[IRCA] Radio equipment for Sale

2019-01-09 Thread Bruce Portzer
I've been cleaning house recently and have decided to sell several items
that aren't being used anymore.

Icom IC-R75 receiver with UT-106 DSP module and FL-223 1900 Hz SSB
filter.  Includes owner's manual and power supply, as well as original
carton.  Some minor cosmetic blemishes but otherwise it's in good
condition and works well.  $440 + S/H.

Kiwa Loop Antenna, works great, includes manual, control unit, and wall
wart.  $380 + S/H.

Winradio Excalibur G31DDC, with original box, power supply, USB cable
and manual, plus 2 SMA-BNC adapter cables.  Works great. $600 + S/H

Hewlett Packard Spectrum Analyzer consisting of 141T mainframe, 8552A
I.F. Section, 8553A R.F  Section (1 kHz-110 MHz), and 8555A R.F Section
(10 MHz-18 GHz).  That's right - it covers all the way to 18 GHz!  It
also includes a set of Operation and Maintenance manuals.   In fair
condition cosmetically.  Believed to be in good operating condition but
I don't have the ability to check above 2.5 GHz.  Asking $225 + S/H.
It's rather large - the mainframe will ship in a wooden crate and other
items will be in a separate box,  so shipping costs might be significant.

Zenith Transoceanic,  Royal 3000 model, currently not working due to a
broken wire for the battery compartment.  It had distorted audio from
the speaker, but clean audio from aux output, when I bought it several
years ago.   In "fair" physical condition.  At this point, it's only
usable as a restoration project or parts source.  $10 + S/H.

Feel free to contact me offline if you're interested in any of the above
items.  Anything not sold here will be listed on E-Bay in the coming  weeks.

Bruce

[IRCA] Radio Nacional Saharaui off 1550, 702, 700

2018-07-29 Thread Glenn Hauser via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
** WESTERN SAHARA [non]. Polisario Front 1550 --- Glenn, I noticed 1550 is
silent since this past Friday, and the alternative frequencies of 702 (yes,
co-channel with Al-Aghwat, ALGERIA) or 700 aren't being used. RTA R. Al-Aghwat
is loud and clear here.

Now that they're off, I shall resume my almost daily observations of 1550 so as
to see what happens next. I wouldn't be surprised, if the station starts to
broadcast erratically at first, and then closes for good. However, the most
plausible cause is a tx malfunction. Good DX and 73, (Carlos Gonçalves,

Since WWCR is not on Medium Wave, you have shortwave signals bleeding in.
I first noticed this on a portable while living in New Canaan CT many years
ago. My antenna input was overloading the receiver. Jim Renfrew,

Since I have a 1240 local (WBAS) that is somewhat southerly of here, I won't
have a shot at this unless that station goes off.

Nulling WBAS gets me northerly stations such as WSYY Millinocket, ME.

What I could suggest is monitoring 1240 at various times of day on the Bonaire
KiwiSDR:
http://bonaire.twrmon.net:8073

Pete, were any TA's audible during your trip? How many US stations made it
down there? Any other comments about Caribbean / South America / Central
America stations not recently reported by East Coast DXpeditions (PEI, ME, NJ,
etc.) or in logs submitted by me and other eastern DXers such as Conti, Naud,
Willie, etc.?

<<
I just completed a quickie Caribbean cruise (Ft. L., St. Thomas, Martinique,
Grenada, Bonaire, Cura?ao) and at night in St. Thomas, noted a Radio Maria on
1240. It was pretty weak there but got progressively stronger as we headed
southward. I Googled it and found a Radio Maria on 1240 in the Dominican
Republic; it is not in WRTVH. I vaguely recall from 5-10 years ago a 100+kw
station on 1240 planned for somewhere in Brazil but don?t recall ever seeing
anything like this reported.

Any ideas on what this might be?

[IRCA] Radio Clubs Convention

2017-06-24 Thread Mike Sanburn
We are less that 2 months out from the convention in Reno Nevada. Still time to
make plans to join us there. You might be able to negotiate an even better room
rate with the hotel than the discount they offered us. Auto Club, USAA, Best
Western Rewards can all be utilized. I'm looking forward to the event. 73

shipping. Has transmit module too, handling up to 400 Watts SSB, per the
manufacturer. Listen or transmit!!

