a return, at last, to a small semblance of TPs. High point today was Taiwan on
1557 complete with an ID. There was also a small Aussie opening around 1540UT

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

594 JOAK 1547UT

612 4QR ABC news app announcement 1541UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

774 JOUB music box s/off 1532UT

828 JOBB English lessons 1501UT, but strength deteriorated from then on

1557 RTI Taiwan, nice lady read an ID right out of the pages of WRTH: "
...chungyang guangpo dientai, Taiwan chih yin" 1613UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

594 3WV //612 over JOAK 1537UT

1566 HLAZ woman in Russian 1651UT, then fading up and down until 1700UT, when
perfectly serviceable "welcome to the Voice of America" and a VoA jingle were
heard

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

576 music and talk, only on west Flag 1535UT 2RN?

585 pop music, west Flag only, not //576 or 594 1534UT; 2WEB?

693 JOAB music box s/off 1531UT

702 2BL //612 and leading somewhat 1537UT

738 2NR lagging 612 a bit 1539UT

774 3LO //612 1537UT

873 JOGB s/off anthem 1530UT

891 5AN ABC fanfare 1530UT

972 woman talking Korean intonation? 1622UT

1017 man talking, island intonation? 1533UT

1287 man talking, Japanese intonation 1602UT

1323 light music 1536UT CRI?

1575 man talking, SE Asian language? 1537UT, better on north Flag

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)
747 891  918 945 1188 1242 1332 1593  seemed to be Asian;
 567 846 855 936 1098 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

A fallback in conditions this morning

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1566 HLAZ peaked at 1602UT with woman in Chinese, but was also at
pretty good strength later with Russian talk at 1632, 1637 and 1642UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

639 CNR1 man in Chinese, slightly offset from //6125, 1526UT
774 JOUB woman mentioning NHK 1539UT
972 HLCA man in Korean 1537UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

594 JOAK man and woman in Japanese 1523UT
693 JOAB man in Japanese //774, then male ballad 1521UT
738 3 and 1 pips heard faintly on hour; by 1502UT at reasonable
level with woman in Chinese; Taiwan?

747 JOIB man in Japanese //774 1505UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

837 man talking, not parallel 594, and had a Chinese intonation
873 JOGB man and woman talking //828 1527UT
1134 laid back music 1543UT
1143 woman talking, Chinese intonation 1612UT
1593 CNR1 woman singing //6125, 1602UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

  711 864 891 918 936 945 1089  1188  1206   1458  1512 seemed to be Asian;
 1017 seemed to be DU

The bulk of anything interesting was between 1540 and 1605UT, and it
wasn't that exciting. All Asian except for one DU carrier long
before local sunrise

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

not today

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

not here either

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

or here

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

(all Asia)
1242 man mumbling 1543UT, woman at 1551UT might have been Japanese,
but much too weak to say
1422 woman mumbing rapidly 1544UT, possibly Japanese??, into ballad
1546UT, and mostly gone a couple of minutes later
1566 first noted 1551UT with woman singing 1551UT, woman talking,
Chinese inflection 1553UT, also at 1600UT, than a man talking. Hung
in for about 15 minutes getting gradually weaker

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

612 earlier and likely DU; 972 and 1134 seemed to be Asian

best wishes,

Nick

I was working in another city this morning, but the NetSDR stayed
home and recorded to little avail

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,

no

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1575 VoA likely, woman in SE Asian language, another woman on phone,
1545UT, erratically fading up and down for several more minutes

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or

the above passing through

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in

774 JOUB pips 1200UT, into what sounded like English lessons; this
hung around with at best mostly very poor audio for a couple of
hours, then gone for good
1566 HLAZ likely, woman talking, maybe Chinese, erratic fading in and
out for several more minutes

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

Things are looking up. Not only was there barely detectable audio
(twice!) from suspected Tahiti-738, there was occasionally a pretty
fair carrier on 828.

Not sure that any heart medication will be up to quite that level of
excitement.

best wishes,

Nick

2014-01-13 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Definitely more action at sunrise today, and less earlier. Peaking
maybe 1530-1540UT, particularly on the lower band.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1566 HLAZ man in CC 1525, 1539UT top signal, but plenty of other
readable periods after 1500UT. Considerably better than during
earlier JJ broadcast

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

972 HLCA man in KK 1532UT, still there 1551UT, and barely readable
1606UT when I shut down
1593 CNR1 another one with lots of signal after 1500UT, peaking w/man
in CC //6175 1527UT, but continuing to after 1600UT at lower level

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

603 HLSA? Da Doo Ron Ron a little upbeat for this one, at 1538UT,
but don't think it was the Chinese, which may have been arguing with
this earlier, man talking, mixing with more sedate vocal mx. Best on west Flag
774 JOUB man in JJ 1449UT, brief fade up. Weaker signal at 1533UT,
sounded like woman w/EE lessons
1314 JOUF man in JJ, briefly at this strength at 1529UT, but talk and
mx was there for about another 10 minutes at lower levels
1575 VoA assumed w/orental sounding female vocals 1529UT. Couldn't
keep up with 1566 and 1593 this morning.

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

594 JOAK/ man talking JJ inflection 1534UT, mixing w/ someone else w/ vocal mx?

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

648 738 1143 1269 1359 1377 1422 1467 1539(SAH)
