Re: [IRCA] New MW QSL
I never heard KPIK, I don't believe. I may have, but I would have QSL'd them I would think, as I try to QSL every new station I hear. CO is easier than AZ stations and I do have a few GYers from CO too. I think I am at 52 or 53 CO QSL's. A few call changes in there too and a defunct station or two. Re: [IRCA] New MW QSL (KBRV 800)
I would need to look but I bet at least half of my QSLs in the past 9 years are prepared cards. A few professionally printed cards but several homemade type QSLs. Very few letters on professionally printed letterhead but many on plain paper and some of them have station logos added. The problem with prepared cards is they are unique and I have many that weren't even signed. There are still DXer friendly stations so don't stop sending reports. I know the cost is around $1 for me to send a report and with a follow up it could cost a couple dollars for a QSL so it's important to send a professional letter and check QSL lists for v/s information. Hope to see more QSLs reported. There is no substitute for opening an envelope and seeing a nice new QSL card or verification letter. The QSL cards made for KRSN 1490 look terrific. I'm happy to have one in my collection. Mike, It is easy to design something yourself, but the old letter from the station is always especially nice. I scanned a business card for the logo on the KRSN QSL cards (example: http://mesamike.org/radio/mwdx/KRSN/DXTest-2012/KRSN-DXTest-2012-QSL_card.jpg), which I laser-printed onto card stock. You don't even have to go to all of that trouble. You can get logo info off the websites often. I have done that in the past. Re: [IRCA] New MW QSL (KBRV 800)
That is true. By that logic it is to the DXers benefit to have the ability to print up his own ppc. On Facebook, Eric B. showed us a nice example of one he made a while back. (I believe it was WGIL in Illinois)... One little trick of the trade to try in verifying stations that don't have qsl cards, is to write to the sales department and get a media kit containing cover letter on station letterhead, take that cover letter down to a good copy center with color copiers (if there is color in the station logo). Cover up all of the writing with thick white paper (leaving the logo, address, etc...at the top exposed to be copied. (8-1/2 x 11" worth will suffice). You should end up with one (or more) nice blank pieces of station letterhead. Then use either your computer & printer, or typewriter for those who still own one, and write up a nice verification letter on the sheet (leaving a space at the bottom for the good ol' boy to sign his John Hancock). Always provide a legal sized! S.A.S.E. for return. (If the media kit you received was a small one and came in a legal sized envelope, you can use that to keep your verie in---or some folks like to keep veries in presentation portfolio books). Downside: these days some stations may no longer even mail out sales kits, but rather refer you to all their information online. It's always worth the extra effort to get that prized verification for your catch. ---Mike Sanburn > From: mwd...@webtv.net > To: irca@hard-core-dx.com > Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2013 18:57:04 -0700 > Subject: Re: [IRCA] New MW QSL (KBRV 800) > > I think with stations not having access to letterhead, they QSL on anything > they can. Re: [IRCA] New MW QSL (KBRV 800)
Mike, I have a few like that. Stations don't seem to have access to letterhead as easily and a message on a bumper stick can double as a QSL.One of the first ones I got like that was KNOR 1400 Norman OK many years ago. I have also gotten QSL messages on post-its too. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin Seaside OR KGED QSL Manager > From: mikesanb...@hotmail.com > To: irca@hard-core-dx.com > Date: Sun, 27 Oct 2013 04:01:12 -0700 > Subject: Re: [IRCA] New MW QSL (KBRV 800) > > Congrats on the KBRV qsl. Jim, A really nice QSL card, like the ones we used to get years ago. The pix of the tx site with the snowcapped mountain behind it is fantastic. This is what our hobby is all about. The neat stations that go to the trouble to run DX tests and then to get such a nice QSL card. There have been several of those lately too. The turn around time was excellent. From the OR coast to Ferndale is two days and back again, another two days. He must have replied the day get out the report, and mailed it back. I mailed it out on Monday. Nigel, Great. There are really no non-verifiers per se. Any station can QSL in the future. KDAC Ft. Bragg CA was a good example of that. Glad to hear that Patrick.Looks like I should be sending them a f/up! I got a long-sought one today too. KLVZ, 810 in CO, hadn't replied to earlier reports in 2006 and 2008, but 2012 was the lucky year, as today I got not one, but two verie letters from them in response to a Jan report. One was from Mike Triem, Station Manager, and the second was from Amanda Alexander, Chief Engineer. Perhaps reporting in Jan soon after their return to the air helped out. 73, Nigel Pimblett Dunmore, Alberta On 17/02/2012 1:54 PM, Patrick Martin wrote: It has been an amazing month for QSLs. [IRCA] New MW QSL (KBCV)
