[IRCA] Don Kaskey - SK
It is with great regret and sadness that I got a phone call from Don Kaskey's wife telling me he has passed away recently on his birthday due to a heart attack. I know many of us loved Don as a brother in our hobby and that he was a very good man and great friend to me. I will miss him terribly. Don will be having a memorial service at Broadmoor Presbyterian Church in Daly City, California March 2nd at 4 PM. 73 Don, you were one of the fathers of the DX hobby. We will all miss you. [IRCA] Don Kaskey - SK
I'm absolutely stunned by this. He was a fellow Iowan, and I always enjoyed e-mailing him about the common DXploits that he and I shared from our years in the Hawkeye State. I think he logged close to 4000 AM stations over the years, and that feat certainly puts him up there among the greats in the hobby. He will be sorely missed. :( 73, Rick Dau South Omaha, Nebraska - Forwarded Message - From: kevin redding To: "a...@yahoogroups.com" Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2013 2:15 PM Subject: [ABDX] Don Kaskey - SK It is with great regret and sadness that I got a phone call from Don Kaskey's wife telling me he has passed away recently on his birthday due to a heart attack. I first met Don when he hosted the West Sacramento NRC convention at the El Rancho. I'm not at home so I can't look it up but that would have probably been 1971. Re: [IRCA] Don Kaskey - SK
This is the saddest news I've heard in a long, long time. Don Kaskey was one of the few survivors among the DX'ers who were members of the National Radio Club when I joined in 1956. His love of the hobby and the friendships he established during the subsequent 57 years were part of the foundation our hobby is built upon. I met Don at NRC's Eugene, Oregon Convention in 1967. I admired his sense of humor and his patience with most of us. John Callarman, KA9SPA, Family Genealogist, Retired Newspaper Editor, DX-oyente, Krum TX (AKA Qal R. This hurts! Since I was local to Don, I called him quite a few times and was a guest at his house once. He and his wife were both very nice people and very gracious. I really enjoyed talking with Don and I'm feeling a big emptiness right now with this news. Likely nothing compared to the sadness that his family feels. Listening to him and his stories, he had a good life. He can be grateful for that, and we can be grateful for our memory of him. Don was also a great supporter of the club in his day as well, I know he was involved in the production of DX Monitor (editor?) , and hosted the 1976 IRCA convention in San Francisco in the hotel that he managed at the time, if my memory banks are firing on all cylinders. There was something about an ERBA loop in bygone days as well, which pretty much guaranteed that your memory banks would fire at random if the stories I heard were true. Sad to read the news of Don Kaskey's death. I never met Don, but enjoyed his postings on the IRCA reflector. I met Don twice: (1) NRC Wheeling convention (1953 I think) and (2) at a Sacramento area IRCA convention (1971?). After I moved to Tacoma from SF in 1996, we communicated from time to time on the ever-changing SF radio scene. He was a solid DXer and a fine person and will be missed. Re: [IRCA] Don Kaskey - SK
Having been away on holiday, I've only just learned of Don's passing. As others have said, a real shock, and a loss to the hobby. I never had the privelege of meeting Don in person, and my direct contact with him was limited to a number of e-mails, but I always appreciated his friendliness, and his positive attitude no matter the circumstances. He'll certainly be missed, both on this list, and in the hobby more generally.
