[IRCA] Harry Helms Passes
Sorry to hear about Harry. Although I never met him in person, I corresponded with off on for 40 years. He was quite a guy. Thanks, John, for passing along the information and email from his cousin. I received this e-mail from Cheryl Ervin Hill. George Zeller Cleveland, OH E-MAIL: Harry Lee Helms, Jr., my first cousin and good friend, passed away on Sunday, November 15th, around 11:00 pm. He was 57. As you probably know, he has bravely fought an aggressive cancer for the last several years. For the past few months he and his wife Di have lived in his home town of Fort Mill, SC, surrounded and loved by his extended family, old friends, and his dogs and cats. I asked Harry recently how I could be useful to him in the final days, so he sent me a short list of friends to contact when the end came. I probably do not know you personally, but I know that you have to be a special sort of person to make the list. Please know that this message is an act of love from Harry to you at the end of his amazing life. We ask that you remember him now as you knew him in years past. I believe that he would have me remind you to recognize your life's passion and let it guide you always. Our family will gather together informally later this week to find some closure for ourselves and to wish him peace. Harry was one of a kind. We will miss him greatly. Hi Everyone: Sorry to hear about Harry. I always looked forward to getting reports from him when I was EDXR editor, and recall his DXWW reports as well. I met him once, at thee 1971 Toledo convention. He seemed like a really great guy, quiet-spoken and courteous. I am the same age as he was. My prayers are with his family. Re: [IRCA] Harry Helms Passes
Saddened to hear this. He was the first DXer I ever wrote. I'd received a sample copy of DX Monitor in March of 1970 and noticed his submissions. I asked him in a letter if he could recommend a good receiver as I'd decided to become a DXer like the other guys (and one gal) in that issue of DXM. He replied and recommended Radio Shack's Realistic TRF, mentioning good results Bruce Bacon and George Sherman, among others, were having with it. I've often shuddered to think what overpriced mediocrities I might have sprung for without his advice, as I knew nothing about electronics. He was only a high school senior then. A DXer's friend indeed. Re: [IRCA] Harry Helms Passes
A sad piece of news. I felt a bit connected to Harry over the years as we were both high school members of NRC in the 60's - he in Fort Mill SC and me a recent Chicago transplant to Atlanta. Later on, Harry's technical writing led him into areas related to what I do for a living so I occasionally kept up with him. But what I admired most about Harry was how he wrote about his ordeals in an emotionally open way, but still remaining very calm. He refused to hide anything or fall prey to any of the dishonesties that are often easier to say. He also managed to convey his feelings about his disease in a way that made me respect his strength and never feel he was feeling too sorry for himself althugh he had a right to feel that way. I will remember Harry and wish he was still here.
