Re: [IRCA] 1260 - San Franciso - Format Change

2007-12-10 Thread Mike McKenna
I beleive that the first - tall self-supported tower for KYA - 1260 -- had a
bad tower foundation and a single guyed tower was built to replace the old
tower -- just a few feet away.

Of those stations you mention Pat, only KSTN-1420-Stockton stills plays the
same (or nearly the same) format as the 70s. We were young in those days thats
why they seem so good. Youth is
wonderful!

Russ 'The Moose' Syracuse. Big name in the Bay Area in those days. As were
Jack Carney, John Gilliland and all the others Mike mentioned. Sherwood used
to make Aaron Edwards days longer and longer :-). Lots of great jocks but my
memory doesn't retain as much these days.

Don't forget Russ the Moose and the all-night flight! They had a news guy
whose name was on the tip of my tongue until I tried to force it out my
fingers.anyway, I went to high school with his kid. I listened to them
back when Tom Donohue and Tommy Saunders were on. Donohue moved on to FM, and
I think that was the beginning of the downhill slide for AM. He started album
rock on KMPX, then was part of the strike when owners tried to squeeze the
on-air staff too hard for their liking. They bought a failing classical
station from Metromedia with the calls KSAN. They may have been dead & buried
in some ways, but I think they live on forever in much the same way as the
Drake format on AM.

Back about that same time was the heyday for Don Sherwood, Al "Jazzbeaux"
Collins, Ira Blue, etc. Obviously my perspective has to be skewed towards Bay
Area radio because that's where I was, but the impact of Tom Donohue on music
formats, Ira Blue on talk, and Don Sherwood on humor and liveliness changed
radio a lot.

Certainly agree with you Mike on Media Power. Rupert Murdoch scares heck out
of me. As to the KYA tower. I have a KYA QSL from reception in Iowa back in
1950. It's a postcard with a full picture of the tower. Also attended many a
baseball game at Candlestick Park while the tower was still there.
Forget the reason it came down. Maybe after KYA was sold?

Re: [IRCA] 1260 - San Franciso - Format Change

2007-12-09 Thread Donald K. Kaskey
Ah Yes Larry, KYA..

I remember listening their last night. They had a big party & there was some
connection with KSFO. Believe KYA-FM & KSFO were connected somehow. Seems to
me KSFO had a party as well but my
memory tricks me at times these days. I DO remember that when KYA left at
midnight there was about a 3 minute period of dead air and then out of nowhere
with no announcements or anything KOIT
came on // their main station KOIT-FM. No announcements, right in the middle
of a son. For the next 20 years it remained that way. The AM a poor cousin to
the FM station. Altho KOIT (both FM
& AM) are mocked by many of the 20-45 year olds of the area they still remained
one of the most listened to stations. Their FM will continue with its light
rock programming, which has now been
moved up another notch to 80s-90s light rock.

Thanks Mike..Been wondering when the changeover was going to happen. Might
make 1260 a bit easier to null. I've received 4 or 5 stations under/thru KOIT

90% music.