It’s been my experience over the years, writing andbroadcasting about radio on
stamps, that many radio amateurs and SW / MW /FM enthusiasts also have
philatelic interests.  My radio stamps collection started in 1980 after
Ichanced upon Radio Sweden while exploring the shortwave bands with my
newFRG-7.  Part of the program that evening was about radio stations thatwere
featured on postage stamps.  Over the next 36 years my collectionexpanded to
cover 32 radio topics on stamps. Precursors- Patron Saint - Inventors and
Pioneers - Magnetic Field and Ionosphere - TimeZones - Radio Telegraphy - Morse

Re: [IRCA] Radio Coro Venezuela 780 in very clear

2015-12-24 Thread Rick Dau
Bob, your receptions of Radio Coro spurred me on to try for it, but instead,
I'm getting Spanish in the null of WBBM that is not matching up with the
streams of either Radio Coro OR XHWGR 101.1 (which XEWGR in Monclova
simulcasts). I'm hearing primarily music, including a Spanish version of
"Winter Wonderland" a little bit ago. I strongly suspect XEFST, but can't find
a stream anywhere to confirm it. :(

[IRCA] radio broadcasting in Britain

2015-11-24 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
In a recent MW News, the following article was referenced, concerning listening
to various radio media in Britain:

https://media.info/radio/news/uk-radio-listening-up-new-low-for-am-fm-in-worlds-most-multiplatform-market

Interesting that it is taking so long for digital versions of radio to catch
on, even in so concentrated a market, and with more coercive governments
perhaps. Also, that streaming isn't growing by leaps and bounds.

Do the local experts here know of any equivalent evaluation of the American
market, or Europe and Asia for that matter? Last I heard, digital radio had
pretty much died in Canada.

best wishes,

Nick

Re: [IRCA] Radio Locator

2015-10-13 Thread John Stephens
Todd:

Don't know if you've received the answer you need yet, but - good news - the
solution is simple.

The navigation schema changed somewhat on Radio Locator, so to view day/night
patterns, simply type in the call letter of the station you are inquiring about
on the main RL search page. When you get the page of station info, instead of
clicking on the link for the station's call letters, click on the yellow &
black "information" symbol just to the left of the callsign. This will take
you to the page containing technical data for the station - including day and
night coverage patterns.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Oh, I forgot to add, Radio Kiribati only broadcasts local programming at
certain times of day. Sometimes I'll hear Radio new Zealand International
outside of local broadcasting, other times I won't

TX times are as follows.. most of their programming is in their native
language, which is gilbertese according to wikipedia. It's a Micronesian
language of the Austronesian language family. The do three segments of
english broadcasting every day, some 30 minutes long and one is an hour
long.

Kiribati is UTC+14... at 416pm Thursday in Southwest Arkansas, where i am..
it's 916am Friday morning in Kiribati.

Morning: 0700am to 0830am. English at 8am

Well, I just found out something to those of us interested in Pacific radio
signals. Radio Kiribati 1440 JUST started a live webstream.. JUST.. as in,
like within the last few days!

The audio levels can be a bit loud and overdriven at times, but i am
corresponding with their Chief Engineer and the Radio station manager at
the Broadcasting & Publications Authority in an effort to get levels set
just right.

The audio is average and I wouldn't expect much more, quality wise, then
what they've got now.. as most of these stations have hare basics when it
comes to some equipment.

The Radio Kiribati stream was just added to the Reciva.com database for
internet radios and should be there soon if it isn't already.

The stream is at http://202.6.120.13:8000/ The stream itself is of amazing
quality at 64k vorbis, which sounds good to my ears via my CC Wifi Radio

I've just been notified the 2 CD recordings I ordered and paid for have
been made and will be mailed out Wednesday from Kiribati. I should have
them in about 10 days or so.

I can't wait to get them as their daily 1 hour english broadcast is always
a treat to listen to with some good classic country tunes being the music
genre of choice played on the air.

I will share the audio online when i've had a chance to download it form CD
to my computer and listen to it.

[IRCA] Radio Kiribati AM1440

2015-09-14 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Another addition to my aircheck collection is on the way.. I've ordered 2
CD's from Radio Kiribati AM1440. I have 3 or 4 from them previous and once
or twice a year, I'll email them and order more.