1570 KBCV MO, Hollister, rec a very friendly letter on BRN stationary along with bumper stickers for a SASE. V/S: Paul Schneider-Op Mgr in SW Missouri. Mentioned KBCV only runs 1,000 watts (not 3,000) at night and 5,000 watts day. Address: Bott Radio Network, S. Glenstone Ave, Suite 3-102, Springfield MO 65804. This made my day! QSL #24 from MO and total #3022. (PM-OR) Even with XERF boosting to 100KW a few years back, 1570 is still a good frequency here and with the possibility of CKMW going to FM, the frequency will even be better, baring any NW station that might move there. >>Hi Patrick, I see that you have a long beverage. I have a shorty, about 500 feet. I set it up yesterday as I do each year, but for some reason this time I am picking up some locals about 20 miles away on some LW frequencies that I don't remember in past years. Nothing is different in my setup except the lead in coax is 75ohms and not 50. That would not make that much of difference would it? Do you get some locals on your wire? It seems worse during the day, when stations are ND and full power, but it is distressing. Thanks. George in Virginia<< Great to hear from you. Fortunately I don't have any strong locals. KSWB 840 kHz 1000w/500wND 9 miles South KKEE-1230 kHz 1000w ND 7 miles North, behind a hill, and my closest KAST 1370 kHz 1000w U2 5.7 miles to the NE. All locals no issues, even the SW EWE that has a lobe to the South/SW (KSWB), so no images or harmonics here. All can be nulled or phased out at night to hear other stations. Plus the beverage runs to the East an there are no locals in that direction. The salt air has eaten away a ot of the grounding of the locals through the years. Especially the two Astoria stations (KKEE & KAST) do not get out like they did 30-40 years ago. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin Seaside OR KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] New MW QSL (KCFM)
Dennis, I have no clue why the change over, but it sounds like they had to move and since they did, they had to do a different type of antenna because is possible interference. It sounds that way from the letter. Possible they were leasing the land from where their old tower was and lost the lease. That is what happened with KODL The Dalles. They had to come up with a longwire. That lasted for several years. They finally got towers in the last couple of years. I don't know about KCFM, but if is possible. The signal is nearly the same. But at 150+ air miles from here, 1250 is rather weak at times. Florence is on the Central coast and I am the Northern Coast. If they had 5KW, I would hear them better. KWRO-630-Coquille on the South coast at wel over 200 miles, is strong off the SW EWE. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] New MW QSL (KCFM)
I always wondered if anyone was using a Kintronics Kinstar system. Do they get out as well as before? After putting in the Kinstar they had to decrease day power from 1 KW to 900 watts and nighttime power from 68 watts to 37 watts. Why? Was the ground system at their old site really messed up and this one is so much better that they'd cover more area if they ran the same amount of power? They didn't move very far; a little over 2 kilometers. There's a whole lot of top loading going on here. The system does eventually add up to a quarter wavelength (90 degrees electrical height) but 61.2 degrees of that is top loading. The dealbreaker for me is that even though the towers are a lot shorter there have to be four of them instead of one and they still have to have a traditional quarter wavelength ground system; 120 quarter wavelength (60 meters) copper wires spaced three degrees apart and 60 meters long. Their new site still occupies as much land as the old one. I swiped some of this from the Engineering Statement: https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getattachment_exh.cgi?exhibit_id=632436&formid=301&q_num=5000 - Original Message - From: "Patrick Martin" To: ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; Sent: Monday, October 26, 2009 6:04 PM Subject: [IRCA] New MW QSL (KCFM) After having such a long dry spell, since May, I received MW QSL #3006 in todays mail. 1250KCFM OR, Florence, received very friendly letter in 6 days for CD report. from Jon Thompson-GM/Owner.
