In some ways worse (the lower band was almost completely dead), in some ways
better (there was a lift at the upper end of the band around local sunrise)

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

no

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

1566 HLAZ woman in Chinese followed by female vocal music 1542UT. This first
showed about 1530UT, and lasted until after 1600UT, but not at this good a level

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

1593 CNR1 woman talking //6175 1539UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

972 woman talking, maybe Korean? 1527UT

1557 man talking, Chinese intonation at 1540 and 1545UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

1242 1359 1422 1503 1575 seemed to be Asian;
 1017 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick

Lots of splash, lots of carriers, a number of those with whispers of
audio. There were lots of rapid fades, so likely missed some
peaks. NHK2 off at 1500UT again, though a number of carriers left
on. Several Japanese commercial stations made an appearance, with
1422 leading the pack, but struggling with the aforementioned splash
just the same.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

972 HLCA woman in Korean fading up rapidly after weak pips on the
hour. Similar strength with woman and man in Korean 1552UT
1566 HLAZ peaking at various times between 1545 and 1610UT, Chinese
talk, quite a number of ballads with both male and female voices

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 JOAK man talking to woman on phone, 1514UT
774 JOUB man in Portuguese 1452UT
1422 JORF assumed woman in Japanese 1528UT, better on north Flag, but
still lots of 1420 splash; this was quite strong for much of the
morning, not a usual visitor
1593 CNR1 man in Chinese 1526UT; ID'd slightly later after fading
somewhat man in Chinese //6125 1534UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

693 JOAB music box s/off 1502UT; heard "ni hoso desu" at 1500UT but
CBU splash obliterated the call ID if there was one

828 JOBB music //774 1457UT
873 JOGB garbled call ID by man JO..B, then NHK mention 1500UT
1242 JOLF rock music 1453UT, cuckoo pips noted 1500UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

558 HLQH as 603, only poking above the splatter for a short time
567 JOIK woman talking 1444UT //594
603 HLSA quiet music, deep voiced man 1543UT //558
738 woman talking DU English intonation? 1511UT
1134 man and woman Japanese intonation;1451UT man talking 1537UT
sounded more Korean; both together at 1524UT

1143 female ballad 1531-2UT
1314 woman talking, Japanese intonation 1502UT
1332 man talking, Japanese intonation 1530UT
1503 JOUK woman on phone //594 1515UT
1557 man talking; Chinese? 1536UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

Colin reported some of the "big stuff" at sunrise, but there were
one or two other things heard here. Interestingly, 1400-1500UT has
generally been pretty poor, but this morning, at least the big guns
were doing pretty well then, and a couple of Koreans made an appearance.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

747 JOIB, the big NHK2 one today, maxing out with the music box at
1541UT, but had been pretty good earlier as well. This one doesn't
give its calls at s/off apparently, just "NHK, dai ni hoso"
972 HLCA man in Korean with another man agreeing, 1428UT; sunrise
enhancement (pop vocal at 1543UT) didn't quite get to this level.

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

774 JOUB man and woman in Japanese 1529UT; still quite good at s/off
1566 HLAZ pop music, 1532UT, erratic fading

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

558 HLQH soft vocal music //603 1418-20UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

603 HLSA soft music, //558 1418UT
828 JOBB pips 1400UT, vocal music //774 1408UT
1053 Korean jammer 1323UT
1242 man talking, Japanese inflection 1533UT
1386 NHK2 synchros man and woman in Japanese //774 1529UT
1593 CNR1 man in Chinese //6125 1531UT, usual pips not heard at 1530UT though

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

Grubbing in the dirt for minimal DX today; the boost at sunrise
wasn't too exciting, and as Bruce said, it fell off pretty quickly

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

1566 HLAZ choral mx, best on the N. Flag 1534UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

the above passing through

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

1314 JOUF blast of recognizable JJ by man 1529UT, very erratic
fading; mostly in the murk
1593 CNR1 down in the mire 1430UT, but faded up to woman in CC, CNR
nx sounder between items, then gone again, back fighting with splash
around 1530UT as well.

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

594 JOAK JJ inflected talk various times after 1440UT, pips at
1500UT, noted later //1503

1503 JOUK man talking 1532UT //similarly weak 594
1575 VoA? woman talking 1537UT, could be SE Asian, but??

Strongish het, no or near imaginary audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

Sort of a bit like others heard this morning, but I didn't get much
of a low band lift today. 774 was often in with audio from 1300UT
onwards, but it wasn't as good at sunrise as it had been
previously. I was also limited to the north Flag today, as the west
one was down to get it out of the way of tree pruners, and usually
the west Flag is best for low band Asiatic signals, even during enhancement.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

774 JOUB CC lessons 1347UT
1566 HLAZ man in CC 1524UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

1422 JORF assumed w/woman in JJ 1521UT, best this has been heard here
in a long time.

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

594 JOAK man in JJ 1301UT
1386 NHK2 man in JJ 1523UT, big carrier
1503 JOUK brief moment of jazz guitar at this strength 1523UT,
//1584sort of had to be reaching for NHK1 parallels this morning

1557 likely Taiwan woman in CC 1535UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music) :

828 JOBB opening bars of anthem 1540UT
972 HLCA? man talking, might have been KK 1401UT
1314 sounded like preaching 1527UT, DWXI likely?
1539 NHK2 man talking //1386 1523UT
1584 NHK1 jazz guitar //1503 various times 1523-1526UT
1593 CNR1? man talking, sounded like CC 1531UT

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

2013-01-29 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
I might have missed the best of the enhancement this morning, as
didn't get to the radio until after 1530UT to snag HLAZ fading away
with a lady in CC. Earlier tomorrow, but not too much earlier, as my
check at 1500UT showed minimal signals, and the overnight recorder
showed no reason to get out of bed.

best wishes,

Nick
