DXers are for leaving things as they are. So for
DXWW-West and DXWW-East we use UTC, for Domestic DX it is the Eastern.

Just a general question, fellas, about nomenclature. Is using EST the
accepted time to use? Personally, I find this confusing, and prefer to use
UTC so that everyone knows the time at their own location (my DX shack has
both a local PT clock and a UTC clock). I'm just curious why Patrick would
choose to use EST when he's in the PST zone, and Manitoba is in the central
time zone. Thanks! .Walt

[IRCA] DX Tip for WDXR

2010-01-30 Thread Patrick Martin
1220 WP?? UNID station here with ID at 0059.55 EST 1/31. After
another Unid station said "We're Number One!", a weak signal with a
woman announcer said "WP??News. and ???" Then lost in the
jumble. I listened back to the cassette with EQ and 4 different sets of
headphones. Whatever it was, it was a goodie! But knowing the beverage
and the way signals pop in and out, it is doubtfull I will hear it
again. Often, I hear these flea power distant stations once and on
occasion one will pop in strong enough at TOH ID to catch it. 1220 is a
jumble of a dozen or more of signals most nights. (PM-OR)

Thanks Paul,

The KDAK could have sounded like an KDHH or ?. I thought maybe a new
addition to the group, a FM. I am quite pleased with the log though.
Been after KDDR for sometime.

KQDJ is on 101.1 licensed to Valley City and KQDJ 1400 is licensed to
Jamestown.

You could've heard "KOVC", or "KDAK" as I know KOVC, KDAK and KDDR do
sometimes simulcast on all 3 signals.