For $10AUD I get a CD mailed to me, postage included.. and the CD is a
studio quality recording of their daily 1 hour english show, usually
recorded within a week of my email.

Country, especially classic country.. is big over there.

Would I pay for other airchecks under most circumstances? Absolutely not,
but for a station that probably has no budget to just giveaway something
like this and is so rarely heard outside it's "local" broadcast area, this
is very worth it to me.

When I want another recording, all I do is email them, tell them how many
different shows I want and notify them I'm sending the money via Western
Union.. then once it's sent I alert them, they let me know it's been picked
up and when my CD will be recorded.

This method is the quickest, as money is available in minutes.. not the 2
weeks mail would take.. and I've never been cheated or not gotten what I
asked for.

I even have a Broadcasting & Publications Authority of Kiribati polo shirt
around somewhere that I bought about 2 years ago for $20.

When i get this latest aircheck I will make a post with links to all my
airchecks so others can download them.

Some stories [the latest being FM in Cambodia and Kenya], many hundreds
of rare photos and images, and an ever expanding range of helpful radio
guides [the latest is Hawaii USA] make the website a special place for
all kinds of people: radio hobbyists, nostalgia buffs, historians,
family history researchers, tourists, and thousands of ordinary people
worldwide looking for something interesting to read or learn related to
radio history and heritage...and today's radio.

So far in 2015, visitors to the website come from such places as
Australia, India, Indonesia, Brazil, China, Iran and over 100 other
countries across the Pacific, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North, South
and Central Americaall finding something of interest. The top 25
cities they live in include New York, Los Angeles, New Delhi, Mumbai,
Dhaka and London.

Thank you for supporting this free community project of the non-profit
Radio Heritage Foundation. The real project work is behind the scenes,
and we're only scratching the surface.but we're sure you'll
find our website fascinating, entertaining, educational and, of course,
fun!

We're completely community funded and we'd love to have you join us this
month. From $25 for regular supporters, that's just 48c a week over a

[IRCA] Radio items for sale

2015-06-15 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I thought I had the Tecsun PL310ET previously posted sold, but nothing came
of the offer.

The Tecsun PL310ET is brand new, I've had it about a month. I bought it as
I was having reception problems at home and needed to determine if it was
my main radio, the antenna or something in the area. (It turned out to be
RF/Electrical problem).

You get just the radio, no power cord. (I didn't even get one when I bought
it). It tunes 153 to 513khz, 522 to 1610khz, 2300 to 21950khz and 64 to
108 khz. It has bandwith settings for AM, Stereo Mono for FM and it will
give you signal strength and even tells you what the temperature is!

It's a nice pocket radio. I'll sell it for $35 including shipping and
tracking. (I paid $45!)

I've also got a Select-A-Tenna, $40 including shipping and tracking

I've also got a Grundig AN200 tuneable AM loop antenna. It comes with one
cord that plugs into the loop at one end and has bare wires at the other.
I'll throw in a cable that has plugs on both ends. $30 including shipping
and tracking.

Buy all 3 from me today before 1pm pacific time/4pm eastern and you can
have it all for $100 shipping and tracking included! (I'm moving in a few
days and headed to the post office this afternoon and just wanna get rid of
this stuff!)

Email me privately, walkerbroadcast...@gmail.com payment accepted via
paypal or the gofundme.com website.

[IRCA] Radio Memories in danger

2015-04-01 Thread Radio Heritage Foundation

March 31 2015

Keep us out of danger this week
___

Hello...do you have a favorite radio memory? Did you know that as each
year goes past, more memorabilia is lost and destroyed, and memories
grow weaker?

Here at the Radio Heritage Foundation we've made it our mission for 10
years now to keep radio memories safe.

It's a big project, and we've scored some successes. Over 350 stories
now feature on our website www.radioheritage.net along with radio
station guides to popular listening countries Australia, New Zealand and
Hawaii as well as countless facts and figures to keep people occupied
for hoursand that's just at our website and barely scratches
the surface.

You see, the real work is what you can't see. Saving, finding, and
collecting genuine radio memorabilia...thousands of letters, cards, car
stickers, photos, hours of audio and video...storing them, and a handful
of volunteers slowly sorting them out so we can share them with everyone
worldwide for free.

We've started our 10th year with a new web server to host our website,
and our emails, introduced a new email management system, and started
moving our website content to a new system so that our site will look
much fresher and easier to find content, and started testing our our new
database system which will ultimately save and present many thousands of
items of memorabilia.

