[IRCA] More EWE questions

2008-09-02 Thread BARRY DAVIES
Hello IRCA'ers
Can anyone tell me if it would be of benefit to increase the height of the
upright poles from 10 feet to 12 feet. 12 feet would be the maximum "her
indoors" would allow hi! What, if any, would be the advantage?

Barry,
"More wire, higher" is usually better, but it may be hard to tell the
difference between an existing 10' height and 12'. I would go with as much
height as I could string up, however, and would not chose 10' over 12'
unless limited by physical restrictions. In picking up weak signals, there
are so many other factors involved that there would be no way to tell if the
signal you heard on the 12' antenna system could not have been heard on the
10' system unless both were operable at the same time for comparison.

Both of my EWEs are better than 20 feet in height and moving them from
18 feet to 22-25 feet did make a difference. I wish I had the trees to
make them 50 feet in height.

Re: [IRCA] More EWE questions

2008-09-02 Thread John H. Bryant

Barry,

Think of your EWE as the upper half of a loop antenna... the other
half is reflected in the ground. If you raise your EWE from 10' to
12' that is really adding 4 feet to its total height. The gain of a
loop is directly proportional to its area. In the ham world, its
somewhat controversial whether a EWE really acts like half-a-loop,
but I've proved it with rather careful experimentation So, figure
your loop area both ways and that percent change in area is,
proportionally, about how much more gain you will have.

Barry,
This "gain" stuff may be old hat to you, but here is what a buddy wrote
about gain and interpreting decibels. It's at the bottom of the article:

I'm also sending you and John by email a pdf of the original article on the
EWE by the inventor. If anyone else wants it, drop me note.
