[IRCA] WHYL-960 DX Test heard in Vermont
WHYL-960 heard very weakly at 0009 EDT and again at 0020 EDT with Morse code IDs at two different pitches and sweep tones, barely audible under extremely strong WEAV-960, in Plattsburgh, NY, just a few miles line-of-sight across Lake Champlain from my QTH in Saint Albans, VT. Another station was also heard very weakly earlier at the top of the hour with news that may have been WFIR-960. I'm frankly rather stunned I was able to hear anything besides WEAV, considering most of WHYL's signal goes E-W. Sony ICF-2010 and Radio West loop. Thanks to Bruce Collier and anyone else involved in organizing and running this test! You can bet I'll be sending in a reception report for this one. [IRCA] WHYL-960 DX test
Heard with multi-pitch code IDs, sweep tones, voice IDs and 70's oldies. WERC Birmingham was usually atop, but WHYL was sometimes over them during sweep tone periods. I happily listened for the whole two hours. Bruce, thanks so much for your time and effort in running this test! It was my longest dry spell with DX tests since entering the hobby, and it felt really good to hear one again! [IRCA] WHYL-960 DX Test
I monitored 960, but didn't hear the WHYL DX Test. IBOC QRM from local KRWZ-950 is tough enough to get by, but then there's CFAC which is a powerhouse pest. If CFAC were off (or not using non-directional pattern) WHYL would have stood a chance. The other stations heard here tonight on 960 were KMA and KFLN. No sign of RR Cuba. Sorry you did not hear the test. Down here in Tennessee, which is much closer, I had them booming in at S9+20db for the first 30 minutes or so, then it went down hill after that. By 0200 I could'n hear the station at all. By 0130 there was lots of QRM from WERC in Birmingham, AL. [IRCA] WHYL-960 DX Test barely heard in Memphis, TN
Dominant on 960 kHz was WABG in Greenwood, MS and WERC in Birmingham, AL. Also Radio Reloj in the mix. Skimming through the recording this morning, I have definite sweep tones starting at 01:01.15 EDT. I need to go through the recording later and see if I can hear any code. Surprised even this was even heard as WHYL's bearing from here is approx. 59°, so pretty much in the side null of my ALA100 Loop bearing 150°/330°. [IRCA] WHYL-960 DX Test not heard in AB
The WHYL DX test wasn't heard here in southern Alberta either. Not a real surprise, as eastern conditions didn't seem that good. Interesting to note that others heard CFAC so well, as here, about 120 miles from them, they were generally being overpowered by the country music from KSRA in Salmon, ID. I'd thought it was the more common KFLN until I heard the ID.
