Re: [IRCA] KFI 640 is now IBOC

2009-04-09 Thread Patrick Martin
Keven,

Your observations are close to mine also. KSL & KFBK are terrors for
IBOC at night. Even here at 70 miles from KEX, they aren't a big deal.
Much stronger than KFI, but not the KSL signal at night. Phasing KEX
during the day also gives me KLAY 1180 & RJ 1200 fairly good, too. SK
often tears up KEX at night these days. After 620 co-located with KEX,
their signal went down a lot. KEX used to be a pretty strong powerhouse
running 50 KW directional this way, but they sure aren't any longer. I
would be much more concerned if KIRO or KJR went IBOC!

Re: [IRCA] KFI 640 is now IBOC

2009-04-09 Thread satya
Hey Patrick:

I just looked, and KFI is 977 miles from my QTH, so that appears to be far
enough, and/or propagation from LA is poor (KNX-1070 is not that strong
here either, and San Diego stations are rare, so I'm guessing the
latter...). Close comparison of 650's sidebands last night showed that
there was some noise from KFI, but not that much.

KSL-1160, on the the other hand, is 698 miles away and manages to
obliterate 1150 & 1170, while 1530-KFBK is 608 miles away and totals 1520
and 1540.

KEX-1190 gets out so poorly that, even though only 152 miles away, 1180 &
1200 are somewhat available.

2009-04-09 Thread Patrick Martin
Kevin,

At our distance KFI's IBOC is not an issue. The quality of their signal
here is not good. I never listen to any station at night running IBOC,
even KEX as the skip gets ahold of it and the audio echoes and sounds
awful. When KGO was IBOC for a time at night, they got tons of
complaints and dropped it. I don't know if KGO runs IBOC days though.
They aren't strong enough now during the day to tell. I used to listen
to CtoC on KFBK as they are strong in the NW, but not since they went
IBOC. I tune in on local KAST or KKOH Reno. Maybe KPNW Eugene.

The earlier reports from the LA/SD areas said their noise was so bad you
could even hear it under the KFI carrier.

2009-04-08 Thread satya
Hey Patrick:

When KFI first came on the air with their new antenna a few weeks
(months?) ago, they were blaring in up here, but they are noticeably
weaker these days, not much stronger than when they were on their back-up
antenna. In listening to KFI tonight, their audio sounds atrocious,
indicating they are IBOCing. I can't say I notice their IBOC some 1200
miles to the north, although I have a strong local on 630 that covers up
the lower digital sideband noise and enough occupants on 650 to make the
upper digital sideband manageable.

KFI seems weaker now. 640 is dominated by SS ATM. IBOC hiss now noted on 650

Got the word that KFI turned on their IBOC. I can barely notice a slight
amount of hiss on 630 off the SW EWE and none on 650, KSTE is stronger.
Being nearly 1,000 miles from LA and no antenna really pointed to the
SSE. KFI is weaker here than with their old tower that fell. KNX is
still the strongest LA area station here. I do notice their IBOC, but
not much. The only concern I have is with the splits.
