2011-09-13 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
For once, I don't live right AT or near an AM transmitter site.

Ive lived AT the sites for WMEL 1300 Cocoa, FL(5KW)... DWQMA-1520 Marks,
MS(250W)WWNH 1340 Madbury, NH(1KW) and WABV 1590, Abbeville, SC(1KW)

Now, my nearest AM is about 10 air miles away with 1KW on 1400.

I'm within a couple of miles of three directional AMs: my own WXXI 1370,
WHTK 1280 (both 5 kW) and WROC 950 (1 kW). A fourth, WHIC 1460, moved to
a different (and more distant) site a few years ago.

It could be worse - I grew up right between the 1460 and 1370 sites,
within a few hundred yards of each!

The problem for me now is not AM, but FM.

I can see the antenna bays for Class A WJNG 100.5(1300 Watts) and Class B
WKBI 93.9 (2300W) from my backdoor, the tower is only about 2 blocks away.
There's a CP for a non commercial station on the same tower.

On top of high-power AMs, RF and IBOC splatter, I am also 0.4 miles away
from KCSM-FM/91.1 with 14 KW of IBOC. Even the squirrels radiate around

Hi Dennis,

Here where I live between Seaside and Astoria my closest locals:

KAST-1370-1KW-Astoria-5.6 MI-S9+35
KKEE-1230-1 KW-Astoria-7.01 MI-S9+38
KSWB-840-1/.5KW-Seaside-8.8 MI-S9+38

The signals vary depending on what antenna I use. Like KSWB is S9+38 off
the WSW EWE, but on the NE EWE is is S9+18 DB. Those above S meter
reading are the strongest. All locals can be phased mostly out at night.

I listen to day timer KNBA 1190 and the horse race recreations with Bill Terry
from
Dee O'Connor Publications in the 60's and early 70's.  KNBA would end their
sign-off announcement with stay tune for KEX Portland.  KEX would boom in the
SF Bay Area.  A clever way to keep your local listener tuned to your frequency
when
they turned their radio on the next day.

Re: [IRCA] Nearest locals

2011-09-14 Thread Tim Hills

Ouch Dennis,

I have a few pests myself that make DXing a bit of a challenge at times.

KXRB 1000 10KW /100Wt, both directional, 5 miles
KSOO 1140 10KW ND/5KW Dir. 4 miles
KELO 1320 5KW ND/Dir. 3 miles

The directional patterns of those 3 converge in my living room.
Last winter I heard Niel Boortz ranting about something or another on
the chain link fence (KSOO) and country music coming from the toaster
(KXRB). Maybe I should have sent reception reports ;)

There's also 2 low power stations
KWSN 440W ND day/night at 6 miles
KZOY 500W ND day only, listed as 6 miles but more like 1 1/2 miles. I
can see their 400' tower from my kitchen window when the trees are bare.

We also have a 1W transmitter on 1620 on the other side of town but I
have yet to log it at this location.

On the upper SW bands I've had problems from the KELO TV 2000' tower
about 7 miles away., 2 full power TV stations and a low power
translator, 3 (4?) FM and the NOAA station plus State repeaters and who
knows what else.

Finally got the last parts in for my receiver project. Hoping to be
doing some serious DXing this weekend.

2011-09-14 Thread John Sampson
Closest local here in Grand Rapids is KOZY (1320); their tx is about 7½ miles
from me. Not much of a problem at night (I've been able to null them to hear
KELO and WILS in the past). Next closest is WNMT (650) Nashwauk, about 30
miles. Worst problems now are digital hash leaking from the DSL and in-house
electrical noise thanks to new solid state stuff. A sidelight; when we lived
in Winston-Salem, we could see one of the WSJS (600) towers (3 - 4 miles from
us) from our upstairs bedroom. Fortunately, I was in one of their nulls and
they presented no problem. The red light on their tower also proved quite
useful on Christmas Eve; I told our children that it might be Rudolph and that
provided a good incentive for them to hurry to bed. - John

DSL causes noise? I have heard there is no issue with DSL from some
others. Maybe I am stuck with 28.8 dial forever here? Or the 6Gs for
Verizon Wireless? The Cable here radiates terribly. That is why I still
don't have it for my computer.

