Re: [IRCA] SDRs and Windows (was Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 11-30)

2016-12-01 Thread Chuck Hutton
I believe there's no Win10 / Perseus ptoblem but rather only that Win10 doesn't
normally permit unsigned drivers, even if the unsigned drivers were inherited
from a previous version of Windows.

This can be cured by getting the signed drivers from Microtelecom's web site.
And I think the old method of manually forcing an unsigned driver to be loaded
still works.

I know of no Win10 problems (and have none myself on 5 machines) after
installing the signed drivers.

It's not the Mac part, it's the Win 10 part. I gather, from this list, that
Win 10 is not 'friendly' to Perseus software ... or many other things.

I have no experience using it, but SdrDx runs as a native Mac application
and supports the RFSpace & Afedri SDRs (and maybe others?):
http://fyngyrz.com/?p=915

FYI, my daily driver for my Perseus is still my trusty MSI Wind U100
netbook as recommended by Guy Atkins many moons ago. It just refuses to
die and I've had no reason to replace or upgrade it. And I have no issues
running Perseus V5 on my Win 10 machine.

Dunno about Parallels "many years ago," but there are no USB port fast

Hi Saul,

I have a circa 2013 15-inch MacBook Pro and have been using it with the
ELAD FDM-S2 SDR receiver running the ELAD Windows application (FDM-SW2)
using Parallels Desktop with Windows 10 on my Mac. The system has run
flawlessly since I put it together in June. Nice thing about Parallels
is that you run the Mac OS and Windows simultaneously and can switch
between OS's instantly.

Paul's situation seems like a slam-dunk case for SDR usage.

Go out five to ten minutes before top-of-hour, record the whole band
xx58-xx03, and then you're back inside where it's warm by five past
the hour.

Total time outside 10-15 minutes.

Whole dial worth of stuff to tune after-the-fact will keep you busy
INDOORS for several hours unless conditions are completely "naff."

Unless you want to drag an extra battery pack along, you want a
receiver that powers up right off the host laptop's USB.

The tent is still a good idea to moderate wind / temperature /
precipitation effects on gear and operator.

As I've said before I can't run coax from my DX spot to the house. It
would cross tiger freeway and pick up a bunch of RF and electrical noise
from the building.

I am going to eventually look into a heated tent of some kind
