Pete,

I have done that also in the 70s. I did not have dubbing machines then.
The old saying goes "If I knew then what I know now" sort of thing.

Dakar was 764 before the 1kHz move in 1978. I heard it in SF in the
early 60s. However, dummy didn't have dubbing equipment so I sent
them the original tape requesting a QSL and of course didn't hear back.

If I may be permitted to jog our memories...

Dakar was 764/5 and Sierra Leone was 1205/6.

>From San Diego (Rancho Bernardo to the North of the city and with very good
exposure to N and NE ) I had a few TA's in the mid/late 80's.

Best is my tape of Norway 1314 made around Thanksgiving 1986 with a gal
speaking after cl mx ended. Also audible when cx were best was some AA from
Morocco 1044 (they get inland well as I nab them here or in Grafton WI
sometimes) and Portugal 1035 was noted a few times with audible pop rock mx
and once the 1062 //.

I often had an open carrier pop on a few minutes prior to 0600z from 1404
Conakry but even at the Bev site around 1989 and aimed right at it, I
couldn't keep it in long enough for the sign on, in spite of a clear steady
S7 type OC.

Art,

Even though I did not join IRCA until 1968, I do remember TAs were more
common on the West Coast with only loops in the late 60s/early 70s. I
too have BBC on 647, 881, and 1214 from that era. Later on 882. Even
then the BBC did not QSL with FD cards, but I got them to give FD on the
MW frequencies. I also got France on 1205 too. As you said, the good ol'
days. Estonia 1034, I never logged.

Re: [IRCA] TPs and TAs on the West Coast

2007-03-01 Thread Arthur W Peterson
Larry Godwin and I both heard several TAs from the San Francisco area in
1965.
On 11/15/65 I logged and verified BBC-1214 and logged France-1205.
Then on 12/16/65 I logged and verified one of my most prized catches,
Tallinn, Estonia on 1034. The next day I logged East Germany-1043. Ah,
those were the days!
Since then, all these frequency allocations have been shifted up 1khz.

40 years later, I've had another nice run of TAs in 10/05 and 11/05,
mostly on long wave. That was a welcome bit of DX excitement.

Re: [IRCA] TPs and TAs on the West Coast

2007-03-01 Thread The Kaskey Family
Bill,

Oh my yes...Grant Manning! Neat guy, made good antennas...The only time in the
60s that I came close to hearing a TA was one evening when Clarence Freeman
from Auburn called me, alerting me to his reception of Dakar on 1206 (I think).
I tried but could hear no more than a weak carrier. I still was primarily a
domestic dxer then, but did love to hear Alaskans, Hawaiians, ZCO, 4QD, The
Zedder on 1000 and many JJs that I didn't much pay attention to as I ignorantly
didn't know about their time signals & IDs. I learned that 10 years later.
Midway Island on 920 was one of my better catches now that I think about it.
Conditions were pretty nice then!

I DXed from the Bay Area (Cupertino) from mid-1966 thru mid-1968. This
type of catch sure wasn't happening when I was there!

Re: [IRCA] TPs and TAs on the West Coast

2007-03-01 Thread Patrick Martin
Mike,

I am hoping two cycles repeat themselves in the future. One, is the the
fantastic night after night of solid DUs up and down the dial in the
early 80s I had here. Two and three DUs on many frequencies. In the
period of a few years I picked up over 200 Aussies & over 100 NZers plus
most of the Pacific heard & QSL'd. After 1985, that pretty much
disappeared. Today, DUs are maybe 10% of what they once were. The
second is the unbelievable conditions from 1992-1995, when I heard and
QSL'd Nepal, India, Tibet, and Bangladesh. That was much more short
lived, but it was great while it lasted. Conditions do run in cycles.
However, quite often sometimes those conditions never repeat themselves
to the point where there once were. In both cases, the DUs and the
Subcontiental Asians have never returned. Sure, I have had decent DU
openings since those days, and on a rare occasion, and India on 1566,
but nothing like before. I think it comes down to being at the dials at
the right time. As far a TAs go, at least here the fantastic opening I
got back in the early 80s was much better than anything I have had in
recent years. I was driving to the store in the early 80s when I had
Algeria 891 armchair copy on the car radio! I came home and pulled a
bunch of Germans, France, UK, etc, easy as pie. The opening was weak
here last Fall compared to the early 80s.

73,

Patrick

[IRCA] TPs and TAs on the West Coast

2007-03-01 Thread Mike Hardester
Since I no longer trust the ol' brain housing group for memory, I'll
toss this out to the West Coast DXers from the 60s/70s. There was a
group of DXers in the San Jose Bay area who were reporting exceptional
DX, including TAs (BBC-1215) and TPs. The year was before 1972 when I
joined the Navy. Perhaps past DXM issues of that era might identify them
and their catches.

Point. A lot of interesting TPs and some TAs are being noted by WCNA
DXers. Always one to believe in DX and solar cycles, is there a
possibility that this is a cycle that returns less frequently that
expected 11 year cycle?

Again, I'm not certain, but I think the activity reported lasted for
longer than a year. Of note also, the San Jose region has a higher level
of ground conductivity than many other areas of the United States
(http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/m3/index.html). This is a topic that has
been discussed here and/or the NRC site.

Just a thought.
