60 miles? You should see the enormous distance that 10 or 12 miles (between
Orcas Is and us) makes at times. You'd think we're on different planets!

[IRCA] TPs this morning

2007-09-11 Thread Bruce Portzer
This morning, I recorded 1405-1595 on the SDR-IQ from 1100-1330 UT, and
again spot-checked the files for TP DX

1566 HLAZ was up and down but often good, especially 1230-1315

1575 Thailand fair carrier with decent audio for a couple of minutes
around 1250

1413 and 1422 carriers visible around 1305, with 1422 producing a het.

Just for the heck of it, I listened to 440 for JOWF at 1250-1305, but
only heard KMED and the Alberta station

Bruce, I heard JOWF at 13:09 this morning. I remember hearing it frequently
last year, and on the Charlottes, it totally dominates that channelWalt.

Last time I heard JOWF was in 1978... on 1440...
on a DX150B with a 300 foot Inverted L terminated at 75 feet above ground.

I looked this morning -- nothing.

Bruce,

I've heard JOWF at least three times in the past week or so from here
on Orcas... and also, Walt and I compare things each morning
you'd think that we would be very very similar, but often we are
not. I'd imagine that your inland location pretty much dampens the
JJ and CC signals coming down the Gulf of Georgia... I know that the
Olympic Mountains and possibly the rest of the San Juans that are
between me and Australia (but that the Victoria guys at least
partially clear) sure makes it more difficult for me to hear
Australia from here on Orcas.

Audio on 1566, unneeded South Korea.

I also heard weak audio on 774 after this.

It was dark at 6 AM and by 6:10 it was getting light and the signals were
fading except 774 was still in at 6:15. I even tried on my Collins 51J and I
could hear them. After 6:15 the IBOC stations wipe out most of the 700's.

594 is new for me but not enough details for a report. I'll try tomorrow.

It looks like you get good TP reception there in AZ.

[IRCA] TPs this morning from Queen Charlotte Is etc.

2007-02-16 Thread WALTER SALMANIW
Hi, fellas. From a wet and wild Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands). Storm
force south-easterlies today, so there's horizontal rain tonight. I'm at a
cousin of Wanda's (my spouse) and just enjoyed a very nice deer roast. Yummm!

I checked my list of Alaskans still to hear. Some are understandable, such as
Barrow on 680, but others I don't understand such as some relatively high power
Fairbanks stations and Anchorage. It's pretty amazing how strong coastal
stations from the lower 48 and BC/Alberta can be here. They're pretty pesky
for the most part. I'm surprised how powerful 900 Victoria is all day and
night here. 1070 isn't audible during the day, but well heard during darkness
hours. As far as 680 is concerned, if it's not KNBR (which is there all day
and night here), it's the Alberta French language station. Otherwise nothing
else, so far. Conditions these past few nights have not favoured Alaska,
unfortunately. That first night or two...forget now whether that was Saturday,
Sunday or Monday night, the Alaskans were faboulous. I just started at the
bottom of the band and worked up, logging most of them. Finally stopped around
the middle of the band at 03:30 local. I was able to mp
3 all the local ids of these stations.

As for TP this morning, wow! I'm sure it was much better than yesterday
morning. TAs were dead last night, but this morning, after IDing a couple more
Alaskans, I switched over to TP to find 1575 just booming in with AFN Japan
programmingthis went on hour after hour. I finally got an ID from them
(actually 2) as You are listening to the American Forces Network, or such and
this was repeated from another site a second or two latter. I couldn't believe
the strength (up to S9) and how long it lasted (upto around 18:00 UTC).
Koreans dominated this morning. At 17:30 there were still numerous audios
available. Especially on the upper half of the band. A quick check revealed
lots of Korean stations here...MBC, KBS 1, etc. HLAZ was very strong signing
off in Russian at 17:30. Weaker when they came back for an hour at 18:00. Not
to bad at all! I was so mesmorized by AFN that I didn't check anything else
for the most part this morning. I did here an Australian, th
ough at the top end of the band, but not as well as yesterday.

Only a couple more mornings to have fun before heading home to Victoria. Hope
everyone is well and having as much fun as I am. My plan is to post as many of
the Alaskan IDs as possible, probably at www.dxer.ca website. Thanks, Colin!

Mike, a couple of nights ago, Whitehorse was booming into my
 location on
the Charlottes. After the news they gave local Yukon weather,
 etc. Never
did hear a specific local ID. Time was same as in the Pacific
 time zone.
  .Walt.

Thanks Walt. When I heard that I had the recorder set to run for 5
 mins
before TOH to 15 after with the hope of hearing the local news. I
 had
previously checked the CBC North website and found their schedule
 which gave
local news at TOH +12. Of course Murphy stepped in and said no
 way, so I
never heard anything after the start of the CBC news. Still, the
 local news
headlines and weather was enough to confirm I did in fact have
 Whitehorse.
Now I'm back after the Alaskan on 1110.
