[IRCA] Don Kaskey - SK

2013-02-19 Thread kevin redding
It is with great regret and sadness that I got a phone call from Don Kaskey's
wife telling me he has passed away recently on his birthday due to a heart
attack.

I know many of us loved Don as a brother in our hobby and that he was a very
good man and great friend to me. I will miss him terribly.

Don will be having a memorial service at Broadmoor Presbyterian Church in Daly
City, California March 2nd at 4 PM.

73 Don, you were one of the fathers of the DX hobby. We will all miss you.

[IRCA] Don Kaskey - SK

2013-02-19 Thread Rick Dau

I'm absolutely stunned by this.  He was a fellow Iowan, and I always enjoyed
e-mailing him about the common DXploits that he and I shared from our years in
the Hawkeye State.  I think he logged close to 4000 AM stations over the years,
and that feat certainly puts him up there among the greats in the hobby.  He
will be sorely missed.  :(

2013-02-19 Thread John Callarman

This is the saddest news I've heard in a long, long time. Don Kaskey was one
of the few survivors among the DX'ers who were members of the National Radio
Club when I joined in 1956. His love of the hobby and the friendships he
established during the subsequent 57 years were part of the foundation our
hobby is built upon. I met Don at NRC's Eugene, Oregon Convention in 1967. I
admired his sense of humor and his patience with most of us.

2013-02-19 Thread Mike Hawkins
This hurts!

Since I was local to Don, I called him quite a few times and was a guest at
his house once. He and his wife were both very nice people and very
gracious. I really enjoyed talking with Don and I'm feeling a big
emptiness right now with this news. Likely nothing compared to the sadness
that his family feels. Listening to him and his stories, he had a good
life. He can be grateful for that, and we can be grateful for our memory
of him.

Walt,

It has been 3 years since John's passing? Where does the time go? We
have lost so many. As a good friend, Alan Roycroft, CE at many Hawaiian
stations for years used to say. "Before long we will be all history."
Alan passed away in about 2002.

73,

Patrick

2013-02-19 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Don was also a great supporter of the club in his day as well, I
know he was involved in the production of DX Monitor (editor?) , and
hosted the 1976 IRCA convention in San Francisco in the hotel that he
managed at the time, if my memory banks are firing on all
cylinders. There was something about an ERBA loop in bygone days
as well, which pretty much guaranteed that your memory banks would
fire at random if the stories I heard were true.

One of the great things about this hobby has been meeting people like Don.

best wishes,

Nick

I am so sorry to hear this news. I have great memories of our email
exchanges. I used to live in San Francisco, and Don in Iowa. When we
ran into each other via the club, he lived in San Francisco and I had
moved to Iowa.

I had been within a 100 feet of him in San Francisco and never new it
until after I had moved to Iowa.

2013-02-20 Thread Dennis Vroom

Sad to read the news of Don Kaskey's death. I never met Don, but enjoyed his
postings on the IRCA reflector. Don sent me a log of some of his DX receptions
from the hotel he managed in Union Square, San Francisco during the 1970's.
Many TP receptions along with domestics catches. Enjoyed reading about the
stations Don heard during his long MW DXing career. Condolences to his family
and friends.  Rest in Peace Don.

Best regards,

Thank you for forwarding this Kevin.

I didn't know Don personally but his name is familiar from postings and
a couple of emails about antennas. A great loss for the hobby and to
many personally.

My condolences to his family.

I met Don twice: (1) NRC Wheeling convention (1953 I think) and (2) at a
Sacramento area IRCA convention (1971?). After I moved to Tacoma from SF in
1996, we communicated from time to time on the ever-changing SF radio scene. He
was a solid DXer and a fine person and will be missed.

2013-02-22 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Having been away on holiday, I've only just learned of Don's
passing. As others have said, a real shock, and a loss to the
hobby. I never had the privelege of meeting Don in person, and my
direct contact with him was limited to a number of e-mails, but I always
appreciated his friendliness, and his positive attitude no matter the
circumstances. He'll certainly be missed, both on this list, and in
the hobby more generally.
