Kinda is actually right ... It's a box that could get the X-band.

I'm not Nick but I've never had any trouble with customs or security in
spite of carrying suitcases full of radios, cables, phasing boxes, etc
to various DXpeditions. The only question I got was from a Canadian
customs agent who asked if my Drake R8 was some kind of X-box. Kinda
was the careful response. That was good enough.

 Yes...me to.

Simply an ALA100 antenna (so the the amplifier box and interface box plus wall
wart power supply), and an RFSpace SDR-14 plus its power supply plus a 220 to
110 volt converter (and of course the laptop computer, but those are mightily
common). The radio gear was in checked luggage.

No questions when the luggage was scanned for security on leaving Canada. Have
been in Qatar and United Arab Emirates now, and customs in each place only
involves another X-ray (?) scan of the luggage. In Qatar, they asked what the
electronic stuff was, and was satisfied with it's a radio.

So, no big deal so far.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] Qatar info

2010-02-20 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Well, couldn't hear Farda at home anymore, so I went to Qatar to do so.
Actually, we're visiting a daughter who lives here.

Am doing some SDR-14 recordings at tops of hour. However, if anyone wants a
specific station checked, let me know, and I'll see what I can find. The most
audible station here seems to be on 1170, presumably R. Sawa...

best wishes,

Nick

the loop over what can be heard. 1170 was a regular from Haida Gwaii after
Christmas this year.Walt

Re: [IRCA] Qatar info

2010-02-20 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Nick,

Both you and Walt sure seem to be racking up the frequent flyer miles
recently.

Like you noticed before leaving, 1575-Farda seems to have disappeared for
the season here, along with the other TA's. Unlike Walt's success in Haida
Gwaii, 1170-R.Sawa has never made it through the KPUG interference to be
heard here, with both stations on approximately the same loop bearing.

Have fun DXing in Qatar.
