[IRCA] KRSN 1490

2012-01-30 Thread Patrick Martin
I got a letter back from the KRSN test and the tones I heard did not
match their sweep tones. Nothing on the CD matched their programming. Oh
well, it was worth a shot. A nice bumper sticker and fridge magnet was
enclosed, so that was nice. Hopefully when they test again, I can give
it another shot.

Interesting. I wonder if we did hear the test? Then. I am glad I am not

[IRCA] KRSN 1490's DX test

2012-01-22 Thread Rick Dau
And I didn't even think about going after it here, since the tower of KOMJ-1490
is roughly two miles WSW of my QTH (Carl Mann, out in west Omaha, had a better
shot at it, but told me he still had to do a very tight null on KOMJ just to
get anything).  The night wasn't a total bust for me, though, as I got KJJQ-910
(on day power with South Dakota State Univ. BKB) and XEMR-1140 for entries #688
and #689 in the logbook here.  And KFAB is back to being IBOC-less.

Chances of hearing the KRSN 1490 DX test would have been difficult enough
at my distance to start with. However, they are made all but impossible due
to  the splatter of local WLMV 1480 with its Latin music format. In order to
null  this splatter out I have to turn the loop so that it points SE/NW, or
almost 90  degrees from what is needed, effectively nulling KRSN along with
WLMV. Still,  just for the record I did try hearing this test on Sunday
morning (Saturday  morning was spent listening to 880 with WCBS off-air). No
luck.

Tried a different approach in Victoria. Watched my Perseus at 25 kHz

Captured this with the snip-it tool. Anyone else hear a tone at that
time? Otherwise, possibilities of weak CW. Also heard one sweep at
07:01:10 or so. Maybe all wishful thinking! Thanks again for the

another UNID station in the background. Something resembling very slow
morse code followed at 07:07 UTC which was also visible at +/- 4.9 kc
(wasn't exactly 5.0) on the waterfall, but no chance of copying anything
meaningful. I wish reception had been slightly better, I'm on the fence on

Re: [IRCA] KRSN 1490 DX Test

2012-01-20 Thread Bob Coomler
Talk about pulling teeth.  Local KFFN, 5.3 miles away, made it just a week bit
difficult!  The tightest null I could get was almost north-south which was
about 45 degrees from ideal. This was with my ULR Tecsun PL-310. I did hear
high pitched sweep tones, phone off the hook tone and code that was only
semi-audible until the very end and even then didn't get much copy.  From what
I assume was the closing announcement, several mentions of Los Alamos, New
Mexico were noted.  So ... it's going in the log with thanks to all
responsible.  Also had a Fox News station fade up to a respectable level, but
no ID. Given the direction and programming, assume this was KYCA, but it won't
go in the log.

[IRCA] KRSN-1490 test

2012-01-20 Thread Bruce Portzer
I may have had a few faint bits of Morse Code on 1485 kHz. At least
that's how it looked on the receiver's waterfall display, and sounded to
my ears. But there wasn't enough there to remotely constitute an ID,
and it was probably just wishful thinking on my part. It was also much
slower than the advertised 20 wpm, more like 5 wpm, so I have my
doubts. Otherwise, there was no sign of them.

I'll try again tomorrow.

KRSN-1490 Los Alamos, NM test made it here quite easily in null of my
local KXRE-1490 Manitou Springs, CO at midnight-12:10 AM MST 1/21, with
various combinations of code ID's, sweep tones, and vocal ID's, quite
dominant, first 1/2 of test seemed stronger than 2nd half, ran lower
power?? This test should've gotten out well, will send report to
station. I'm ~ 290 miles from Los Alamos.

I just tuned the R8 to 1490. Hopefuly I can catch the test this time.
The test i could not hear I am not sure if the SW EWE or the Eastern

The Beverage may be too directional to the East. But it gets KKOB.

Listened for the KRSN-1490 test, from 0300-0310 EST, but only a bunch of

tones. Thought I caught a couple of IDs from other stations and will
re-check the tape later today. Mileage here would have been about 1625

2007-01-28 Thread Tim Hall
TRH-CA Tim Hall, Chula Vista ICF-2010, Kiwa Loop

DX TESTS:

1490 KRSN NM Los Alamos1/28 0303 Fair signals, quite solid at
times over UNID ESPN station (probably Tucson) with sweep tones and fast
code IDs "VVV DE KRSN KRSN" etc. Noted again around 0306 and 0309 but
strongest at 0303 (when the recorder jack on my '2010 shorted out and ruined
the recording; this has been a chronic problem with this receiver and I must
get it fixed...). New; I now have all three 1490s in NM. (TRH-CA)

(Thanks to Mike and everyone else who helped make this test happen! I may
have to stay up another hour to see if I can get a better recording).