But the project is in danger this week. On April 1 we begin a new
financial year, but it looks like we'll be a long way behind in paying
our office bills for storage and other operational costs. In fact,
$4,500 or so behind.

Loyal supporters have found 78% of the budget this last financial year,
but it's not enough. We began the year about $4,500 down also, so we've
been on the back foot all year long.

You know, we get no government funding or grants from the radio
industry. It's just ordinary folks who gift some dollars here and there
as they can afford to because they like what we do and want to help keep
the memories alive. We name them all on our Roll of Honor, have a look
at it on www.radioheritage.net and you'll see that we touch people all
over the world.

If you can help us with a gift towards our project, you'll help us
reduce that $4,500 shortfall...and most importantly, do something
practical to keep radio memories safe.

On behalf of the Radio Heritage Foundation volunteers, supporters and
radio memories, thank you for keeping us out of danger this week. You
can make a gift today at www.radioheritage.net and we will acknowledge
you with our heartfelt thanks.

Email us to unsubscribe from our mailing list and please allow 5 working
days. We'll be sad, however, to see you go.

PS...See our latest stories from Denmark and South Africa, use our just
updated PAL Pacific Asian Listeners Radio Guide, use our Australian, New
Zealand and Hawaiian radio guides and enjoy the radio memories we
continue to share for 10 years at www.radioheritage.net... and please
keep us out of danger this week with a gift towards our $4,500 shortfall
in funding the projectwe want to add you to our Roll of Honor!

[IRCA] Radio Shack's new name, should it be Crooks R Us?

2015-03-16 Thread George Sherman via IRCA
--- Begin Message ---
I bought a MW/FM/SW radio that I thought would fit in a pocket, but did'nt. Was
most mad that it doesn't have NOAA WX like it said on radioshack.com/ partial
description. Also the MW is very weak, but some stations are heard while
holding it, but go away when set on table. Also, some MW stations are only
heard when FM/SW antenna is extended. FM is fair, got KWWK 96.5 Rochester, MN,
adjacent to 96.3 KTWN. SW pulls in some easy ones like Cuba &  sometimes
Australia on 9580. Audio quality is bad.

The construction quality seems very poor, like you might need the 90 day
warranty (?) if there is any way they would do something.
As for the continuing 1,400-2,400 stores they say if you want to return
something, best to do it same day (no advance notice of a store closing?).
Radioshack.com will continue, but will returns be honored? Seems uncertain.
Keep buying from us, we care about our customers less than ever might be the
most honest slogan for their company. 73, George S., MN

[IRCA] Radio for Sale

2015-02-09 Thread Chris Dorn

Hello all,

I have a Lowe HF-150 that I would like to pass on to someone else to
enjoy. This would be ideal for those who like to go portable. It does
show some signs of use and wear, but not too bad. It comes with the AC
adapter and external keypad. I'm asking $275USD, including shipping
costs from Canada to USA.

Re: [IRCA] Radio shack to file for bankruptcy

2015-01-16 Thread Theo
Um, I defer to the likes of Nick Hall-Patch and Colin Newell as to the
hobby usefulness of Radio Shack in Canada of years gone by... but RS
went belly up in the True North ages ago.

It re-appeared as 'The Source at Circuit City' (I think I have the
correct preposition), then later re-organised simply as 'The Source'.

I dunno how the stock/availability from The Source in Canada compares to
current American RS outlets, but given the changes in 'our' technical
needs, and our individual knowledge bases, the chain seems to be doing
pretty well. There are two outlets for example in my local mega-mall,
Metrotown, in Burnaby, BC.

Does that suggest RS in the US needs to consolidate or re-invent its
focus to satisfy present-day demand, and that our DX requirements are
simply too minimal to support a retailer?

Theo

(Sent a day after the fiasco of Target in Canada imploded; now there's a
story of retail incompetence in a foreign market.)

The Shack provided some of my best portable DX machines from 1961
right into the Eighties.

Most were in the popular "TRF" series.

In August 1966, at a summer cottage rental at West Dennis Beach, MA, I
had one of my first big hauls of transatlantic MW stations. This was
with a 12R614K Realistic TRF model, a predecessor to the more famous
12-655 of the Seventies.

