[IRCA] Puyallup, WA TP's for 11-10... Big Improvement
Hello All, The morning TP propagation was restored to excellent levels here, providing one of the best DXing sessions so far in November. The first sign of good conditions was three stations mixing on 738 kHz at 1435 (Taiwan Fisheries, HLKG and an UnID Chinese), when I was attempting to make an MP3 of the new PL-380's DSP selectivity. The frequency was a real TP graveyard channel until Taiwan took over at 1440, for the MP3. VOR-648 (with its Chinese language program) also had a booming signal at 1448, and is no doubt the Chinese station that John heard this morning. Its signal was also strong enough to record an alternate PL-380 DSP filter MP3, with the new Tecsun model eliminating the final splatter from 650 kHz by tuning down to 647 (which is something new in the Ultralight DSP world, now that the soft mute function has been dropped). As John had already noted, the 594 kHz KBS1 Korean was mixing heavily with a weakened JOAK from 1450-1500, and the typical KBS music was occasionally dominating the frequency (for the first time this month). This continued until the TOH signals, with JOAK finally prevailing. The UnID Chinese was nowhere to be found, however. 585 kHz again had an UnID Chinese mixing with NHK1 JOPG, this time with Mandarin Chinese speech instead of music. Chuck Hutton sent me a recording of an UnID Chinese on 585 kHz made during a DXpedition, and it seems like I have come across the same mystery station. A high band search for 1503-JOUK again proved fruitless, with the high band in general not sharing in the propagation bonanza. Otherwise it was a pretty exciting morning. 73, Gary DeBock Spotting receiver: Modified ICF-2010 (30 loopstick) Main receiver (this morning): Tecsun PL-380 DSP Ultralight 9' and 6' (side) PVC tuned passive loops (in the back yard) ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Hello Nick, Thanks for your comments, and the logical tip. The UnID Chinese on 585 kHz (recorded at 1507 UTC) did indeed have the somewhat elderly-voiced male and female Chinese announcers typical of the VOR's Chinese service (on 648 kHz from 1400-1500). Their voices even sounded similar. Unfortunately I needed to cut short the marginal MP3 at 1510, to go somewhere else. For some reason, by 1507 the NHK1 JOPG station seemed to be completely gone from the frequency, maybe because of quirky propagation. The listed VOR station on 585 khz certainly has good transmitter power, but I don't recall seeing it in any TP reports. Anyway, I'll check for a 648 kHz parallel if this mystery Chinese station shows up tomorrow morning on 585. Thanks again for the tip. 73, Gary In a message dated 11/10/2009 2:56:35 P.M.
