This morning might take the title for the season's worst...

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

not by any means

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

the above passing through

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

not in the slightest

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

594 JOAK NHK interlude music recognizable in the gloom 1510UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

 567 1566 seemed to be Asian;
891 1017 seemed to be DU

Re: [IRCA] TP 27 Jan Victoria version

2018-01-27 Thread R. Colin Newell
I tuned in at around 1430 and the NHP fish barrel looked pretty lively — but my
80-10M end fed simply did not measure up.

Nicks SDR looked good on 594, 774, 828, 891, 972, ... through to 1566 (which
was the best signal on the band...)

I got threshold audio on 774, 828, 972, 1053 and 1566... a good 10-15 dB below
whatever Nick was getting.

Getting a FLAG or Wellbrook ALA back in the air is imperative.

The higher indices had an effect, but didn't wipe things out

Not yesterday's DX session by any means. A couple of audios before
1400UT, then nothing much until sunrise enhancement, and then
everything, such as it was, was above 1550kHz.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1566 HLAZ woman in Japanese and pop sounding music, 1327UT.

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1566 HLAZ pop music 1545UT, and as it faded somewhat by 1552UT,
there was a man talking, trading places with it, Chinese inflection,
so the jammer was making it also it seems

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

738 Tahiti? pop music 1349UT
1557 Taiwan assumed, quiet vocal music peaking 1545UT, man talking as
it faded, sounding Chinese
1593 CNR1 woman and man talking, //6030 1548UT, with 6030 not as
good, and other parallels MIA. Not good news when shortwave is worse
than medium wave. Best on north Flag in spite of worse splash from 1600kHz

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

1287 woman talking Japanese inflection, 1349UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

the above passing through, not much action today.

best wishes,

Nick

At several checks after 1400UT this morning, things were fairly
abysmal. Then, a quick (10 minutes?) sunrise boost started around
1530UT,bringing several upper band stations to at least some audio
traces. But the bottom dropped out at 1540UT; one minute I was
listening to the first bars of the Japanese anthem on 1602, the next,
even 1566 had gone.

cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

1278 man talking, maybe CC cadence??? and no 1287 didn't appear at
all this morning
1602 NHK2 light mx, then man talking 1537UT; first bars of JJ anthem
at 1540, then the bottom dropped out

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

1242 1296 1323 1404 (quite strong, but still no audio) 1503
