Re: [IRCA] KPIG

2010-02-26 Thread Donald K. Kaskey
I like KPIG's programming of Alternate rock/country/whatever and it is
more or less local programming. They relay the original FM from Freedom
(Watsonville) but many bay area ads heard. At night if I want to listen
for pleasure I usually listen to their stream as KGA cuts into their
signal way too much to be able to enjoy KPIG.

50 kW to 15 kW at night). It's using very low power - I could barely
make it out from Palo Alto when I was there a few weeks ago - but it's
there, and might be a catch for someone who's usually outside its
tight night pattern.

2010-02-26 Thread Patrick Martin
Hi Don,

Yes, I do have KPIG QSL'd from a couple years back. Infact I first QSL'd
1510 back in 1968 under KTIM. The GM and President mentioned he was in
Seaside many times as a boy. I have them QSL'd under several other calls
too, KCAF, KMZT, KTID, KAPX, KKHI, KJQI. They were stronger when they
were 1 KW ND. KPIG does come in the afternoons at times, though.

Re: [IRCA] KPIG

2010-02-26 Thread Donald K. Kaskey

Thanks Pete,

I didn't expect KPIG to get out much as their signal crosses over S.F.
and heads out to the whales & herrings. KWUN-1480-Concord had to be one
of the least heard & reported stations in the west. When I lived in
Sacto I had to drive down I-80 to where I was directly north of Concord
(about 15-20 miles) to begin hearing their signal. The further west I
went the louder they became. KVRE (now KRRS) 1460 was as bad. I had to
take the Black Point Cut-Off (State 37) from Vallejo to Novato before I
could hear them. Of course KXOA on 1470 didn't help at all. Even in
the 60s-70s they were a horrendous splatterer with their rock music.
The Santa Clara station on 1430 puts most of its signal out to sea but
has a tad going north toward S.F. Was next to impossible to hear from
Sacto because of local KJAY + Fresno, Ogden et al. Easy from S.F. altho
not ever a very strong signal & quite often gets lost behind all the
others at night.

Don

p.s. I remember a few years back when Mike Hawkins & I were hearing the
Palm Springs area stations nightly on 1250 & 1270 and 1140 & 920 at
times as well. I think Mike also heard the 970 station but I didn't. I
had heard KCHV-970 from Sacto in the 60s when they were all alone on 970
running an all night show. Always very weakly heard. dkk

Pat,

Do you or others in the Great NorthWest pick up KPIG in Piedmont CA on 1510.
They, like Concord once did, are located in the East Bay and beam their signal
directly at San Francisco. I get a lot of Spokane at night over/under KPIG.