Some TRF's I was able to modify with regeneration to boost selectivity
and sensitivity.

With Radio Shack stores likely to close, experimenters and hobbyists
will be looking for "fire sale" clearance offers.

When the stores are gone, we will be mostly shopping in an online
world with C. Crane, Universal Radio, Fry's, HRO, AES, and Amazon
covering much of the equipment end.

Parts can be bought from the likes of Mouser, Digi-Key,
Newark/Farnell, Jameco, and Allied. Here in MA we still have the "You
Do It" electronics store in Needham.

Much of the rest or Radio Shack's stuff (e.g. cables, small hand
tools) may be found at Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's, auto parts stores,
etc.

More than once, the Radio Shack store here in South Yarmouth bailed
out beach DXpeditions and antenna raising sessions with emergency
parts and gear - even if just a humble bag of clip leads. The value
of that store goes back to 1974 when my parents had moved to the town
from Arlington, MA. This quick access to needed items won't be as
easy in the future I suppose.

Short story is that this chain lost its focus and could not compete
with big box stores in electronic commodity items (phones, TV's, PC's,
stereo, etc.) or with the hard-core parts stores such as Mouser for
hams, makers, d-i-y folks, computer / robotics geeks, and other
hobbyists. They retained way too many brick-and-mortar outlets 20 or
more years after online shopping had become a regular activity for
most potential customers.

No matter how you look at this, it's THE END OF AN ERA.

Anyone with at least half a grasp of what their situation has been
like in recent years (i.e., dire) could see this was coming, so it's
not too surprising at all. Â Fortunately, there are still places like
Universal Radio in Ohio and Ken's Electronics in Kalamazoo, Mich. that
sell the receivers and parts that we in the DXing hobby need and seek
out the most.Â

gear - even if just a humble bag of clip leads. The value of that
store goes back to 1974 when my parents had moved to the town from
Arlington, MA. This quick access to needed items won't be as easy in
the future I suppose.

Short story is that this chain lost its focus and could not compete
with big box stores in electronic commodity items (phones, TV's, PC's,
stereo, etc.) or with the hard-core parts stores such as Mouser for
hams, makers, d-i-y folks, computer / robotics geeks, and other
hobbyists. They retained way too many brick-and-mortar outlets 20 or
more years after online shopping had become a regular activity for most
potential customers.

No matter how you look at this, it's THE END OF AN ERA.

Anyone with at least half a grasp of what their situation has been like
in recent years (i.e., dire) could see this was coming, so it's not too
surprising at all.  Fortunately, there are still places like Universal
Radio in Ohio and Ken's Electronics in Kalamazoo, Mich. that sell the
receivers and parts that we in the DXing hobby need and seek out the
most.

Where I was going was more or less the same place. But if you're a gamer or
a hacker or whatever, sure you learn yourself, but there isn't a whole lot
you need to buy that RS has. There isn't a lot to buy period. What we were
mostly into involved a lot of hardware of various kinds. What most of the
younger folks today are doing is still loosely electronics in that it's
with computers, but they aren't going to RS. Technical creativity as you
put it is appropriate. It's just a whole different ballgame now.

Re: [IRCA] Radio shack to file for bankruptcy

2015-01-16 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
An OT philosophical discussion.I'd be curious about the figures
for electronic DIYers, Russ. Does one exclude those who fiddle with
microcontrollers (see magazines like Circuit Cellar or Elektor),
monkey with Linux, hack the Pentagon? It's not particularly DX or
even hardware oriented, of course, but DIY I think it is. It may be
a smaller percentage of the population than 50 years ago, but I
wonder. I've run into younger people who work as game developers,
and I don't think they started by taking professional training as
game developers, they DIYedit's just that they didn't need a
drill and a soldering iron to do it.

Of course, our work world relies far less on hand oriented tech
skills than it once did also. Yet, there are these "maker spaces"
that allow the DIYer access to tools that a small home workshop might
not have, something I might have appreciated in own younger
days. (who knows what goes on in China? The fact that Tecsun put
out a kit that is essentially one of their DSP ultralights on a board
makes me wonder, as the market in America can't have been great)

Even in the good ol' days, far more DIYers modified their cars than
played with radios from what I can recall, so we've always been a
minority. But the day I heard somebody's phone cheep out "SMS" in
Morse code was the day I realized that maybe at least the ham techies
had taken over the world in a small way, hi. (how often do we see
the schematic symbol for an antenna in a public environment, speaking
of phones? That was pretty arcane stuff, something you'd see on the
cover of the ARRL Handbook, when I was first making smoke with
electronic components.)

