Re: [IRCA] : OT Locksmith duties
Thank you Walt. I was hoping for your comments, being a Doctor. I don't have it in me to deal with such things on a regular basis. As it is, I should be in bed as it is 1:16 AM, and I only got 5:45 of sleep last night. I went to bed at 2:00 AM, but tossed and turned until about 3:30. Then I woke up at 9:15 So it was a rough night. Lucille was a nice lady. She will be missed. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Re: [IRCA] : OT Locksmith duties
Here's one way think of the situation - she was 92 years old and died at home. Probably rather quickly and suddenly. It's always unpleasant to find someone in such a situation, and age and such do not diminish sense of loss or your feelings stemming from all of this, but this may be as good as one's inevitable end will get. I have very elderly friends who live in the country, and they want to live out their years there, to the very end, rather than in a nursing home, seniors home, or hospital. This likely means the first to go will be found by their survivor, and that someone else will later find the survivor. Or maybe they will 'go' together - that happens. When I was working at daily newspapers as a reporter, the one thing I hated more than anything was car wrecks, ambulance chasing, etc... and to this day I think many of these stories are overdone in the news or at least often done in an inappropriately entertaining way. (Now I'm freelance and report stories I want to cover). Anyhow, Patrick, you've just performed a valuable service. Your neighbour's son probably suspected deep down what happened, and your easy availability and quick work hastened his inevitable discovery, and he wasn't alone at the time. Re: [IRCA] : OT Locksmith duties
Saul, Yes, I understand where you are coming from. Infact she drove her own car, did a little work out in her garden. She was in better shape than most at her age. One of her sons suggested a few years back that she move to a an apt where there were other elderly people, but she did not want to. She loved it here, and she got to live the life she wanted. Her health was generally quite well and she did fine. Oh yes, it was probaby heart failure that got her and she was found next to her bed. I had just walked by her house around 7:30 or so and she was watching TV. We all kept an eye on her as she was so elderly. I saw her out in her yard earlier in the day. So in the period from 7:30 or so until her son tried to reach her by phone after 9 PM sometime, it was only 1-2 hours. So she had not been gone long. But she was headed to bed, probably did not feel right. Lucille rarely went to bed before 1 or 2 AM and got up around 10-11 AM. She had that schedule for many years. So for her to get ready for bed, she must have felt really tired. But it looks like she never quite made it to her bed by what her son said. So you are right, she went quickly. We should all have that when our time comes. But still, it was rough to handle. Oh I am doing a lot better now. I was just the shock of going through it. Thanks Saul.

[IRCA] OT Locksmith duties
As many of you know, I am a lockmith on the Oregon Coast. I have been one for nearly 30 years. I took the business over from my father. Well, tonight I got a knock on my door, just as I was typing the KRRZ tip a bit ago. I answered it and it was my neighbor's son. He could not get an answer from knocking on his mothers front door. So, I called Lucile and no answer either. I grabbed my tools and headed over. I knocked, ran the doorbell, still nothing except I could hear her little dog barking. The screen door was locked from the inside. I got that open and picked her lock. Her son walked in and as I expected, he found his mother and she had passed. Lucille was a nice lady and she was nearly 92, but had been in good shape and was still diving her car. I knew her since we moved in 1981. So I am a bit upset tonight. Fortunately, I did not view the body as she had made it to her bedroom, but ended up on the floor out of sight. I don't handle things like this very well after losing both of my parents and partner. However, I guess it is a locksmith's job, the good and the bad. Maybe I should not have posted it here, but I had to tell someone.

Hi Patrick, I'm sorry to hear about your neighbors passing..I too don't handle those type of situations very well either. There have been 6 deaths including my father in the last 3 years and they were all close neighbors. I hope you feel better soon. Patrick Sorry too to hear about your experience, Patrick. As a physician, of course we deal with death on a very frequent basis, and spend some of our time pronouncing someone as deceased. When I was a young doctor, I found this particularly hard when the RCMP, or Military Police, or coroner would call me to a scene. For some strange reason, they seemed to enjoy sending me into a homicide or suicide or drowning unattended...often at night or in bad weather. I never new what I would see, and I was always glad to exit the scene. Even today, going to a seniors residence to pronounce, which still occasionally occurs is not my happiest moment, especially when the family is there. Of course, what you witnessed is far more difficult, as a friend/family member only just discovers the deceased. In my case, the family is already informed, and the nursing staff has usually prepared the body somewhat for them. Still, never easy. For me, thankfully, usually an RN can pronounce and I just have to issue the medical certificate of death. Hang in there, Patrick.