Good catch for KELO, your on a side lobe of their array.
Greg Belfrage does the QSLs there by email. the "contact us" link on
keloam.com goes to his inbox.

I've eliminated most of the computer/network generated noise here by
setting a laptop up for internet sharing through the wireless card, no
router just a cablemodem that seems to behave itself for RF emissions.
My worst problems now are a plasma TV on one side and an old
Heath/Zenith motion detecting light on the other of me.

Hi Patrick. He probably meant the gear associated with DSL service...that
usually includes some form of router (aka "Hash Generator")

Another fabulous noise-box is the set-top converter for digital TV!

DSL causes noise? I have heard there is no issue with DSL from some
others. Maybe I am stuck with 28.8 dial forever here? Or the 6Gs for
Verizon Wireless? The Cable here radiates terribly. That is why I still
don't have it for my computer.

Mark,

I have lots of satellite gear, 6 different satellite receivers and 4
dishes in the backyard and if you get within 6 feet of the receivers,
they do generate digital hash, but move away, there is no noise.
No noise detected on the R8 from any of the satellite gear 20 feet away.
The Charter Cable in the neighborhood really causes TVI though. The
neighbors with Dish or Direct TV I get no noise from them.
OK, on the DSL. Routers can be noisy I have read. Not having one, I
have no experience with them.

Re: [IRCA] Nearest locals

2011-09-14 Thread Mark Durenberger Mobile
At my lake cabin I have an Apex (Best Buy) digital converter...getting
over-the-air TV from a rooftop antenna. Hash is generated that goes right
up the coax to the antenna (and radiates along the way).

I was able to eliminate it by building an "RF Choke"...winding 11 turns of
the coax through 5 toroid rings. Placed the choke right next to the Apex.

You're right; satellite downlinks seem to be relatively clean.

Almost every router I've tried (Linksys/Cisco among them) generate(s) a lot
of hash...and that seems to travel along the associated data cables to/from
computers...again acting like antennas. It's depressing to pass a pocket
portable near these cables.

I'll have to try the "RF Choke" idea on the Comcast cable feed...will let
you know what happens.

Here are my nearest locals, within 10 miles:

6.3 mi N - 1130 KSDO - 10kW DA-2 (indicates about 75 dBu on my Tecsun PL-606
outdoors)
7.3 mi NW - 760 KFMB - 5kW/50kW DA-N (my strongest at night, indicating about
80-82 dBu on my Tecsun PL-606 outside, day ~70-72 dBu)
7.7 mi W - 600 KOGO - 5kW DA-1 IBOC (indicates about 68 dBu on my PL-606)
8.3 mi W - 1360 KLSD - 5kW/1kW ND (approx 69-70 dBu daytime on my PL-606)
9.3 mi N - two diplexers:
1170 KCBQ - 50kW/2.9kW DA-2 (my strongest during the day - ~80-81 dBu on
the PL-606; night approx ~63-65 dBu)
910 KECR - 5kW DA-2 (approx 64-66 dBu day, 69-71 dBu night on the PL-606)

The most powerful signal in my local area is that of 77kW/50kW DA-2 XEWW-690,
about 32 mi SW of me.  On the PL-606 they're about 68-69 dBu daytime, and
several dB less at night.  My nearest GY is 1240 KNSN about 11.2 miles west of
me, running 550 watts into a 201.9° tower.  Also diplexing with them is
360W/61W 1040 KURS.  Both stations are pretty much "in the clear" at night
here, although nulling them (especially 1240) can reveal chatter underneath.
My nearest 50kW clear is 640 KFI at about 99 miles, but the strongest here (at
least in the daytime) is 1070 KNX at 111 miles.  My strongest TIS is 1620
WNSB415 at about 15 miles SW.  With a longwire (translation: holding it up to a
utility pole ground wire) and Select-A-Tenna coupled to the PL-606, it almost
sounds like a nearly noise-free local-grade signal.

