Tom….That sounds like the old Low Powered WHYP AM/FM from North East, Pa.
James Brownyard was the Owner, Operator, DJ, CE, and Custodian. he would get on
the air in the morning, and would read the newspaper to Listeners for Local
News. He would look out the Window and tell them what the Weather Report was.
Often times he put an an Album side and would then go out and cut the grass or
go Grocery Shopping and the record would play to the end of the side , then
Skip for an hour til he got home to flip it over!! You could hear his Dog
barking in the background, and things being moved in the House or Papers being
rustled around.

I loved listening to WHYP "WHIP-RADIO", because you just never knew what was
going to happen today!!??

They don't make stations like that anymore.

WHYP AM on 1530 Khz is now WMCE-AM from North East, PA and WHYP-FM is now
WRKT-FM (Rocket 101) from Erie!!

Sure do miss those Days!!

A Shortwave PIRATE Station now memorializes these two great Radio Stations with
broadcasts from time to time!!

[IRCA] Off Topic - Local Joliet Radio History - WAJP FM

2016-08-25 Thread amdxer
Today in the paper is an obituary for Mary Jane Pohlers,
who helped put Joliet's first FM station on the air in
1960. I recall listening to this station, WAJP shortly
after it came on the air with Al Pohlers, Mary's husband,
as the announcer. The programming sounded "home made" and
probably operated from a studio in their home. They aired
local programing including a Polka show. Occasionally
when Al was on the air he would say "Mary, can you please
get me another cup of coffee" and in the background you
would hear her weak reply, probably from the kitchen "Yah,
just wait a minute and I'll bring you a cup."
