Re: [IRCA] Wolfman Jack -(one more and last time) UK!
I started DX 1963/4 and heard this guy rocking the waves on 10-10 wins which some times puts a decent signal in to the UK. 10-10 WINS 1510 WMEX were the first NA stations I QSLed. Soon after we got some similar music/presentation on pop pirates like Radio London and Radio Caroline. I recall in those days you got dozens of IDs rather than the current 10 second slot at the TOH. Stations like WINS hooked me on the medium wave (AM) DX scene for 40 odd years! Best wishes Barry :-) From: John Sampson jnsamp...@earthlink.net To: Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America irca@hard-core-dx.com Sent: Friday, 20 May 2011, 2:30 Subject: Re: [IRCA] Wolfman Jack -(one more and last time) One other note; I think Wolfman was somehow involved with KUXL (1570) in Golden Valley, Minnesota, during its early years (the station came on the in late 1961). Re: [IRCA] Wolfman Jack -(one more and last time)
Thanks to all for the Wolfman Jack (Bob Smith) update. Anyway,I always thought he was a Mexican or Spanish American since he kind of looked like a Latino and since he worked at a Mexican station but then with a name like Bob Smith maybe not. Also I remember reading that he might have been heard on a Mex station across from a Texas border city,El Paso maybe?, which was pumping out 150 KW. True or not, my memory is kind of vague about this. But anyway, not really important. Re: [IRCA] Wolfman Jack -(one more and last time)
For years he aired via XERF-1570, just across the river from Del Rio, TX. Although licensed for and listed at a high power, my understanding was that the electricity requirements were such that the transmitter never operated at it's maximum listed power. I used to hear him regularly from Northern NJ in the 1960's. Re: [IRCA] Wolfman Jack -(one more and last time)
I don't recall this being mentioned in this thread, but if it has, please forgive me for repeating it. Wolfman Jack, AKA Bob Smith, and his wife had an easy-listening music program on one of the Shreveport, LA, stations back in the late 1950's. I think the station was either KRMD-1340 or KCIJ-1480. George Carlin started in radio in Shreveport, too, while he was stationed at Barksdale AFB across the Red River in Bossier City, LA. 73 Good DX'ing, Steve N5WBI Born in the Ark-La-Tex -- Sent from my iPhone ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] Wolfman Jack -(one more and last time)
XERF must have been using somewhere in the 250KW range at one time as they were a nightly powerhouse into the NW for years at 2,000 miles. They are 100KW now and is heard, but nothing like they used to be. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin Seaside OR KGED QSL Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
Re: [IRCA] Wolfman Jack -(one more and last time)
It's all relative. There is far more interference from locals, adjacent channels and co-channels than there ever was then. I would guess that XERF might have gotten around 100kw back in the day, and is probably getting less than that now.
