[IRCA] TP 8 Jul Victoria version.

2018-07-09 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Mostly Asian this morning.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least
briefly):

JOUB came close

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a
native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise):

774 JOUB man in Japanese 1135-8UT, would have been very readable without the
770 splatter.

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could
be understood by a native speaker:

747 JOIB man in Japanese 1142UT, //774 at 1144UT, but weaker then

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

774 woman talking, DU English intonation 1225UT

972 man talking, possibly Korean? 1128UT

1566 slow male vocal 1125-27UT; likely HLAZ?

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged
by splatter)

594 828 891 1188 1197 1287 seemed to be Asian;
756 1017 1098 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick

Hi Walt,

Nick, and Gary, I'm planning on DXing in Masset as well during this time
frame (I'll be up there from July 19 to August 5, and if possible, DXing from
July 20th onward). So it should be a good time to //.

Glad to know that you'll be DXing in Masset during the Oregon cliff DXpeditions
this month, Walt! Derek also plans to be checking the band in California, and I
understand that the Yachats group plans to have three different antennas set up
(near sea level, at the Highway 101 turnoff, and on top of 805' Cape Perpetua).
Along with my own Ultralight DXpedition to the Rockwork cliff south of Cannon
Beach, the coordinated event may end up being a propagation science bonanza.

One comment on the cliffs being immune. To a certain degree, I can say
the same about Masset. There have been many times when absolutely zilch was
being heard in Victoria/WA, while I was having a great time hearing all sorts
of exotic DX, like India and Bangladesh.

Actually, Walt, your July 2011 DU-DXing results at Rose Spit provided the most
detailed high-band New Zealand logging information that I've ever seen. I keep
a copy of it on hand for reference during my Ultralight Cliffhanger
DXpeditions, but since I almost always run out of live DXing time before
investigating the high band Kiwis, there hasn't been any chance to chase them.

73, Gary

Very weak and sparse carriers again this morning. Hopefully
conditions will approve as the time for DXpeditions approaches

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by
cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) :

738 man talking 1136UT, too weak for language guess

Strongish het, no or near imaginaryaudio (either undermodulated or
ravaged by splatter):

best wishes,

Hi Nick,

Very weak and sparse carriers again this morning. Hopefully
conditions will improve as the time for DXpeditions approaches.

Actually, Nick, for some unknown reason both of the Oregon cliff sites chosen
for this month's DXpeditions seem to have a strange immunity to the DU
propagation slowdowns that occur frequently near sea level. Over the last 3
DXpeditions to Rockwork and Cape Perpetua I've enjoyed very good South Pacific
reception on 11 out of 11 days, although the favored areas of reception shift
back and forth between New Zealand and Australia.

I plan to monitor at home during the DXpeditions Gary, and I think Dennis wants
to also, so we will be able to see whether a better morning for us corresponds
to a better morning for you, or to reception from different areas. Science at
its finest

best wishes,

Nick