Hey anyone have ideas on what inexpensive pocket portables (Sony SRF-59 doesn't
quite cut it) would be good for groundwave DXing at my grandma's house east of
L.A.? ;) Desired daytime targets include, but are not limited to 1100 KFNX Cave
Creek AZ, 1290 KKDD San Bernardino CA or KZSB Santa Barbara CA, 1310 XEC
Tijuana MX or KIQQ Barstow CA, 1420 XEXX Tijuana MX, 1440 KFNY Riverside CA or
KUHL Santa Maria CA  - preferably armchair copy without splatter or
blocking/desense. :)
Oh, I should mention ... a few of the numerous pests near her house include:
1430 KMRB - 50kW/9.8kW DA-2 - 1/3 mi NW
1300 KAZN - 23kW/1kW DA-2 - 1/3 mi NW day (diplexes with KMRB), ~3 mi N night
(2-site operation), but still sounds strong enough at night like they're using
the nearby site instead of the one 3 miles away
1110 KDIS - 50kW/20kW DA-2 IBOC - 4.6 mi E
Local stations I have trouble receiving there with the PL-380 and PL-606
include, but are not limited to 1230 KYPA, 1260 KGIL, 1280 KFRN, 1330 KWKW,
1390 KLTX (the best of the bunch), 1460 KTYM, 1480 KVNR, to some extent 1580
KBLA, and 1650 KFOX.

the extra ground they had since LAX and environs is so big

Hey steve...

Do you have any info on Lax air 530? It fades up in the muck of stations around
sunset. Call letters, power?? It's amazing how many stations are on that
channel not forgetting the stuff that comes across the water.

Re: [IRCA] Nearest locals

2011-09-19 Thread Rick Dau
Tim, I believe this is the first time I've seen you post on this listserver.
Nice to have you along for the ride.  :)

Nearest locals for me are the dual threat of KKAR-1290 and KOZN-1620, whose
xmtr site is at 60th & Harrison in Omaha, about 2 air miles SW of my QTH.  Go
about another 3 miles south of there, and the next closest monster is KFAB,
with 50 kw, and all that IBOC

But things are going to get better for me shortly.  End of next week, I move to
a new location about 2 miles due south of downtown Omaha.  It will be roughly 2
miles east and 2 1/2 miles north of where I'm at right now, so KKAR, KOZN, and
KFAB will be lesser headaches, although I will be a bit closer to
KOIL-1180.  KOTK-1420 and KLNG-1560, whose towers are off South Omaha Bridge
Road on the south edge of Council Bluffs, won't be any more pests than they are
now.

Here is my list.  I have ten AM stations within 15 miles.

5.1 mi WMCS 1290 Greenfield WI
9.2 mi WSSP 1250 Milwaukee
10.5 mi WOKY 920 Milwaukee
11.1 mi WJTI 1460 West Allis
11.1 mi WGLB 1560 Elm Grove, same site as 1460
12.1 mi WJYI 1340 Milwaukee
12.3 mi WRJN 1400 Racine
12.6 mi WISN 1130 Milwaukee
13.5 mi WNOV 860 Milwaukee
14.6 mi WTMJ 620 Milwaukee

My closest station, though, is a long wave beacon, MK 410, at 2.9 miles.  And
my closest unheard remains WNTA 1330 Rockford IL, at 73.8 miles.

Re: [IRCA] Nearest locals

2011-09-20 Thread Todd
My nearest local is the dipole split of WREY 630/ WCTS 1030. With them being
just about 3 miles SE, WREY has serious over/mod issues and WCTS'S 50kw day pwr
makes these two the hardest to dx around.

My next closest is 900 KTIS, 1220 KLBB, and daytimer 740 WDGY at about 10
miles away. None are an issue, especially at night.

The last one worth mentioning, is 1500 KSTP. Their daytime signal at 15 miles
really chops up 1490 and 1510. At night though only 250 watts or so comes my
way.