Having spouted all that, I suspect there are fewer hot iron
typesbut the spirit that drove those types now drives different
forms of technical creativity.

best wishes,

Nick

2015-01-15 Thread Martin Foltz
I stopped by one of our local RS stores last week to see about replacing a
screen on an iPhone6. They said give them a month or two. So they are (or
were) keeping up with repairs on the new phones. Not many customers and I
didn't really spend much time in there. RS obviously needs a new business
model. Cell phone plans is too competitive but there is a need for cell
phone repair. Lots of little shops around but RS could draw in more
customers with their name and if they were able to do repairs while the
customer waited. They should have jumped into all the game machines for TV
and the games. Actually anything that you can attach to your TV.

Here in Orange County we have a couple electronics stores for components but
we've lost a couple over the years. Fry's has some components and then we
have MARVAC. There is also a Ham Radio Outlet in the area.

I've seen nothing anywhere on the web about opening new stores. But I have
seen a lot about both 2014 and 2015 closings.

What I see is many fewer customers than 'back in the day', and most of
those are absolutely helpless cell phone customers.

Re: [IRCA] Radio shack to file for bankruptcy

2015-01-15 Thread James Renfrew
I walked into RS in downtown Washington DC shortly after this post an
casually asked about bankruptcy. I'd say I got coached response but it
had two parts: (1) this is old news from a year ago (2) if it's so dire why
is RS opening up 500 new stores? She seemed to be indicating more boutique
operations in the future. Jim Renfrew, Clarendon NY

Re: [IRCA] Radio shack to file for bankruptcy

2015-01-15 Thread Russ Johnson
Here is my favorite Radio Shack story.

Probably 15 years ago, I wanted to buy a DX-398. We actually had two Radio
Shacks in our small town. During this era, they were pushing the extended
warranties on everything...and I mean hard.

I had my daughter with me at the time. I said, "Watch this."

I went into the store and went right to the sales guy. I said, "I am here
to buy a DX-398 shortwave radio. But I am going to buy it under one
condition. If at any point in this transaction, you so much as mention
anything about an extended warranty, I am out of here and will get the
radio across town. Understood?" He indicated he did.

I went to the shelf. Pulled the radio down and took it to the register.
As he is ringing it up, he says, "Are you sure you are not interested in
the extended warranty?"

"Oh, that's too bad," I said. Off we went across town.

For me they outlived their usefulness about 10 years ago when they decided
to be a cell phone store.

"Radio Shack. You got questionswe have confused looks on our faces."

I bought a lot of their 5K pots for termination too. I should probably pick up
a few more to keep them in reserve. Since the RS stores are locally owned, I
guess they do have the option to get their product from other vendors don't

Yes, the Radio Shack item of the past lasted. The old TRF's are still around.
But the products today are not nearly as good and are over priced, at least

Re: [IRCA] Radio shack to file for bankruptcy

2015-01-15 Thread Patrick Martin
The Radio Shack today is not the Radio Shack of the past. I used to buy a lot
of parts there, but the quality of parts is poor today, if they even have it.
Locally we have 2 Radio Shacks. We used to have three, but the one in Astoria
went out of business a few years ago. That leaves Warrenton & Seaside. Both are
owned by different people and unless I call, I never know if they carry an item
or not. Add to that their prices are no longer competitive like they once were.
For example, I used to buy their ground rods for $2.99 each. I know they are
not much, copper clad that the copper would wear off, but still useable. The
last time I checked, the rods were $10 or $12 each. I have no idea what they
are today. I can buy better stuff at Home Depot for less. I am sorry to hear
this, but not surprised.

My 40+ years experience with them hasn't indicated that their quality is that
great and honestly I my overall experience has been that quality is somewhat
below average for what I've paid for it in comparison to similar priced
products from other vendors.

OK the TRF 12-665 was great for its time, but all three of mine crapped out and
two rather quickly. I went thru 4 of their cassette recorders for DXpeds etc
before promising to NEVER buy another. I've had several each of their RG58 and
RG59 cables crap out, almost always due to connector issues.

