[IRCA] TP 17 Aug Victoria version.

2018-08-17 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Still splashy, with a mix of Asia and DU.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

no

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

612 4QR woman talking, DU English, 1242UT, no parallels just then

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

576 2RN woman talking DU English 1240UT; at 1242UT, weaker but //585

594 JOAK man talking Japanese 1227UT

828 JOBB English lessons 1246UT

1566 choral singing 1235UT, likely HLAZ

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

585 7RN man talking DU English? 1206UT; //576 1242UT

603 rhythmic island music 1149UT, likely Waatea?

702 woman and man talking DU English? 1216UT

738 man talking (sports announcer?), DU English intonation1138UT

747 JOIB sounded like English lessons //774 1224UT

774 JOUB man in Japanese 1152UT; at 1224UT, //747

972 man talking rapidly, another more slowly, Korean intonation? 1202UT

1017 woman talking, island dialect? 1153UT

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

 693 1287  seemed to be Asian;
 594 621 675 756 765 891 909 1098 1548 seemed to be DU

As Colin mentioned, DU on top of DU

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker,
at least briefly):

612 4QR man in DU English 1255UT //594 and others at various times

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

594 3WV man DU English 1245UT //702 , 612 774 etc
603 R. Waatea man in Maori presumably, then others reading short
items, 1304UT. News?
756 RNZ National man in DU English, then woman 1246UT, ID'd various
times, //567, 675

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

567 RNZ National man in DU English 1241UT, various times //675 756
675 RNZ National 6 short pips, last slightly elongated, time check
then woman with news 1300UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in
talk or music)

558 island vocal music 1246UT, likely Fiji
531 pop vocal 1148UT, man mumbling, DU English inflection 1152UT
558 island vocals 1153UT
576 2RN female vocal "America the Beautiful" oddly enough //621 1234UT
585 7RN man talking //576. 1244UT
621 3RN see 576 for details 1234UT
702 2BL various times //612 or 594 or?
774 3LO various times //612 or 594 or?
792 4RN suspected woman talking DU English inflection poking through
when 790 lost its carrier briefly. Was not //621 though

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter)

none  seemed to be Asian;
 657 738 909 1098 1296 1503 1566 1611 1629 seemed to be DU

>>>

As you both have noticed, 603-Waatea did seem to have a significantly improved
signal last week during the "Kiwi Cliff" DXpedition. It managed its best signal
ever at 1303 on 8-8 https://app.box.com/s/wruaavle3k3s4x9my9armbxl4od0369s and
also sounded pretty overwhelming on the first day (8-1) at 1256
https://app.box.com/s/s594rz5pctqf9hahfhpk7p1du2ajuzp0 I haven't heard anything
from Theo, but maybe it had some antenna or transmitter work done (without a
100% Japanese contribution, like 558-Fiji)?

Its Maori net parallel 765-Kahungunu was somewhat of an underperformer during
the trip, though. In previous years it sounded very much like a Kiwi big gun,
but on most days last week it sounded just like a 2.5 kW station.

Thanks Bill and Gary. These guys are DX at the coast, so to hear
them at home is definitely something to wake one up in the
morning. Unfortunately that wasn't a morning for live DXing, and
not sure that even if I'd been at the dials I would have been
fast-thinking enough to zero in on the appropriate webstreams before
they faded away again. Next time, if there is one, hi.

Life FM networks (posted at

shows that 684-Gisborne has been stricken from the Rhema network
list, and replaced by 684-Eastland. This must have been the
transmitter that you, Bill, Tom and I heard during DXpeditions this
summer. It also shows that 594-Timaru and 594-Wanganui have joined

Things mostly continued dead until some brief signs of like around
1230 and 1300UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it
understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

738 Tahiti assumed 1307UT, African pop? Certainly not island music
unless that has changed somewhat.
774 3LO man in DU English 1257UT, faded down towards hour but 6 pips,
ABC fanfare and ABC news by woman were quite identifiable

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or
noise could be understood by a native speaker:

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be
guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in

612 4QR? faded up 1229-31UT, woman talking, could have been DU English

Strongish het, no or near imaginary audio (either undermodulated or

2014-08-18 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Sorry for the delay, stayed up far too late listening to this (that's
a hint that it was good), so needed to send the actual report the
following morning.

So much for Asian/DU times being predictableyes Asians were there
the morning of the 17th, fighting with New Zealand, right from
1120UT. I'd say NZ was winning, at least on the power vs. distance
ratios, and just plain stamina. What a strange mix, and finishing
up with Aussies. I'm sure there were lots of unlogged
stations...just too much to keep track of.

Wow, that's a very impressive list of Kiwi DX for Victoria, Nick.

531 PI likely, man in island language, followed by choral island mx
1232UT. Had a cliffside volume to it.
http://www3.telus.net/public/shallpat/listen/531PI_20140817_1232.wav
Forgive the het; I was running wide synchronous detection, somewhere
in there are the 530 TIS's

Yes, I recognize the 531-PI Samoan male announcer's voice from last month's
DXpedition at Rockwork 4 (the station was the strongest overall DU during the 7
days at the Cliff).

702 Radio Live 1233UT woman talking thank you very much Grant
followed by Radio Live Sean Plunket by man (assisted by the online
archive). New for me.

702-Radio Live was also on a romp at the Oregon coast last month-- not only for
me, but for Chuck and Bill W. as well. It was a pretty rare catch before this
summer-- maybe an antenna improvement, or pattern change?

594 unID, piano mx 1126UT, given the weird mix, it might not have been
Japan...

In consideration of your vibrant reception of 531-PI and the other Kiwis, Nick,
you probably had the NZ Rhema network (5 kW and 2kW) in Timaru and Wanganui.
That Christian contemporary music network completely shut off the signals from
Aussie big gun 3WV last month at the Cliff.

Wonderful recordings Gary. I did hear the pips and the woman
mentioning the city council on 567, but way weaker and with more
splatter (I won't embarrass myself by providing a recording,
hi). 756 was better here this morning with some quite readable
moments, so I figured you'd be cleaning up if I was hearing NZ here.

Tons of signals, indeed :-) This morning was so wild with DU snarls
that I couldn't even type up a report until after listening to the
MP3's to try to sort out the snarls (531, 558, 567 and 738).
666-Noumea was matched the 738 // , and 1017-Tonga made a
halfhearted appearance. 558-Fiji may have been one of the DU's
mixing on 558, but it seems like the Kiwi 5 kW station was a bad
sport and ran them off.

Hi Nick,

It was an Asian invasion this morning at the Cape Perpetua ocean cliff--
something which seemed very bizarre after spending a week at the Kiwi-dominated
Rockwork 4 cliff last month. It wasn't until about 1315 that the DU's managed
to evict the Japanese big guns off of their frequencies (594, 693, 747, 774 and
828).
