Re: [IRCA] South Pacific DXing for 17Nov09
Walt, Outside chance your 1050 ESPN could be KTCT-San Mateo. They are owned by KNBR-680 owners and often give KNBR call letters on 1050 they do carry ESPN from time to time. Don K. After cool and drizzly weather the night before as we left New Zealand, last night was very comfortable and dry. Unfortunately, there appeared to be more static. Mostly dominated by Radio Disney (which should be KMIK, Tempe AZ with 50 kW) at good level at 07:38. Later faded to be replaced with a SS station at good level with phone # mentioned at 08:04. Good level early in the evening. 1150: Interesting station as they had a call-in show with a toll-free number at 07:55. At that moment, the announcer said: “You’re NOT the rest of the world”, and then silence. The signal disappeared. Sure like to know who they were. They probably don't want someone to hear SS coming in from Mexico and think 1050 went back to Spanish again (which it was for many years before KTCT took over). As far as spending goes, remember that they spend boatloads of money for IBOC to increase the fidelity of talk stations. Nothing like hearing their hosts gas pains on the morning show. Yes...I'm cynical and sarcastic. I could hear around 08:16 2 men with conversation of a religious nature. Could this be Petersburg, AK, or KJAL, Tafuna? Help needed here! The last I heard, KJAL was off the air and its tower was in rather poor shape. That was just before the Tsunami struck. But please check further on this freq if you get near Samoa - the station may have risen from the dead. On the other hand, the tower might be now at the bottom of the bay. While you're at it, try checking for American Samoans on 630 648 720 and 900 to see if any of them are on the air at the moment. Walt, Thanks for your two reports. Very interesting. Comments: 1580: Probably the most fascinating frequency of the evening. Again Radio Disney ID at 08:58. Best heard aiming pretty much N/S. Not sure how to explain that! KBLA (then KDAY) was among the first West Coast stations to pop in when I was out in the Pacific 1020: Spanish station at fair to good level at 08:07 with 2 men talking, mentioning “economica”. More than likely KTNQ 1050: This one is interesting. An ESPN station (ESPN Radio ID at 09:30). At 09:28 I thought I heard “KAIR” ID, but doesn’t match the frequency. Any ideas here? Thanks! KTCT calls itself KNBR (as I recall). However, it is Fox Sports (KNBR-680 is ESPN). 1070 - you didn't list KNX but we heard it very well on the North Island. We were on our honeymoon in November '78 and tuned in to find out that Jerry Brown won the CA governorship. (I understand he is running again!)
