trade-out. I just got home last night from a 16 day stay in the cardiac
critical care unit. I'm now sporting $25,000 worth of implanted
pacemaker / automatic defribrillator equipment and a warning to stay out
of high RF environments.

Congratulations!  While he may not be an Ultralight, his first radio
should be.  I would suggest the Sony SRF-85 - it's a pretty yellow, it has
lots of safe rounded corners, and water (and drool and you-know-what...)