At least their resistors work to terminate my DKAZ antennas.

Yes, I also view their management as being poor and badly focused over the past
couple of decades as they could have done a better job with changes in the
industry and public desires and needs.

I believe the number of amateur radio operators who are licensed has actually
increased. Ironically Radio Shack stopped selling ham equipment a while back. I
don't think they ever resumed with it but I haven't been in there for a while.
A lot of their Realistic branded items were of pretty good quality. What I
wouldn't give if they still sold the TRF am/fm portable. Who remembers the free
battery cards? Ms

I doubt that their old paradigm is workable today. Just as the number of
radio hobbyists - hams, DX'ers, SWL's - is shrinking,
so is the pool of electronics DIY'ers. A lot of the DIY market implosion
results from advanced circuitry moving beyond more and
more people who lack the type of technical knowledge to continue.

I'd more expect the inventory to be liquidated, period.

On that basis, I'll plan to soon be stocking up on spares of almost
anything that I might need that I can't reasonably find anywhere
else and consider it a worthwhile investment.

I bought a Realistic DX-66 in the mid-1980s. It's been my mom's kitchen radio
since the early '90s and is still going strong. No scratchy pots. No slop in

That's not surprising. Radio Shack is a text book case of poor management
from the top down dating from the early 1980s. They could have been the
premier personal computer manufacturer circa 1981 or so but decided the
route to go was with all proprietary hardware which was a fiasco. IBM did
the same thing with the PS2 line and never again had much of a market share
in the desktop PC realm. Enter Dell.

Like a lot of folks, I have a lot of 25 year old and even older Radio Shack
products that are still working fine. My 25 year old Radio Shack DVM has
hit the concrete floor of my shack more times than I can count and still
works. The LCD in my much more expensive Fluke broke the first time it
dropped.

It's sad to see how badly Radio Shack has slipped due to their own
mismanagement. I hope someone can keep them operating.

[IRCA] Radio shack to file for bankruptcy

2015-01-15 Thread R. Colin Newell
http://www.wsj.com/articles/radioshack-prepares-bankruptcy-filing-1421279360

We have depended on them for years of easy access to DIY parts, kits and,
yes, a bit of technical expertise.

I still have my DX150B sitting on a lab bench running 24/7 -- as it has
since the
day I bought it on November the 3rd, 1973!

RS slowly drifted away from their die hard DIY electronics experimenter
types
over the years to cater to the latest fad -- and now they are adrift in
irrelevance.

I will be sad to see them go -- but times have changed.

Re: [IRCA] Radio Shack catalog archives

2015-01-12 Thread R. Colin Newell
In Canada, our Radio Shack (Now called the Source) is little more than a
mini-Best Buy with nary an electronic component in site...
cell phones, portable players, some computer accessories, games and some RC
stuff.

My DX150B - which I purchased on November 3rd 1973 still sits in my office
at the local University and works as good as the day I bought it.

They were recorded in the studio by the station, at a cost to me of $10AUD
for each one. Very worth it, if you ask me.

[IRCA] Radio Shack 12-639

2014-10-26 Thread Martin Foltz
I found one of these AM-FM portables at the Goodwill. I didn't need it but
couldn't just leave it there. Only problem is the back battery/line cord
cover is missing. I plugged it in and it plays. When I have time I'll see
how well it pulls in stations.

Anyone with a donor radio I would love to find a cover.

Re: [IRCA] Radio Disney

2014-10-05 Thread Lawrence Stoler
I totally agree with your analysis of why Disney is getting out, how they
paid too much for the stations and in the end, many of them will become
brokered facilities.

They paid $40 million for WQEW. It was an LMA which lasted for eight years.
They won't get that today.

I think Disney wants to get out of the network business. Networks are a
headache. Programming KDIS alone will be far easier and much less expensive
than a network.

It paid way too much for some of the stations. A lot of money was spent on
broadbanding to make HD easier to configure and maintain. The high power
facilities are expensive to maintain. Not having to pay for HD licenses each
year will save a lot of money.

I think Spanish, religious (especially Catholic) and other ethnic group
owners will be interested in the stations. They have money to spend. Cumulus
and iHeart Media are both heavily leveraged and losing a lot of money.
Several Catholic groups are aggressively buying stations. Disney would
probably accept reasonable offers.
